The dependable way to solve a circular seating puzzle is to convert every clue into a seat constraint: draw the circle, record who faces which way, anchor a definite relationship, translate left and right from the named person’s viewpoint, keep separate cases when a clue permits alternatives, and verify every clue before choosing an answer. Remember that an inward-facing person’s left is clockwise, an outward-facing person’s left is anticlockwise, and an exact opposite seat exists only when the number of seats is even.
What makes circular seating puzzles different
In a row, positions have two ends. In a circle, the last seat touches the first, so every directional count wraps around. The whole arrangement can also rotate: unless seats are labeled, moving everyone one place clockwise produces the same circular order. You therefore solve relationships, not an arbitrary page position.

The main source of mistakes is orientation. “Left of B” means B’s left, not the left side of your drawing. A second challenge is incomplete information: several arrangements can satisfy the clues until a later condition eliminates all but one. A sound solution preserves those alternatives instead of guessing.

| Facing direction of the named person | That person’s left | That person’s right | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Facing the center | Clockwise | Anticlockwise | Move clockwise for “left” and anticlockwise for “right.” |
| Facing outward | Anticlockwise | Clockwise | Reverse the inward-facing rule. |
| Mixed directions | Depends on each person | Depends on each person | Apply the rule for the person named as the viewpoint in that clue. |
Write the convention beside your diagram before placing any directional clue. If everyone faces the center, a statement such as “B is immediately to the left of A” places B in the clockwise-adjacent seat from A. If everyone faces outward, the same words place B anticlockwise from A.

The two common orientations are mirror rules, not two different puzzle types. The people, seats and adjacency relationships stay the same; only the translation of left and right changes. In a mixed-facing puzzle, there is no single table-wide direction: “left of A” may be clockwise while “left of D” is anticlockwise. Always identify whose viewpoint controls the wording.
Step 1: Parse the setup before placing anyone
Make a short setup record. It should include:
- The number of people or seats.
- Whether seats are labeled or interchangeable.
- Whether everyone faces inward, everyone faces outward, or people face different directions.
- Whether the question asks for one person’s position, an order, an opposite person, or all valid arrangements.
Also list every phrase that signals a constraint: “immediately,” “second to the right,” “opposite,” “between,” “not adjacent,” and “neither next to.” This prevents a negative clue from disappearing while you work with the more vivid positive clues.
For a mixed-facing puzzle, do not apply one global clockwise rule. Determine the facing direction of each person named in a left, right, or distance clue. If the question does not state that direction clearly, retain every interpretation that remains plausible and test them separately.

Step 2: Draw and normalize the circle
Use a seat map
Draw evenly spaced seats around a circle and mark the center. Add an arrow or label showing clockwise movement. Write “inward” or “outward” beside each person as soon as that information is known. Numbering the seats is useful bookkeeping, but the numbers are not clues unless the puzzle explicitly labels the positions.
Remove rotational duplication
Choose any person as a temporary anchor, such as placing A at seat 0. This does not assert that A occupies a special real-world seat; it simply removes identical rotations from your working list. If seats are labeled, use the stated labels instead and do not rotate the arrangement freely.
Track seats as a loop
With n seats, moving one place clockwise from the final numbered seat returns to seat 0. You can calculate a destination as the starting index plus the number of clockwise steps, using the remainder after division by n. The arithmetic is optional, but the wraparound rule is not. For example, in an eight-seat circle, three clockwise steps from seat 6 land on seat 1: 6→7→0→1.
Step 3: Place the most definite relationships first
Start with clues that sharply reduce the number of possible arrangements. A useful order is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Fix an opposite pair, when the circle has an even number of seats.
- Place immediate left/right or direct adjacency clues.
- Attach a stated block, such as a person adjacent to two named neighbors.
- Apply counted distances such as second or third to one side.
- Use exclusions such as “not adjacent” or “neither next to.”
This order is a strategy, not a rule that overrides the wording. If a clue fixes a labeled seat, use it first. If no single clue is decisive, combine two compatible clues into a small skeleton before considering weaker exclusions.
Opposite seats
An opposite seat is half a circuit away. For an even number of seats, the opposite of seat i is i + n/2, wrapping around if necessary. With an odd number of seats, no seat is exactly opposite another, so an “opposite” clue is impossible unless the wording refers to something other than a seat.

