A portable hard drive is an external storage device designed to be carried and connected to a computer or another host, usually through USB. In the strict sense, a portable hard drive is a portable HDD: it stores data on spinning magnetic disks. A portable SSD is also an external portable drive, but it stores data on flash memory instead.
What “portable” means
“Portable” describes a drive’s form and intended use: it is made to travel with you and connect to a host device when needed. Many portable HDDs draw power through their USB connection rather than a separate wall adapter, but power requirements depend on the particular model. Check its specifications before connecting it.

Portable drives are used to carry files, expand a computer’s storage, and keep copies of photos, videos, documents, and other data. “Backup drive” describes a drive’s role, not a different storage technology. One external drive alone does not guarantee a complete backup system.

HDD and SSD refer to different ways of storing data. An HDD uses magnetic disks and moving parts; an SSD uses flash memory and has no moving parts. Manufacturers may use “portable drive” as a broad category that includes both. SanDisk describes portable HDDs as tending to offer more capacity, while portable SSDs are typically faster and more resistant to physical shock; those are general category tendencies, not guarantees for every model. SanDisk’s portable and external SSD comparison and Microsoft’s overview of SSDs, HDDs, and storage types explain the distinction.

| Characteristic | Portable HDD | Portable SSD |
|---|---|---|
| Storage method | Magnetic disks with moving parts | Flash memory, with no moving parts |
| Typical trade-off | Often favors capacity and lower cost per terabyte | Typically faster and more shock resistant |
| What to verify | Actual capacity, interface, power, and compatibility for the model | Actual speed, interface, capacity, and compatibility for the model |
Actual speed depends on the drive, connection interface, host device, and workload. Neither type should be treated as indestructible, and category-level comparisons are not substitutes for checking an individual product’s specifications.
What to check before connecting or choosing one
- Host port and cable: USB is common, but connector types and supported interfaces vary. Confirm that the drive can connect to the computer or other device you intend to use.
- Power: Check whether the specific drive is powered over USB or requires a separate power source.
- Operating system and format: Compatibility can depend on how the drive is formatted. Western Digital notes that formatting may be needed for Windows and macOS use; follow the drive’s instructions and check the host’s requirements before reformatting, since formatting can erase existing data. See Western Digital’s portable hard drive information.
- Model-level details: Capacity and speed figures shown for particular products apply to those models, not to portable HDDs or SSDs as a whole.
Is a portable hard drive the same as an external hard drive?
Not always. “External hard drive” is often used broadly for storage connected outside a computer, while “portable hard drive” emphasizes a compact drive intended to be carried. In product listings, “portable drive” may also include an SSD. If you specifically want an HDD, check that the listing identifies the storage technology as a hard disk drive rather than a solid-state drive. Seagate describes portable external HDDs as devices for storing and carrying files and distinguishes them from SSDs in its portable external hard drive information.
