Most stores do not need a complete register bundle to start. A mobile seller may need only a supported phone or tablet and a way to accept payments; a fixed retail counter may add a receipt printer, barcode scanner, and cash drawer when those tools fit its checkout workflow. Choose hardware after selecting your POS software, then confirm every device and connection is supported.
Choose hardware around the way you sell
There is no universal POS hardware bundle. Shopify’s guide to POS hardware treats equipment as dependent on the business: the essentials are the device that runs the POS and a way to take the payment types you offer. Other peripherals solve particular needs, such as printing receipts, scanning barcodes, or handling cash.

Mobile seller or pop-up
Start with a POS-supported smartphone or tablet and payment capability. Depending on the provider, that may mean a compatible card reader or an eligible phone using Tap to Pay. Check that the device, payment method, and service are available in your country before relying on them at a sales event.
Permanent retail counter
A counter setup commonly adds a receipt printer for customers who want paper receipts. Add a barcode scanner if staff use product barcodes to find items in the POS, and a cash drawer if the store accepts cash. A stand can make a tablet easier to use at a fixed register, but it is not a checkout requirement in every setup.

Multiple stores or a warehouse
For multiple locations, plan around a supported POS device and payment reader at each checkout, then add printers, scanners, and drawers where the local workflow needs them. Shopify’s example for multi-store or warehouse retail includes all of these, but it is a planning baseline—not a requirement that every site buy every item. Verify compatibility and network connections at each location.
Restaurant or food service
Restaurant hardware follows order flow as much as payment flow. A setup may use tablets or handhelds for orders, a customer-facing kiosk, kitchen display devices, or printers that route tickets to preparation areas. Depending on the operation, it may also use scales, cash drawers, pole displays, or scanners. Toast describes Android devices serving as order terminals, kiosks, handhelds, kitchen displays, or payment terminals; select equipment to match the front-of-house, kitchen, and payment workflow.

What each POS component does
| Component | What it does | When it is useful |
|---|---|---|
| POS device or terminal | Runs the POS interface; it may be a phone, tablet, dedicated terminal, handheld, or touchscreen device, depending on the provider. | Every setup needs a supported device to run its POS software. |
| Payment reader or terminal | Accepts the payment methods supported by the reader and provider. | Use one when required for the payment methods you accept; verify model and regional support. |
| Receipt printer | Prints paper customer receipts. | Add one if customers need or prefer printed receipts. |
| Kitchen printer or kitchen display system | Sends or displays orders for preparation. | Useful for restaurant workflows that need tickets or a screen in the kitchen. |
| Barcode scanner | Reads product barcodes so the POS can retrieve the corresponding item. | Useful when staff scan barcoded inventory instead of searching the item library. |
| Cash drawer | Holds cash and supports cash transactions. | Add one if you accept cash; its connection may depend on a compatible receipt printer. |
| Stand, scales, and other peripherals | Support a particular counter layout, weighing task, or service workflow. | Buy only when the arrangement or products require them. |
For example, Shopify says its POS Hub cash drawers connect through a compatible receipt printer rather than directly to the Hub. Square likewise documents drawers that connect through compatible printers, with some able to open automatically. These examples show why a peripheral’s connection path matters as much as its basic function.

A device that works with one POS platform—or one connection method—may not work with another. Check the software provider’s live compatibility documentation for the exact model and configuration you plan to buy.

- 2x Paper Rolls
- Clover Station Hub (H500)
- Black Ethernet Cable
- Power Cord
- Terminal to Display Cable (5ft/1.5m)
- Choose the POS platform and host device. Confirm that your intended phone, tablet, terminal, or operating system meets the provider’s device requirements.
- Match the exact peripheral model. Check the supported-hardware list, not just the manufacturer or product category. Shopify’s POS Hub documentation, for example, names specific Star Micronics and Epson printers, Zebra scanners, and cash drawers. Those models are examples for that documented setup, not proof of compatibility with every POS system.
- Confirm the connection type. Identify whether each item connects by USB through a supported hub, Bluetooth, or the store network. Shopify’s POS Hub offers USB connectivity as an alternative to Bluetooth. Its documentation says LAN-capable printers and other Ethernet devices connect to the router, not to the Hub’s Ethernet port as peripherals.
- Check the cash-drawer path. Verify whether the drawer connects to supported POS hardware or to a compatible receipt printer, and confirm the required cable and opening method.
- Verify payments and availability. Confirm that the reader supports your payment types and is offered for your country. Payment-provider and payment-method availability can vary by region.
- Set up the network first. Shopify Help Center advises, “Before you connect any hardware, set up your network for Shopify POS.” Network misconfiguration can disrupt payment processing, device connectivity, and data syncing.
- Use the provider’s setup flow and test. Check that the POS detects peripherals, configure payments, and run a payment test before opening. Toast’s setup overview includes network checks, peripheral detection, payment configuration, and a payment test.
- Plan for checkout continuity if needed. If downtime would be disruptive, consider a spare reader and pair it before launch; Shopify recommends this approach.
Examples of hardware on a supported list
These are examples named in Shopify’s POS Hub compatibility documentation. Confirm the exact model, connection, region, and compatibility with your chosen POS setup before purchase.
- Receipt printers: Star Micronics mC-Print3 and Epson TM-m30III.
- Barcode scanners: Zebra DS2208 USB and Zebra DS2278 2D scanner.
- Cash drawer: Star Micronics SMD2, which Shopify says connects to the Hub through a compatible receipt printer.
These listings establish compatibility for the documented Shopify POS Hub setup only; they do not establish compatibility with another platform, current stock, or price.

Use a buying checklist, not a bundle list
- What supported phone, tablet, terminal, or operating system will run the POS?
- Which payment types do you accept, and what reader does the provider require?
- Do you need customer receipts, kitchen tickets, barcode scanning, cash handling, weighing, or mobile checkout?
- How will each component connect, and does the network support the intended setup?
- Is every exact model supported in your country and at each location?
- Does the setup need to be fixed at a counter, handheld, kiosk-based, or available at multiple registers?
Compatibility lists, operating-system requirements, supported connections, and product availability can change. Check the provider’s current documentation immediately before ordering. The available vendor guidance does not establish a reliable cross-brand total-cost or performance comparison, so compare current local prices separately rather than assuming a larger bundle is better.
