How to Choose Klaviyo or Mailchimp for a Gift Shop Discount Popup

Both Klaviyo and Mailchimp document popup signup forms that can offer a first-order discount. The better fit for a gift shop depends on its ecommerce integration, coupon-delivery workflow, targeting and testing needs, and whether the discount leaves enough margin—not on signup rate alone.

What a first-order discount popup needs to do

A popup is more than a form: it asks a visitor for contact details and permission to email, then the shop must deliver an offer that works and can be attributed to the resulting purchase. That delivery can happen in the form experience or through follow-up messages. Klaviyo’s documentation discusses targeted signup forms and discounts in a welcome series; confirm the setup for the shop’s ecommerce platform and account before launch. Klaviyo’s discount setup guidance explains its documented workflow.

Define the offer rules before choosing a service. Decide which visitors qualify, whether the discount is limited to a first order, and how the shop will avoid sending an unnecessary offer to existing customers or repeat visitors. A signup is not itself a sale, and a sale using a discount is not automatically incremental or profitable.

How the documented popup features compare

Decision area Klaviyo Mailchimp
Discount popups Its feature page describes first-order and exit-intent discount forms, alongside targeted signup flows. Klaviyo forms Its custom-forms page describes popup offers that can include discounts. Mailchimp custom forms
Targeting Describes targeting based on site activity, products viewed, shopping time, customer profiles, and segments. Describes filters for new and returning visitors, including behavior and traffic source.
Form testing Documents A/B testing forms and offers, including comparing a discount with free shipping. The reviewed feature page describes templates and targeting, but does not establish a like-for-like form-testing workflow.
Form design Its feature page describes popup and exit-intent forms; the reviewed material does not state a comparable template count. Its feature page lists more than 80 templates; that page alone does not establish feature availability across plans or store platforms.
Store data and offer delivery Describes integrations and a customer database; its help material also covers discount delivery through forms and welcome flows. The reviewed custom-forms page supports popup creation and lead collection, but does not resolve coupon-delivery mechanics for a particular store.
Matched cost Not stated for this shop in the reviewed sources. Not stated for this shop in the reviewed sources.

These vendor descriptions support a feature comparison, not a claim that either service will work identically across every gift-shop platform or account. Check the current integration, plan limits, and coupon flow for the shop’s actual setup. The reviewed pages do not establish a matched price comparison.

Which one fits the shop’s workflow?

Choose based on the experiment you want to run

If the shop wants to experiment with form and offer variants—such as a discount versus free shipping—Klaviyo documents that testing workflow. That makes its published capabilities relevant when the shop will use the results to adjust the offer, not just collect addresses. Confirm current availability and setup in the shop’s account.

If the shop mainly needs a customizable popup with visitor filters, Mailchimp’s feature page documents those capabilities and a library of more than 80 templates. The page does not establish whether those features are available on every plan or how a particular ecommerce platform passes coupon data, so verify both before committing.

Make the integration and data path decisive

For either service, trace the whole path: popup submission, consent and contact record, coupon creation or delivery, order attribution, and suppression of customers who should not receive another first-order offer. Choose the service that supports that path reliably in the shop’s platform and existing customer-data workflow. A feature list cannot answer that store-specific question.

Compare plans on the shop’s actual usage

Check each provider’s current plan price and limits using the same contact count and expected sending volume. The available sources do not support quoting a current price or declaring one service cheaper for this shop.

Measure profit, not just signups

Klaviyo’s October 4, 2021 article reports results from an analysis of seven company A/B tests: signup forms with discounts had 90% higher subscription rates on average, and visitors who saw them were 190% more likely to make an initial purchase than visitors who saw non-discount forms. In six of the seven tests, the article also reports more repeat customers per form view for discount forms—nearly four repeat buyers per 10,000 views versus fewer than one without discounts. These are Klaviyo-published findings, not an independent comparison of Klaviyo and Mailchimp or a forecast for a gift shop. Klaviyo says it did not subtract discount value from revenue, so the results do not establish profitability. Read Klaviyo’s analysis and its caveat.

For the shop’s own test, compare economically viable offers and measure the outcomes that matter:

  • Signup rate, to see whether the form attracts subscribers.
  • First purchases and repeat purchases, to track what happens after signup.
  • Discount cost and contribution margin, so discounted sales are not mistaken for profitable incremental revenue.
  • Offer exposure and eligibility, including whether existing customers or repeat visitors received an unnecessary discount.

Where feasible, test one change at a time and use the same measurement window and audience rules for each version. Klaviyo’s documented example is a discount versus free shipping; a gift shop should compare only offers its margins can support. Klaviyo’s offer-testing guidance describes that example.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Confirm the store platform. Check each service’s current integration and whether the shop can issue, deliver, attribute, and suppress the coupon as intended.
  2. Specify the targeting. Decide whether a simple newsletter popup is sufficient or whether behavior-based conditions and customer segments are needed.
  3. Decide whether testing matters. If the shop plans to compare form or offer variants, verify the available testing workflow in the actual account.
  4. Compare equivalent plans. Use the same contact count and sending needs, and check current limits as well as price.
  5. Set the margin guardrails. Choose an offer that remains viable after discount cost, and define who qualifies before displaying it.
  6. Evaluate business results. Track signups, first and repeat orders, discount cost, and contribution margin rather than optimizing the signup rate alone.
