What is known about the VLC startup delay?
In August 2026, Tom’s Hardware reported that VLC developers attributed some long startup or playback delays to Microsoft Defender interfering with VLC’s plugin cache. The report described a possible maximum delay of 33 seconds, not a typical result or a measure of how many users are affected. Tom’s Hardware said its own Windows 11 test did not reproduce the delay. How to troubleshoot VLC opening slowly
1. Pin down when the delay happens
Check whether VLC is slow when opened by itself, when launched by opening a media file, or only on its first launch after Windows starts. Note whether the delay is consistent. These observations can help narrow the troubleshooting, but none by itself shows that Defender is responsible.

2. Try regenerating VLC’s plugin cache
Tom’s Hardware reports that regenerating the plugin cache or reinstalling VLC may resolve the delay. The report identifies vlc-cache-gen.exe and a Start menu reset shortcut as possible reset routes. A cache reset may remove customized VLC preferences, including audio settings, keyboard shortcuts, and subtitle settings. If those matter, record or back up your preferences before using a reset route. The report does not establish that either workaround is permanent across updates.
3. Check whether Defender contributes
Microsoft recommends using the Defender Antivirus performance analyzer to identify paths and processes involved in slow-application investigations. Its guidance also describes testing whether real-time protection contributes to the performance problem, then restoring protection and assessing a suitable exclusion if testing shows a benefit. Follow Microsoft’s performance troubleshooting guidance for the analyzer and test procedure.
Treat any temporary change to real-time protection as a diagnostic test, not a routine fix: restore protection after the test and assess the results before changing exclusions. The available Microsoft guidance is general troubleshooting advice; it does not confirm Defender as the cause of a particular VLC delay.
4. Consider an exclusion only if testing supports it
Microsoft says exclusions can apply to a file, folder, file type, or process. Excluded content may no longer be checked for threats, so an exclusion trades some protection for performance. A process exclusion can have broader consequences for files opened by that process; Microsoft advises using full paths to reduce ambiguity. 5. Retest after updates
Because the affected versions and incident status have not been established in the official sources reviewed, do not assume an old exclusion is still needed after a VLC or Defender update. Retest VLC’s startup and remove any exclusion that is no longer justified.
