The best Polymarket alternative depends first on whether you want a cash-settled event-contract exchange or a play-money forecasting community. Those are different products, even when both display probabilities. Before opening an account, check the markets you care about, your location and eligibility, contract-level fees, liquidity, funding requirements, and the exact rule that determines settlement.
Use a platform’s current eligibility and market-rule pages, plus applicable regulator or court information, before depositing money. Access, fees and legal treatment can change by jurisdiction and over time.

Start by choosing the type of prediction market
“Prediction market” can describe two substantially different experiences. In a real-money event-contract exchange, you buy or sell positions whose final value depends on a defined event. In a play-money forecasting community, you trade points for reputation, learning or discussion, without a cash redemption value.

Kalshi’s official explanation describes contracts tied to whether an event occurs. A contract that resolves correctly is worth $1, while an incorrect position is worth nothing. Your possible loss includes the amount paid and applicable fees; the platform warns that members may lose their transaction cost, including fees.

This model requires more than an interesting question. You need to understand the order book or automated pricing, the cost of entering and exiting, the source used to verify the outcome, and the deadline at which the contract is finalized. A displayed price is not a promise that the event will happen.
Play-money forecasting
Manifold describes Mana as play money that cannot be converted to cash. Its user-created markets cover many subjects, and participants use the platform to express forecasts, test ideas and build a public track record. That can be useful when you want broad question creation or practice without risking a deposit, but it is not a cash exchange and should not be compared as though it offered the same financial product.
Why the distinction changes your decision
- Loss: real-money contracts can lose deposited funds and fees; play-money positions do not create a cash withdrawal claim.
- Incentive: cash prices reflect financial incentives, while play-money prices reflect the platform’s points, reputation and community norms.
- Access: cash services generally require age, identity and location checks; a play-money service may have different account requirements.
- Use case: choose cash contracts for financially motivated event exposure where legally available, or play money for forecasting practice, collaborative analysis and experimentation.
The comparison checklist that matters
Do not rank platforms by a single headline feature. Compare the following dimensions for the specific market and jurisdiction you will use.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Product model and denomination
Write down whether the platform uses U.S. dollars, another cash balance, cryptocurrency, or non-cash points. Then identify what one contract or unit is worth at settlement. Kalshi’s documented event contracts settle at $1 when correct. Manifold’s Mana cannot be converted to cash. If a service uses another denomination, read its contract specification rather than assuming that “one share” has a familiar value.
2. Market coverage
Look at the live catalogue, not an old review. Confirm that the service lists the subjects you actually want: elections, sports, economic releases, weather, culture, technology or other events. Kalshi’s homepage shows varied categories, but that is a changing snapshot rather than a complete inventory or a promise that a particular contract will remain listed.
Coverage also includes the granularity of questions. One platform may offer a binary “yes/no” contract, while another may list a range, a multiple-choice outcome or a continuous value. A market that appears similar can have a different payoff because its threshold, time zone and resolution source differ.
3. Fees at the contract level
Never apply one universal fee percentage to every market. Kalshi says it charges transaction fees on expected contract earnings and that some markets have different fees. Check the current fee schedule and the fee indicator attached to the exact contract before submitting an order.

Your effective cost can include more than the advertised transaction charge:
- the price paid to open a position;
- the spread between buy and sell quotes;
- fees charged when entering, exiting or settling;
- funding, payment-processing or withdrawal charges; and
- the cost of changing or cancelling an order, if the service applies one.
For a small trade, a fixed charge or a wide spread can matter more than the nominal contract price. Calculate the total cash committed and the maximum possible return before you compare two markets.
4. Liquidity and execution
Liquidity is the amount of trading interest available near the displayed price. A liquid market generally lets you trade a desired size with less price movement. A thin market can move sharply when one participant submits an order, and the last traded price may not be available for your order.
Check the bid, ask, spread, visible depth and order types. If the service uses an automated market maker, read how its pricing curve responds to trades. Manifold’s FAQ explains that its prices represent market-implied probabilities and describes both limit orders and an automated market maker. That explanation is useful for understanding how a trade can move the displayed probability, but it does not establish comparable liquidity for every platform.

