The Hisense HS2100 is a strong low-cost starting point if you want a separate subwoofer for fuller bass; RTINGS places it around $100 and notes that dialogue and instruments sound natural. If you want the fewest boxes, consider a standalone bar such as the Sony HT-S100F or TCL S45H instead—but expect less bass. Prices change, so check the current total at checkout and match the soundbar’s connections to your TV before buying.
Best inexpensive soundbars for different needs
There is no single best budget soundbar for every TV or room. The main choice is whether you want a separate subwoofer, a compact one-piece bar, or streaming features built into the soundbar. The options below reflect the use cases and trade-offs reported by RTINGS or the manufacturers; they are not based on personal testing for this article.

Hisense HS2100: best starting point if you want a subwoofer
The HS2100 is a 2.1-channel bar with a dedicated subwoofer. RTINGS describes it as around $100 and says dialogue and instruments sound natural; its subwoofer adds impact to action scenes and bass-heavy music. The limitations matter: treble can become harsh at high volume, and the surround presentation is not immersive because the system has no satellite speakers. See RTINGS’ budget soundbar guide for its assessment. Treat the price as an estimate, not a guaranteed current offer.
Sony HT-S100F: for a strict budget and a simpler setup
RTINGS says the HT-S100F is often under $100, though its price fluctuates above that. It is a possible fit if you do not need a separate subwoofer; the trade-offs are less bass and no DTS support. Check the live price and the audio formats you use in RTINGS’ under-$100 guide.

Roku Streambar or Streambar SE: for a compact bar with streaming functions
The Roku Streambar combines a small soundbar with Roku streaming features, but RTINGS says its price fluctuates around $100. The same guide identifies the smaller, cheaper Streambar SE as an option when space is tight, with compromises in format support and loudness. Model generation matters: in August 2026, RTINGS’ under-$200 guide replaced the discontinued original Streambar with Streambar SE. Check the exact model before comparing listings. Sources: RTINGS’ under-$100 guide and RTINGS’ under-$200 guide.
TCL S45H: a standalone bar for dialogue-heavy viewing
The S45H may suit viewers who want a full-size stereo bar without a separate subwoofer and prioritize dialogue. RTINGS reports limited bass and surround performance. Although it supports Dolby Atmos, the cited guide says Atmos is downmixed; that does not create the same effect as discrete surround speakers. See RTINGS’ under-$100 guide.

- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.

VIZIO S-Series: compare the exact configuration and connections
VIZIO’s official S-Series listings include 2.0, 2.1, 4.1, and 5.1 layouts. Its page showed a starting price of $69.99 when accessed, but that is a dated listing figure, not a guaranteed checkout price. HDMI is not available on every model, so check the exact SKU and included ports. Treat sound-quality statements on the manufacturer’s page as manufacturer claims. See VIZIO’s S-Series listings.

Choose between a standalone bar and a subwoofer
A separate subwoofer can add low-frequency impact without requiring the soundbar itself to be large. In RTINGS’ assessment, the HS2100’s subwoofer adds bass to action scenes and energetic basslines. The trade-off is an extra box to place and connect. A standalone bar takes less floor space and keeps setup simpler, but generally gives up deep bass compared with a bar-and-subwoofer setup.
- Choose a separate subwoofer if bass impact is a priority and you have room for the additional unit.
- Choose a standalone bar if fewer components and easier placement matter more than deep bass.
- Do not equate format support with surround sound. A bar may accept or advertise a surround format yet downmix it, and a system without rear speakers cannot provide the same physical speaker layout as a system with satellites.
As one indication of how uncommon full discrete surround can be in budget lists, a 2026 Consumer Reports search-result excerpt said that only one model in its budget soundbar list was a complete 5.1-channel system. That count describes that publication’s list, not the whole market; the article page was inaccessible, so no broader conclusion should be drawn from the excerpt. Check the TV fit, placement, and connections before buying
Measure the space
- Compare the soundbar’s width with the stand or shelf under the TV.
- Check its height against the TV’s lower edge so it will not block the screen or an infrared receiver.
- For a separate subwoofer, identify a stable spot with a usable power outlet and enough room for its cable or wireless connection.
- If you want rear speakers, confirm that the specific package includes them; a channel label or virtual-surround mode alone does not establish that it does.
Match ports on both devices
Check the exact soundbar and TV specifications. HDMI ARC is a convenient connection when both devices support it; optical can be a compatibility option on setups without a suitable HDMI ARC connection. Bluetooth is useful for pairing some devices, but it is not a substitute for checking how the TV sends audio to the bar.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRoku Support explains that HDMI ARC uses one cable to send sound to a soundbar or AVR while the picture goes to a Roku TV. It also says the TV remote can adjust volume and mute when CEC is enabled. On Roku TVs, ARC is available across its TV models, while eARC is on select models; enhanced eARC operation requires eARC support on both the TV and soundbar. See Roku’s ARC and eARC support guidance.

Understand ARC, eARC, and remote control
ARC can carry TV audio to the soundbar and, with CEC or system-audio control enabled, allow the TV remote to adjust volume and mute. eARC is not automatically available just because one device has it: the enhanced connection requires support at both ends. If you plan to use it, verify the TV’s exact model specifications and the soundbar’s input labels.
Compare the real cost and the listening trade-offs
Before choosing, compare the delivered checkout total rather than a guide’s approximate or displayed starting price. Include taxes, shipping, and any cable or accessory you actually need; verify that the listing matches the model and generation described.
- Bass and room: decide whether the subwoofer’s extra impact is worth the space and additional setup.
- Dialogue and volume: look for a voice-enhancement mode if speech clarity is a priority, and consider review notes about harshness at higher levels.
- Layout and formats: distinguish a stereo bar with virtual or downmixed surround support from a system with separate surround speakers.
- Connections and control: check HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, Bluetooth, included cables, and whether CEC lets you use the TV remote.
Guide prices are snapshots: RTINGS places the HS2100 around $100, and VIZIO showed a $69.99 S-Series starting figure when its page was accessed. Neither figure guarantees the price or availability at your checkout.
