The result is an early-stage finding—not evidence that eating pomegranates or taking urolithin A supplements treats heart failure in people.
What the study found
Jie Su and colleagues reported that urolithin A improved diastolic function and reduced adverse cardiac remodeling in a multihit experimental model of HFpEF. King’s College London described improvements of up to 80% in measures of heart function compared with models that did not receive the compound. That figure applies to animal-model measurements; it is not an 80% improvement in patients or in every aspect of heart function. The researchers also examined engineered human heart tissue. In that laboratory model, relaxation and contraction kinetics improved. Engineered tissue is not the same as testing a treatment in people: the study did not report a clinical trial or patient outcomes.

The study identified a mechanism involving Cys42, or cysteine 42, in PKGIα (cGMP-dependent protein kinase Iα). Urolithin A directly modified this site and activated the kinase. In the experimental HFpEF model, that activity was associated with improved diastolic function and less adverse remodeling. King’s College London also reported reduced fibrosis and enlargement of heart-muscle cells.

These results suggest a possible therapeutic target, but they do not establish that this mechanism will produce the same effects in a person with HFpEF. The paper, “Targeting PKGIα Cys42 attenuates cardiac dysfunction in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction,” appeared online August 19, 2026, in Science Advances, volume 12, issue 34, article eaec8088 (DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aec8088).
What HFpEF means
HFpEF stands for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction. The heart may retain its pumping ability, but become stiff and fill less effectively. The study focused on this form of heart failure, not every type of heart disease or heart failure.

King’s College London estimates that nearly half a million people in the UK have HFpEF and says it accounts for roughly half of UK heart-failure cases. Those are UK estimates given in the university’s 2026 summary, not figures established by the study itself.

Does eating pomegranates or taking urolithin A help heart failure?
This study does not show that either pomegranates or a urolithin A supplement treats HFpEF. Urolithin A is a gut-derived metabolite associated with eating certain foods, including pomegranates, but the animal experiment tested the compound—not pomegranate fruit or juice as a treatment. A food’s association with a metabolite is not proof that eating the food produces a therapeutic effect.

King’s College London notes that urolithin A has been evaluated in human studies with a favorable safety profile. That does not establish safety or effectiveness for treating HFpEF. As Dr Joseph Burgoyne, the study’s senior author, said: “While there isn’t enough evidence to suggest that people should eat pomegranates to treat heart failure, these findings raise the possibility that dietary approaches that enhance urolithin A production may help alleviate this condition.”

Professor James Leiper, Director of Research at the British Heart Foundation, summarized the gap: “While these findings are promising, the benefits have so far been seen in animals and engineered human tissue, so clinical trials involving people are needed to test if this approach is effective for patients.”

What to do with this finding
- Read the “up to 80%” figure as an animal-model result, not a forecast of benefit for people.
- Do not treat pomegranate foods or urolithin A supplements as a substitute for prescribed heart-failure care on the basis of this study.
- Clinical trials involving people are needed to determine whether the approach is effective for HFpEF.