Confirm the requirements before you plan a strategy. Kalshi’s March 2026 individual signup guidance says applicants must be at least 18, may need to provide identity documents, and that some international jurisdictions are restricted. It also places responsibility on the individual to ensure that access and use are permissible and lawful for them.
Do not transfer these rules to another service. Check the platform’s own list of supported countries or states, age requirement, identity-verification process, accepted payment methods, minimum deposit, withdrawal process and account restrictions. A platform can be visible on the internet while still being unavailable to residents of your location.
6. Settlement and disputes
The settlement rule is the contract’s most important fine print. Read:

Two platforms can list a question with nearly identical wording but settle differently because they use different sources or publication dates. Do not trade on a headline or social-media description when the market rule is available.

Kalshi: a cash-settled event-contract exchange
Kalshi’s official materials describe event contracts in which a correct contract pays $1. Its live homepage presents multiple market categories, so it can serve readers seeking contracts beyond one narrow topic. The catalogue is dynamic; verify that the contract you want is listed and read its individual rules.
Kalshi states: “Kalshi is subject to U.S. regulatory oversight by the CFTC.” That is the company’s description of its oversight. It does not, by itself, determine whether every market is lawful for every person or location, nor does it replace advice about your circumstances.
The platform’s individual signup information, dated March 2026, says users must be at least 18 and may have to complete document verification. It says international access exists while some jurisdictions remain restricted. Treat those statements as platform guidance, not a guarantee that an account will be approved in your state or country.
Kalshi’s April 2026 help information says transaction fees apply to expected contract earnings and that fees can differ between markets. Use the current schedule and the fee indicator for the exact contract. A fee figure copied from an unrelated market can materially misstate your expected cost.
Manifold: a community forecasting platform using Mana
Manifold’s official About page identifies Mana as play money and says it cannot be converted to cash. Users create markets across a wide range of topics, which makes the service suitable for open-ended questions and community discussion rather than cash-settled event trading.
Its FAQ explains that a market price is interpreted as the probability implied by traders’ views. That is a signal about the crowd’s current belief, not a guarantee, an official forecast or proof that the event has that exact chance of occurring. The same FAQ discusses limit orders and an automated market maker, giving users a way to understand how orders and liquidity affect displayed prices.