Adjacency and blocks
“Immediately left” and “immediately right” identify one neighboring seat once orientation is known. A statement that someone is “between” two people often means adjacent to both, but it may not specify which named person is on the left and which is on the right. Draw both orders unless another clue fixes the orientation. Treat a block as a unit temporarily, then test the block’s two possible directions around the circle.
Step 4: Translate every directional clue from the correct viewpoint
Before placing a clue, rewrite it in a mechanical form:
- Identify the person whose viewpoint controls left or right.
- Record that person’s facing direction.
- Convert left/right into clockwise or anticlockwise movement.
- Count the required number of seats and wrap around the loop.
For example, in an inward-facing circle, “C is second to the right of B” means move two seats anticlockwise from B. The destination is the second seat reached, not the first seat passed. In an outward-facing circle, the same statement moves two seats clockwise.
When a clue names a distance but not “immediately,” count ordinal positions in the indicated direction: the first seat is one place away, the second is two places away, and so on. Do not count the starting seat as one. If a diagram makes the direction visually confusing, write the converted instruction—such as “B, −2 seats”—next to the clue before touching the diagram.
Step 5: Handle common clue types correctly
| Clue wording | Interpretation | Frequent trap |
|---|---|---|
| Immediately left/right | One adjacent seat in the named person’s orientation. | Using the page’s left or the solver’s viewpoint. |
| Second or third to a side | Count destination seats in that direction, continuing around the loop. | Stopping at the edge as if the seats formed a row. |
| Opposite | Exactly half a circuit away; requires an even seat count. | Calling a merely distant seat “opposite.” |
| Between | Usually adjacent to both named people, subject to the puzzle’s wording. | Assuming the left-right order is fixed when it is not. |
| Not adjacent | Remove the two neighboring seats from that person’s possibilities. | Removing additional seats without a stated reason. |
| Neither next to | Both named neighbors are forbidden. | Applying the restriction to unrelated people. |
Negative clues are often most useful late in the solve, when only two or three seats remain. They can also expose an attractive but impossible skeleton early: mark forbidden seats lightly rather than committing to a placement.
A worked example
Consider six people, A through F, all facing the center. The clues are:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- A sits opposite D.
- B sits immediately to the left of A.
- C sits immediately to the right of D.
- E is not adjacent to A.
Anchor A at seat 0. Because everyone faces inward, left is clockwise and right is anticlockwise.
- Place D opposite A: D is at seat 3.
- Place B immediately left of A: B is at seat 1.
- Place C immediately right of D: C is at seat 2.
- The unfilled seats are 4 and 5. Seat 5 is adjacent to A, so E cannot occupy it. E must be at seat 4 and F at seat 5.
Reading clockwise from the arbitrary anchor gives A, B, C, D, E, F. The person opposite B is E. Rotating this order so that another person appears first does not create a different solution; it is the same circular arrangement.
Outward-facing variation
Keep the same six seats but suppose everyone faces outward and the clue says “B is immediately to the left of A.” Left now means anticlockwise, so B moves to seat 5 rather than seat 1. If D remains opposite A and C remains immediately to the right of D, C moves clockwise from D. This illustrates why an otherwise correct diagram can produce a completely reversed order when the facing convention is changed.

Step 6: Keep branches when a clue permits more than one case
Do not silently choose an orientation for an ambiguous clue. Create a labeled case for each viable interpretation. For example, if X is between Y and Z, Case 1 can place Y clockwise from X and Z anticlockwise; Case 2 reverses them. Apply later clues to both cases.
Discard a case only when a stated condition is violated. A case that merely looks less natural is still valid. If two cases survive, answer a multiple-choice question only when the requested fact is identical in both. Otherwise report that the clues do not determine a unique result, or identify the additional clue needed.
Step 7: Verify the complete arrangement
A placement that satisfies the first few clues is only a candidate. Perform a final audit in the original clue order:
- Check every person’s facing direction.
- Check every immediate-neighbor relation.
- Recount every second-, third-, or other distance clue from its named viewpoint.
- Check all opposite relations against the seat count.
- Apply every exclusion, including “not adjacent” and “neither next to.”
- Confirm that no person or seat has been used twice.
- Compare surviving cases and determine whether the requested answer is common to all of them.
Writing a check mark beside each clue prevents an early placement from causing you to overlook a contradiction later. In a timed setting, a final audit is faster than rebuilding an answer after discovering that one directional clue was reversed.
How to solve when the wording is ambiguous
Ambiguous “between”
Some question writers use “between” for immediate adjacency; others use it more loosely for relative position. Let the surrounding wording decide. If the puzzle says “immediately between,” treat both neighbors as adjacent. If it only says “between,” test the interpretations that fit the stated context.

