Polymarket Trading Bot: Risk Management for a TWAP End-Cycle Sniper

A TWAP bot’s final slice should follow pre-set price, quantity and time limits. Learn how to assess executable depth, handle partial fills, and verify open orders before the strategy ends.

A TWAP bot should treat its final slice as a preconfigured risk decision—not a last-minute instruction to buy at any price. Set limits for price, quantity and time in advance; inspect executable order-book depth; and reconcile actual fills and open orders before declaring the strategy complete. A market’s eventual outcome determines a share’s payout, while execution risk determines what the bot pays, whether it fills, and what exposure remains along the way.

What a TWAP end-cycle policy can—and cannot—do

A time-weighted average price (TWAP) schedule divides a target order into slices submitted over time. Scheduling those orders does not guarantee that they fill, that they fill at a favorable price, or that the remaining quantity can be completed safely near a deadline. A bot can send every planned request and still finish with an unfilled remainder, a partial position, or a resting order that outlives the intended window.

Here, “end-cycle sniper” means a policy configured before the final window begins. It is not a promise to beat the market, a special order type, or a reason to loosen risk limits as resolution approaches. The policy should be allowed to stop without completing the target.

Separate execution risk from outcome risk

Polymarket’s official “What is Polymarket?” FAQ describes outcome-share prices as ranging from $0.00 to $1.00 USDC and representing the market’s current probability. It says shares for the correct final outcome pay $1.00 USDC each at resolution. A displayed price is therefore a market quote, not a guarantee that an event will happen or that the share will pay out. The FAQ’s mechanics should be checked against current platform terms before relying on them.

Execution risk is separate: an order may not fill, may fill only in part, may execute at a worse price than intended, or may remain open after the strategy window. Polymarket also says shares can be sold before the outcome is known. An early exit is possible only if the market has available buyers at a price the trader is willing to accept; the ability to sell is not a guaranteed exit price.

Set the final-slice limits before the window opens

Define what the bot is allowed to do with the residual position while it is not under deadline pressure. A clock should trigger a decision branch, not silently override the strategy’s price or exposure limits.

How to Day Trade for a Living: A Beginner’s Guide to Trading Tools and Tactics, Money Management, Discipline and Trading Psychology (Stock Market Trading and Investing)
  • As a day trader, you can live and work anywhere in the world. You can decide when to work and when not to work.
  • You only answer to yourself. That is the life of the successful day trader. Many people aspire to it, but very few succeed. Day trading is not gambling or an online poker game.
  • To be successful at day trading you need the right tools and you need to be motivated, to work hard, and to persevere.
  • Position ceiling: Set the maximum position size and maximum notional for the market before scheduling slices. Calculate the maximum permitted final order from the remaining allowance, not merely from the original target.
  • Price cap: Set the worst acceptable price for a buy (or corresponding minimum for a sell). A limit can bound the price but may leave some or all of the desired quantity unfilled.
  • Quantity cap: Limit the final order to the authorized remainder. Do not resubmit the original target after a partial fill.
  • Time boundary: Define when the bot stops submitting, how it handles resting orders as the window closes, and whether it may take any further action after that point.
  • Stop conditions: Stop when the notional, price deviation, residual exposure, or deadline limit is reached. An incomplete target is preferable to an execution that breaches a pre-set risk limit.

Use executable depth, not the midpoint, to judge capacity

A midpoint is a reference between quoted prices; it does not show how many shares can actually trade at or better than a chosen price. Before authorizing the final slice, read the current order book and total the executable quantity available within the price cap. Polymarket’s CLOB guide describes order-book and midpoint queries as separate capabilities, which is an important distinction for an execution policy.

Depth can change before an order reaches the matching process. Treat an order-book reading as a snapshot, not a fill promise. If the eligible depth is below the residual quantity, the bot must follow its preselected partial-fill, all-or-nothing, resting, or abandon policy; it should not infer that the midpoint makes the full order executable.

