Choose a portable power station by estimating the energy your devices need, checking that its inverter can handle their combined running power and startup surges, and confirming how you will recharge it. Watt-hours (Wh) describe stored energy; watts (W) describe power available at a moment. Neither advertised capacity nor a runtime estimate guarantees the energy an appliance will receive.
Capacity and output answer different questions
Capacity, measured in watt-hours, helps estimate runtime. Output, measured in watts, tells you how much power the station can supply at once. A large battery cannot run a device if the inverter’s output is too low, and a powerful inverter does not mean the battery will last a long time.

For AC appliances, compare the total running watts of the devices you expect to use simultaneously with the station’s continuous AC output. Then check startup requirements separately: refrigerators, pumps, and other motors or compressors may briefly draw more power when they start. Compare that surge with both the appliance requirement and the station’s surge rating. Do not assume a high surge rating means the station can sustain that power continuously.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteEstimate the energy you need
Calculate each load
List each device, its typical power draw, and how long it needs to run. Use labels and manuals as a starting point. For compatible plug-in appliances, a plug-in watt meter can help measure real consumption; it does not establish a motor’s startup surge.

Multiply watts by hours for each load, then add the results. For example, a 100 W average load running for eight hours uses 800 Wh before losses. That is planning arithmetic, not a promise of eight hours from an 800 Wh station.
Allow for the energy you cannot use
Rated battery capacity is not the same as usable AC energy. Inverter conversion losses, battery reserve, the station’s own consumption, temperature, battery aging, and changes in appliance use all affect delivered energy and runtime. Leave a margin rather than sizing exactly to the arithmetic.

As an illustration, PowerOutlast calculates 2,000 Wh × 0.85 ÷ 200 W as about 8.5 hours. The 85% is an assumed efficiency for that example, not a universal or independently established efficiency rating for power stations. Actual runtime depends on the station, load, and conditions.

| Battery and expansion | Battery chemistry, manufacturer cycle-life documentation, compatible expansion batteries, and whether adding one changes capacity only or also output. |
| Moving and storing it | Weight, handles or wheels, and whether you can transport and store it where you intend to use it. |
| Ownership and installation | Warranty, service information, safety documentation, and any transfer equipment or electrical work needed for home integration. |
| Full system cost | The station plus any panels, cables, adapters, expansion batteries, transfer equipment, and qualified electrical work required for your setup. |
As rough use-case examples, Anker SOLIX’s UK buying guide places phone and laptop charging below 600 Wh and at 300–600 W output; weekend camping at 600–1,500 Wh and 600–1,200 W; short home power cuts at 1,000–2,000 Wh and 1,000–1,800 W; and multi-day appliance backup at 2,000 Wh or more and 2,000 W or more. These are manufacturer guide recommendations, not universal sizing rules or independently tested results. Your load list and runtime target should determine the size you need.
Plan how you will recharge it
Check the exact model’s supported charging methods and maximum input. A station may accept wall, solar, or vehicle charging, but availability, speed, and compatibility vary by model. Standard 12 V vehicle charging can be slow for a large battery.

Solar charging depends on panel output, weather, season, orientation, shade, and the station’s input limit. A panel’s rated wattage is not a guarantee of continuous power delivered to the station. Confirm panel and cable compatibility, and include any required equipment in the total cost. If you want to use the station while solar charging, verify that the specific model supports simultaneous charging and output; do not assume every station does.
Check battery safety and home integration
Look for model-specific safety documentation
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) describes battery and charger hazards including overheating, fire, electric shock, thermal burns, and other injuries, with incidents reported during use, storage, and charging. It recommends protections across the battery, charger, and finished product. CPSC staff state: “End-product systems (including cells, batteries, chargers, and product) are tested together for safe function and appropriate conditions.” The agency’s general guidance is not a certification of any particular power station.

- 𝟔 𝐖𝐚𝐲𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐞: Supports up to 400W solar input. Power up via AC + solar, a wall outlet, a generator, solar panels, an alternator charger, or a car outlet—anytime, anywhere.
When reviewing a specific model, check the manufacturer’s safety documentation and any certification claims rather than relying on a general reference to standards. CPSC lists UL 2054, for household and commercial batteries, and UL 2595, for general requirements for battery-powered appliances, among voluntary standards; its page does not establish which standard applies to a particular power station or prove that a unit is certified.
Do not connect a station to household wiring improperly
A portable station is not automatically a whole-home battery. Use only a product and configuration designed for household integration through compatible transfer equipment or a home power panel. Use a qualified electrician where required. Never backfeed a home’s wiring through a standard wall outlet.
Quick Recap
A practical buying sequence
- List the loads: Write down the devices you want to run, their typical watts, and the hours each must operate.
- Estimate energy: Multiply watts by hours for each load and add the totals. Use measured consumption for compatible plug-in appliances when available.
- Check simultaneous output: Add the running watts of devices that will operate at the same time and compare that sum with continuous output.
- Check startup surge: Identify motor or compressor startup needs and compare them with the station’s surge rating.
- Match ports and charging: Confirm outlet types, voltage, charging inputs, input limits, and accessory compatibility for the exact model.
- Account for real-world constraints: Leave energy margin, assess weight and storage, and verify expansion, safety, warranty, and service details.
- Price the complete setup: Add required panels, cables, adapters, expansion batteries, transfer equipment, and electrical work before comparing total cost.