Directional clues require a viewpoint. If the puzzle says all people face inward or outward, use that common rule. If directions differ, annotate each person individually. If a relevant person’s orientation is genuinely unstated, a unique left/right placement cannot be justified without an additional assumption.
Unlabeled versus labeled seats
For unlabeled seats, rotations are equivalent. Reflections are not automatically equivalent: reversing clockwise and anticlockwise can change left/right clues. For labeled seats, preserve the labels throughout and do not normalize by rotation.
Common errors and their fixes
| Error | Why it fails | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Reversing left and right | The solver reads the diagram from their own viewpoint. | Stand conceptually in the named person’s orientation and write the clockwise/anticlockwise conversion. |
| Treating the circle as a line | A valid placement beyond the last drawn seat is missed. | Wrap every count back to the first seat. |
| Assuming “between” fixes both sides | The clue may allow the two neighbors to swap. | Keep both orders until another clue eliminates one. |
| Fixing an absolute starting seat | An arbitrary drawing position is mistaken for a clue. | Anchor one person only to remove rotational duplication. |
| Discarding an alternate case early | A later clue may be the only condition that distinguishes it. | Label cases and eliminate only on contradiction. |
| Declaring uniqueness too soon | Unapplied exclusions or distance clues may allow another arrangement. | Run the complete verification checklist. |
A disciplined worksheet for timed problems
For exams or practice sets, use four small areas on the page:
- Setup: seat count, labels, and facing directions.
- Skeleton: opposite pairs, fixed neighbors, and blocks.
- Cases: alternative placements numbered separately.
- Audit: one line for each clue, marked satisfied or contradicted.
Use symbols consistently: an arrow for clockwise movement, a barred pair for “not adjacent,” and a double-ended mark for an opposite pair. Erase only a confirmed contradiction; crossed-out possibilities can reveal which clue did the eliminating.

When the clues are insufficient
Not every puzzle has one complete circular order. If multiple arrangements survive and the question asks for a relation that changes between them, the logically correct conclusion is that the information is insufficient. You may still answer a narrower question when all surviving cases agree—for example, two people may remain movable as a pair while their opposite partner is fixed.
Do not add unstated assumptions such as alphabetical order, equal spacing beyond the seats shown, a preferred starting point, or a presumed meaning of “between.” A unique answer must follow from the clues, not from the solver’s habits.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know which way is left in a circle?
Use the named person’s facing direction. For someone facing the center, left is clockwise and right is anticlockwise. For someone facing outward, left is anticlockwise and right is clockwise.
What should I place first?
Place the most definite relationship available: a labeled seat, an opposite pair in an even-sized circle, a direct adjacency, or a fixed distance. Then attach blocks and apply exclusions.
Can I choose any starting seat?
Yes, when seats are unlabeled. Anchor one person at seat 0 to remove rotational duplication. Do not do this when the puzzle assigns real labels to the seats.
Does “second to the right” include the starting seat?
No. Count the first seat reached as one and the next as two, moving in the named person’s right direction and wrapping around the circle.
Is there an opposite seat with an odd number of people?
No. An exact opposite is half a circuit away, which requires an even number of seats.
What if two arrangements remain?
Keep both. Answer only a question whose result is the same in every surviving case; otherwise state that the clues do not establish a unique answer.

How should mixed-facing puzzles be handled?
Annotate each person’s orientation and apply the rule separately for every clue. A single global clockwise conversion is unsafe when people face different directions.
The reliable stopping rule
Stop when every clue has been translated, every viable case has been checked, and the requested answer is either identical across all survivors or demonstrably non-unique. The essential habits are simple: orient the circle from each named person’s viewpoint, anchor definite relationships first, count around the loop, preserve alternatives, and verify the entire clue set.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know which way is left in a circle?
For a person facing the center, left is clockwise and right is anticlockwise. For a person facing outward, reverse those directions.
What should I place first?
Start with a definite relationship such as a labeled seat, an opposite pair, direct adjacency, or a fixed distance. Add weaker exclusions afterward.
Can I rotate an unlabeled circular arrangement?
Yes. Choose any person as a temporary anchor; rotations are the same arrangement. Keep labeled seats fixed.
What if the clues allow more than one arrangement?
Retain every case that satisfies all clues. Give a definite answer only when the requested fact is common to all survivors.
Does an opposite seat exist with an odd number of seats?
No. An exact opposite requires an even number of seats.
