Neither a Pomodoro timer nor a focus app is proven to work better for everyone. A basic timer is a sensible starting point if you mainly need a cue to begin work and take breaks. Consider a focus app when a specific problem—such as phone distractions, a need for accountability, or difficulty seeing your progress—calls for features a timer does not provide. That is a practical way to choose, not a result established by a direct comparison study.
What is the difference between a Pomodoro timer and a focus app?
A Pomodoro timer sets a bounded work interval followed by a break. It can be a phone timer, a dedicated physical timer, or an app that provides only the timing routine. The familiar 25-minute work and five-minute break pattern is one option, not a proven ideal for every person or task.

“Focus app” is a broader category. Depending on the product, it may add app blocking, scheduled limits, session history, visual rewards, reminders, or group sessions. Those features describe what an app can do; their presence alone does not show that it improves productivity.
What does the evidence say about which works better?
The available evidence does not establish a universal winner, and the reviewed sources do not provide a direct head-to-head test of timer-only tools against focus apps for staying on task. A 2021 systematic review and meta-analysis examined interventions to reduce interruption costs in laboratory task performance, while a 2025 scoping review mapped research on the Pomodoro technique in study and cognitive settings. Neither resolves which tool category works better in everyday use.

Reviews of digital wellbeing apps help explain the range of features, rather than prove that a particular app makes users more productive. In a 2022 review, authors classified 8 of 39 apps (21%) as explicitly targeting focused-attention training. A 2023 study found social tracking features in 4 of 13 apps with scientific evidence (31%). Both are feature counts in reviewed apps—not success rates or estimates of how much those features improve focus.
Choose based on the problem you need to solve
You need a start cue and a work-break rhythm
Try a simple interval timer if your main difficulty is getting started or remembering to pause. It offers the core timing structure without requiring you to adopt blocking, tracking, or reward features. Treat this as a low-friction practical choice, not a proven superior method.

Your phone or apps keep interrupting you
Look for a focus app that lists the controls relevant to your situation, such as scheduled app limits, blocking, or an allowlist. Check whether those controls work on your device and fit your work routine. Blocking is a capability, not a guarantee that distractions will disappear.

Session histories, group focus sessions, reminders, and visual rewards may make work sessions more visible or engaging. They are motivational features, not proof of lasting behavior change. In particular, the 2023 finding that 4 of 13 reviewed apps included social tracking describes how common the feature was in that sample; it does not show that group accountability improves focus.

Your work needs different interval lengths
Compare how easily a timer or app lets you set work periods and breaks, pause a session, or handle an interruption. Some apps advertise custom durations, but flexibility does not establish that any one interval is optimal. Pick a schedule that fits the task and adjust it if the routine is unworkable.
You want to keep timing off your phone
A physical timer is an option if opening your phone to start a session tends to invite distraction. It can provide a visible or audible time cue without using a phone app, but there is no cited comparative evidence here showing that a physical timer keeps people on task better.

What features do actual focus apps offer?
Forest describes itself as “a pomodoro-style focus timer with a twist — every minute of concentration grows a tree.” Its official product information also describes blocking, tracking, and group focus features. These are Forest’s descriptions of its product, not independent findings about effectiveness. Check the current product information for your platform before relying on a particular feature.
The US App Store listing for FocusPomo describes adjustable focus durations and Pomodoro cycles, app blocking, cross-device sync, and statistics. Those are listed capabilities, not evidence that FocusPomo—or apps with similar features—outperforms a basic timer.
