Identify a Song from Audio: How Music Matching Works

Music identification services turn captured audio into an acoustic fingerprint and compare it with catalog recordings to identify a song.

A music identification service listens to a short recording or live audio, turns it into a compact acoustic fingerprint, and checks that fingerprint against a catalog of known recordings. If it finds a sufficiently close match, it can return details such as the song title and artist—without requiring you to know either in advance.

What is a music identification service?

It is software that identifies recorded music from captured sound. A phone app can listen to music playing nearby; a developer can also build recognition into an app or service through a framework or API. In either case, the basic task is to match audio against reference recordings rather than search for words typed by the listener.

A successful match may provide the track title, artist, and album. Depending on the service, results can also include links to listening platforms or identifiers used to catalog recordings. ACRCloud, for example, says its service can match music to platforms including Spotify, Deezer, and YouTube, and return identifiers such as ISRC and UPC. These are capabilities claimed by that provider, not universal features of every service. ACRCloud Music Recognition

How does an app identify a song from a few seconds of audio?

It captures a sample and creates a fingerprint

The service analyzes the sound and creates a compact acoustic signature, often called a fingerprint. ShazamKit describes its signature as capturing how audio energy is distributed across time and frequency. The signature is much smaller than the original recording and cannot be converted back into that recording. Apple ShazamKit documentation

It searches for a matching reference

The service compares the captured signature with reference signatures associated with recordings in its catalog. A match is found when the query signature sufficiently corresponds to a segment of a reference recording. One documented fingerprinting approach analyzes a spectrogram, selects distinctive time-frequency landmarks, and encodes them as hashes linked to a track and positions within it. It then looks for hashes whose timing aligns. This illustrates one approach; it does not mean every provider uses the same algorithm. ACRCloud’s explanation of audio fingerprinting

What can affect whether recognition succeeds?

Recognition depends on both the catalog and the audio sample. The service needs a suitable reference recording, and the captured sound must preserve enough distinctive information for comparison. Background noise does not automatically prevent a match: Apple says Shazam can recognize noisy background music, but does not promise a result for every recording or listening environment. Apple Support: Use Shazam to identify songs

Some services can handle a request that was captured without an internet connection. Apple says Shazam can save an offline request and identify it after the device reconnects. This behavior is specific to Shazam; it should not be assumed for every recognition app. Apple Support: Use Shazam to identify songs

How is the technology used beyond consumer apps?

Recognition technology is also available to developers. Apple’s ShazamKit lets an app search either the Shazam catalog or a developer’s own custom catalog, then use match metadata in its experience. Apple ShazamKit documentation

Developers can also use identification APIs. ACRCloud documents an API and recommends sending a fingerprint, which it says can reduce bandwidth and speed up recognition. Its product page says its reference database contains over 150 million tracks and is constantly updated; that is ACRCloud’s own current product claim, not an independently verified count for the wider industry. What happens to the audio, and what about privacy?

Privacy handling varies by provider, so the relevant service’s current privacy notice is the place to check. Apple says Shazam Music Recognition sends a unique audio fingerprint and IP address to Apple to process the request and detect fraud or misuse. By default, requests use a random identifier generated by the device that is not linked to an Apple Account. These details describe Apple’s service, not all music identification services.
