Use a limit order when your code needs to specify a price and can tolerate waiting for a match. Choose a market-style order when it should try to trade immediately: FOK requires a complete immediate fill or cancellation, while FAK accepts an immediate partial fill and cancels the remainder. Neither immediate-execution choice guarantees a particular price.
What’s the difference between a limit order and a market order?
The key difference is the order’s priority. A limit order sets a price; if it cannot match the available opposing orders at that price, it may rest on the book. A market-style order instead prioritizes immediate execution, with the actual fill determined by the opposing liquidity available when it reaches the book.

“Limit” does not necessarily mean passive: a limit price that crosses available orders can match immediately. Likewise, a market-style instruction is an attempt to execute now, not a promise that the order will fill or execute at a particular price. Polymarket describes outcome-share prices as reflecting what participants are willing to buy and sell. Its FAQ gives a product price range of 0.00 to 1.00 USDC; that range is context, not a guarantee about any order’s execution price. Polymarket’s FAQ
Which order behavior should your code use?
| Decision | Limit order | Market-style order |
|---|---|---|
| Price intent | You specify the order price. | You prioritize immediate execution; the realized price depends on available opposing orders. |
| Timing | May match immediately if marketable or rest on the book if it does not match. | Attempts to execute immediately. |
| Partial fills | May match immediately or fill over time while resting; the result depends on order instructions and book state. | FOK cancels unless fully filled immediately. FAK executes what is immediately available and cancels the remainder. |
| Main implementation concern | Check price precision, tick size, expiration, and whether the price is intended to rest or cross. | Choose whether partial immediate execution is acceptable, and communicate price uncertainty. |
The @polymarket/clob-client-v2 package documentation illustrates a limit order posted with GTC and market-style orders using FOK or FAK. Treat those examples as package examples, not as a guarantee that methods, defaults, or API behavior are unchanged.

How FOK and FAK change the result
FOK: all now or cancel
Fill-or-kill (FOK) instructs the system to fill the order in full immediately or cancel it. Use this behavior when a partial position would be unacceptable. If the available opposing liquidity cannot satisfy the full order, the order does not leave a partially filled remainder.
FAK: fill what is available now
Fill-and-kill (FAK) executes the immediately available amount and cancels any unfilled remainder. Use it when some immediate execution is useful but leaving the balance resting is not desired. Your application should report the amount actually filled rather than implying the requested amount traded.

These are execution conditions, not price controls. An immediate attempt can encounter different opposing prices as it consumes available liquidity, so show users that the realized price can differ from an indicative or displayed price.

What GTC means for a resting limit order
In the client package example, a limit order is created with a token ID, price, side, and size, then posted using GTC. GTC means good ’til cancelled in that example: the order is intended to remain available rather than canceling immediately when it cannot match. Whether and how long a specific order remains active depends on the venue’s rules and the order’s instructions.

Polymarket US’s rulebook describes standing limit orders and says GTC remains in force until execution, cancellation, or contract expiration. This is a US-venue rulebook; do not assume it establishes the rules for every Polymarket interface. Polymarket US Rulebook (2026.05.19)

- Confirm the venue. Identify whether your integration targets Polymarket US or another interface. Venue-specific rules should not be generalized without confirmation.
- Confirm the current API and SDK. Check the official developer documentation and the exact client version you will use for endpoint schema, authentication, method names, and defaults. Package examples can change.
- Validate price and market constraints. Confirm the relevant market’s tick size and accepted price precision before submitting a limit order.
- Make the execution intent explicit. Decide whether an order should rest, cross available prices, require a full immediate fill (FOK), or accept a partial immediate fill (FAK).
- Handle the actual outcome. Distinguish a resting order, a complete fill, a partial fill, and a cancellation in your application. Do not present an attempted immediate order as a completed trade.
- Explain price uncertainty. For market-style execution, avoid promising a fixed fill price; available opposing liquidity determines what can trade.
The available client-package examples are useful for understanding the distinction, but they do not establish the current raw endpoint path, payload schema, authentication headers, SDK migration requirements, market-specific tick sizes, defaults, or access restrictions. Verify those details in the current official documentation for your target venue and SDK before shipping runnable requests.