Choose Manifold when your priority is risk-free practice, public forecasting, question creation or community analysis. Do not choose it expecting to redeem Mana or to obtain the payoff structure of a dollar-settled contract.
Other services named in directories
PredictIt and ForecastEx appear among services discussed in directories, but the currently verified material does not establish their access conditions, fees, market coverage or settlement rules well enough for a precise comparison. Treat any older list that presents them as interchangeable with another service as a starting point only. Open their current official documentation yourself before creating an account or relying on a market description.
The same caution applies to detailed terms for Polymarket itself. Do not assume that a past article’s description of its jurisdictions, fees, collateral, settlement or market types remains current.
How to compare two specific platforms without guessing
- Define the use case. Write one sentence such as “I want a cash contract on a specified economic release” or “I want to practice election forecasting with no cash withdrawal.” This prevents a play-money community from being judged by cash-exchange criteria.
- Record your location. Note your country, state or territory and whether you are acting as an individual. Open each service’s current eligibility page and record age, identity, residency and account restrictions.
- Find the same type of question. Compare equivalent event definitions, not merely similar keywords. Capture the threshold, deadline, time zone and resolution source.
- Calculate a complete trade cost. Include the quoted price, spread, stated transaction fee, funding cost and possible withdrawal charge. Use the fee shown for the actual market.
- Inspect execution. Look at the bid, ask, depth and order types. Estimate how your intended order would change the displayed price. If the market is thin, reduce size or accept that the quote may move.
- Read settlement before funding. Save the rule that defines the outcome, including treatment of revisions, postponements and disputes. If you cannot explain how the result will be determined, do not trade the contract.
- Test account operations with minimal exposure. Where lawful and appropriate, verify that deposits, order cancellation and withdrawals work as described before committing meaningful funds. A successful signup is not proof that every feature is available to you.
- Recheck on the day you act. Markets, fees, eligibility and legal conditions can change. Use the live contract page and current platform notices rather than a cached comparison.
How to read a market price
Prediction-market prices are commonly read as implied probabilities. A price of $0.60 on a contract that pays $1 if correct can be read as the market expressing roughly a 60% probability, before considering fees, spreads and the details of the pricing mechanism. It is not a guarantee that the event will occur, and it is not necessarily a statistically calibrated probability.
Several factors can make the displayed number a poor guide to your likely execution:
- Spread: the buy price can be higher than the sell price, so you may not receive the headline midpoint.
- Depth: a larger order can consume nearby offers and receive several prices.
- Liquidity: sparse participation can allow one trade to move the quote substantially.
- Fees: your break-even probability rises when transaction and funding costs are included.
- Resolution risk: an ambiguous rule or delayed source can keep a position unsettled or produce an outcome you did not anticipate.
Use the price as information about participants’ current views. Combine it with the contract rule and your own analysis instead of treating it as an oracle.
Legal and geographic questions in the United States
Why a blanket “legal everywhere” answer is unsafe
The Futures Industry Association’s January 2026 industry report discusses the CFTC’s authority to review certain event contracts alongside state and tribal litigation and enforcement actions. That combination supports a narrow conclusion: U.S. treatment is contested and evolving. It does not support a jurisdiction-wide declaration that every event contract or platform is legal for every resident.
Best Value
A platform’s federal-oversight statement also does not answer every state-law, tribal-law or individual-compliance question. Read the service’s current access terms and consult current regulator or court information relevant to your location. If you need individualized legal advice, obtain it from a qualified professional.
International access
Eligibility can differ by country, and a service may restrict particular jurisdictions even when it accepts users elsewhere. Kalshi’s signup guidance explicitly says regulations vary across international jurisdictions and that it does not provide individual eligibility advice. Confirm residency, identity, payment and withdrawal rules before depositing.
Risk controls for real-money contracts
Event contracts can lose their full purchase cost, plus fees. A simple risk process is more useful than a platform ranking:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Set a maximum amount you can lose before opening an account.
- Keep funds needed for rent, taxes, debt payments and emergencies outside the account.
- Size a position based on the complete cost, not only the displayed probability.
- Avoid adding to a position merely because the price moved against you.
- Track open contracts, deadlines, resolution sources and unsettled balances.
- Keep records of deposits, withdrawals, fees and settlement results for your own accounting and any tax reporting obligations.
Play-money services remove direct financial loss but can still encourage overconfidence. Treat a high virtual balance or reputation score as a record within that community, not as evidence that a cash strategy would perform the same way.
What the market-size figures do—and do not—tell you
The Futures Industry Association’s 2026 report estimates 2025 prediction-contract volume at $40 billion. It also reports that more than $500 million was spent in Kalshi college-basketball markets during the 2025 March Madness period. Both figures are time-specific estimates attributed to that report, not audited current-year totals or guarantees of liquidity on any individual market.
Large industry numbers should not decide which service you use. A platform can have substantial overall activity while the particular contract you need has a wide spread or shallow depth. Inspect the live market you intend to trade.
A practical decision framework
| If your priority is… | Start by examining… | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Cash settlement on defined events | Contract payoff, eligibility, fees, liquidity and settlement source on a real-money exchange such as Kalshi | That federal oversight or a $1 payoff makes every market lawful or suitable for every user |
| Forecasting practice with no cash redemption | Manifold’s Mana rules, community standards, market creation tools and pricing mechanics | That a virtual price is a guaranteed probability or that Mana can be withdrawn |
| A specific politics, sports or economic question | The live catalogue, exact wording, deadline and resolution authority | That a platform’s historical categories or homepage snapshot will remain available |
| Lowest total trading cost | Contract-level fees, spread, depth, funding and withdrawal charges | That one advertised or remembered fee applies to all markets |
| Access from a particular location | Current country/state eligibility, age, identity and payment requirements | That another user’s access proves you are eligible |
Questions to answer before you choose
- Is this a cash contract, a crypto-denominated position or play money?
- What exactly pays out, and what happens if the event is cancelled, revised or ambiguous?
- Can I legally and contractually use the service from my location?
- What will this specific market cost from entry through withdrawal?
- How much can my order move the quote?
- Which official source determines the result, and when is it final?
- What amount can I lose without affecting essential finances?
If any answer is unavailable in the current official documentation, that uncertainty is itself a reason to pause. The strongest alternative is not the one with the longest list of markets; it is the one whose product, access, cost and settlement rules you can explain before you trade.
