PostgreSQL Migration Tests on Unikraft Cloud: What Volume Cloning Can—and Can’t—Guarantee

Unikraft Cloud documents independent, asynchronous volume copies, but not transactional consistency for a live PostgreSQL database. Learn how to prepare and validate a separate migration test environment.

Unikraft Cloud volume cloning can provide a separate copy of PostgreSQL’s stored data for a migration rehearsal, but the available platform documentation does not establish that cloning a volume attached to a running database produces a transactionally consistent snapshot. Before copying production data, confirm Unikraft’s current source-state requirements; after copying, verify that PostgreSQL starts and the expected data is present before testing.

What volume cloning does—and what it does not prove

Unikraft Cloud documents a volume clone as an independent copy. Creating one is asynchronous: the new volume first appears in a pending state while its data is copied in the background. That makes cloning a possible way to provision separate storage for a test environment, not proof that the copy represents a consistent PostgreSQL point in time. Unikraft’s volume documentation and its PostgreSQL deployment guide do not specify whether a live database volume is copied transactionally, what shutdown or checkpoint procedure may be required, or whether crash recovery is guaranteed for a clone.

Do not treat a completed storage copy as a validated database backup or a safe live snapshot. Confirm the current platform requirements for the source volume and database state before copying production data. Then start the copied database and check its contents before relying on migration results.

Prepare PostgreSQL data on a persistent volume

Unikraft’s PostgreSQL example stores the database files on a mounted persistent volume. Its configuration mounts the volume at /volume and sets PGDATA=/volume/postgres. Unikraft says persistent volumes preserve data across restarts and redeployments. The PostgreSQL guide also shows a POSTGRES_PASSWORD environment variable; handle credentials according to your deployment’s security practices rather than copying an example secret into production unchanged.

Use the documented mount and data-directory pattern as a starting point, then check the current PostgreSQL image and deployment configuration you actually run. The guide’s behavior is specific to its example and should not be assumed for every image or deployment.

Choose the right copy operation

Unikraft documents volume cloning and creating a volume from a template as distinct operations. A template is an immutable volume state: it cannot be written to or deleted while active clones exist, and the guide says a template itself cannot be cloned. Separately, the CLI reference documents creating a volume from an existing template with kraft cloud volume create --from existing-template --name my-volume. Review the volume lifecycle rules and the CLI reference to determine which operation fits your source and its current state; neither route is documented here as providing stronger PostgreSQL consistency.

Approach What the documentation establishes What to check
Clone a volume Creates an independent copy; copying completes asynchronously and the new volume begins in pending state. Source eligibility and PostgreSQL consistency requirements are not established in the reviewed pages. Volume documentation Confirm the source is eligible and in a supported state, and ask Unikraft whether PostgreSQL must be stopped or otherwise quiesced.
Create a volume from a template The CLI reference documents kraft cloud volume create --from existing-template --name my-volume. The volume guide describes template immutability and lifecycle restrictions. CLI reference; Volume documentation Confirm how to create or use the template for your case, ensure no active-clone restriction blocks the intended lifecycle, and verify the resulting volume before use.

Rehearse the migration in a separate environment

  1. Keep PostgreSQL data on a persistent volume. Configure the mount and PGDATA pattern described in Unikraft’s PostgreSQL guide.
  2. Confirm source-state and consistency requirements. Before copying production data, check the current volume documentation and obtain platform guidance on whether the source database must be stopped or quiesced. The reviewed pages do not certify live-database consistency.
  3. Create the appropriate copy. Use the documented volume-clone operation or, where applicable, create a volume from a template using the --from CLI option. Wait until the asynchronous copy has completed; do not try to use a volume that is still pending.
  4. Attach the copy to a separate test PostgreSQL instance. Keep the original volume and production instance separate. Check current attachment behavior before planning the cutover or rehearsal: Unikraft’s guide says attaching a volume to a running instance is scheduled to take effect at its next scale-to-zero cycle, while detaching requires the instance to be fully shut down.
  5. Validate, then run the rehearsal. Start PostgreSQL on the copied data, verify that it starts and that expected databases and records are present, and investigate any startup or recovery issues before running the migration. Record the migration’s results and inspect the resulting schema and data. These are prudent validation steps, not an end-to-end procedure demonstrated by Unikraft’s guide.
  6. Manage the test resources deliberately. Retain or discard the test volume and instance according to your team’s data-handling and cleanup policies. Do not remove a template while active clones remain.

Prevent storage settings from undermining the test

Unikraft describes ext4 block volumes as the default and rwo (read-write once) as the default access mode. It also lists rox (read-only many) and rwx (read-write many); rwx is available only with virtiofs, which the guide says is slower than block volumes. These options do not make it appropriate to mount one writable PostgreSQL data directory concurrently in multiple database instances. Use a separate copied volume for the test database, not a shared read-write mount. Check the current volume documentation for the configuration and lifecycle behavior that applies to your deployment.

Account for PostgreSQL scale-to-zero behavior

Unikraft’s PostgreSQL example warns that its default scale-to-zero policy can scale an instance down even when idle psql connections exist. It describes support in that example for suspending scale-to-zero while queries run. Treat this as example-specific guidance, not a guarantee for every PostgreSQL image or deployment; check the configuration of the instance used for your rehearsal in the PostgreSQL guide.

When a clone is not enough

If you cannot establish whether the source volume is safe to copy in its current state, do not assume that a successful clone is transactionally consistent. Follow current guidance from Unikraft and your database operations team for preparing the source, and validate the resulting PostgreSQL instance before using it to judge a risky migration. Volume cloning can separate test storage from production storage; the reviewed documentation does not settle the database-consistency question that determines whether a particular copy is fit for a migration rehearsal.