Choose a final-slice behavior deliberately

The available CLOB guide from the third-party pascal-labs/polymarket-sdk describes the behaviors below. It is not a current official API specification, so verify the semantics against Polymarket’s official documentation and the specific client/API version before deploying. These choices trade off immediacy, completeness, persistence, and residual-position risk.

Choice Behavior described in the guide End-cycle implication
GTC Remains open until filled or cancelled. Can persist past the intended window unless the bot cancels it and verifies that it is no longer open.
FOK Executes immediately in full or is cancelled. Avoids a partial execution under the described semantics, but inadequate eligible depth can leave the entire target unfilled.
FAK Executes immediately to the extent possible and cancels the remainder. Can leave a partial fill, so the strategy must use the actual filled quantity when calculating residual exposure.
Post-only The official status notice points to the POST /order API reference for the post-only flag; the behavior of a would-cross order is not established here. Confirm whether such an order is rejected and how the current client reports the result before relying on maker-only behavior.

These descriptions are not a recommendation to prefer one choice in every market. A resting order can remain exposed to changing conditions; an immediate order can face price impact or slippage; and an all-or-nothing order can fail to fill. The appropriate branch depends on the bot’s pre-set limits and the market’s live depth, not on the label “sniper.”

Reconcile orders and fills before calling the strategy complete

A successful submission or acknowledgment means the request was received; it does not establish that the whole intended slice traded. The CLOB guide describes order-status and open-order queries. Polymarket’s scheduled CLOB maintenance notice points users to the POST /order reference and discusses transaction hashes for FAK/FOK matches. Neither a request acknowledgment nor a transaction hash alone should substitute for checking the resulting order and fill state.

  1. Record the intent. Log the strategy window, intended slice quantity, applicable price and exposure limits, and a UTC timestamp before submission.
  2. Submit once and retain the response. Store the order identifier or other response details returned by the current client, alongside the request and timestamp.
  3. Resolve the state. Query the order status, open orders, and fills using the current official API. Classify the result as filled, partially filled, still open, rejected, cancelled, or unresolved rather than treating all responses as success.
  4. Recalculate the residual. Base any next action on confirmed filled quantity and the actual remaining authorized exposure.
  5. Clear stale orders. As the strategy window closes, request cancellation or use a verified expiration policy, then query again to confirm the order is no longer open. A cancellation request by itself does not prove the order is gone.
  6. Handle ambiguity conservatively. On timeout, disconnect, or unclear response, reconcile orders and fills before retrying. Retrying without checking can create duplicate exposure.
  7. Close the execution record. Log submissions, acknowledgments, fills, cancellations, and final residual position with UTC timestamps. Compare confirmed execution against the plan before marking the TWAP complete.

Exact endpoint behavior and expiration semantics can change. The maintenance notice’s reference to POST /order is a pointer to documentation, not enough to establish every current request, cancellation, or expiration rule. Pin implementation decisions to the official documentation version used for deployment.

Measure completion and price separately

Do not use “all scheduled requests sent” as the completion metric. For each run, retain the target, confirmed filled quantity, remaining quantity, and realized average execution price. A volume-weighted average execution price (VWAP) summarizes prices actually paid or received, weighted by filled volume; it does not show whether the target was completed. Completion ratio and residual quantity answer that separate question.

  • Compare the realized average execution price with the plan’s price constraints and chosen benchmark.
  • Track completion ratio and residual position so a partial result cannot be mistaken for a completed TWAP.
  • Record slippage against the benchmark selected before execution, with its timestamp. A benchmark comparison describes the run; it does not prove that TWAP guarantees a particular price.

Verify current rules before going live

The available material does not establish current fees, rate limits, expiration requirements, geographic restrictions, or account eligibility. It also does not settle current post-only rejection behavior or every market-specific matching constraint. Check the relevant official Polymarket API documentation, fee information, market status, and account/jurisdiction rules for the intended market before deployment; do not hard-code assumptions from a third-party guide or an older platform page.

Keep API credentials private and separate trading logic from signing credentials. For implementation details, use the current official authentication documentation rather than relying on assumptions not established by the order-behavior sources described above.
