Choose Pokémon Ruby if you want Groudon, or Pokémon Sapphire if you want Kyogre. The games share Hoenn, their main story and major features; their biggest practical difference is the Pokémon you can encounter in each version. To collect the other version’s ordinary exclusives, you will need to trade. Latios and Latias are associated with different versions, but the Eon Ticket provides a way to encounter the other one on Southern Island.
Which Pokémon are exclusive to Ruby and Sapphire?
The following list reflects ordinary play in the original games. The roster is drawn from the specialist community reference Bulbapedia’s Ruby and Sapphire version reference; the Eon Pokémon and swarm exception are noted separately below.
| Pokémon Ruby | Pokémon Sapphire |
|---|---|
| Seedot, Nuzleaf and Shiftry | Lotad, Lombre and Ludicolo |
| Mawile | Sableye |
| Zangoose | Seviper |
| Solrock | Lunatone |
| Groudon | Kyogre |
| Latios association | Latias association |
Ruby’s story features Groudon, while Sapphire’s features Kyogre. Latios is associated with Ruby and Latias with Sapphire. In ordinary play, the version-specific encounters make these consequential differences for players choosing a favorite or filling a collection.
Two exceptions to keep in mind
- Seedot and Nuzleaf can appear through a special swarm interaction with Pokémon Emerald while the swarm is active. This does not make them ordinary Ruby encounters.
- The opposite roaming Eon Pokémon can be encountered on Southern Island using the Eon Ticket: a Ruby player can encounter Latias, and a Sapphire player can encounter Latios.
These exceptions are described in Bulbapedia’s version reference.

What is the same in both games?
Ruby and Sapphire are paired Game Boy Advance role-playing games set in Hoenn. Both introduced the region and share the core systems highlighted in The Pokémon Company International’s overview: double battles, Pokémon Abilities and Natures, and Contests, where players use Poké Blocks made from cultivated Berries. The official overview also notes connectivity with Pokémon Box on GameCube.
For a version choice, the documented differences that matter most are the exclusive Pokémon and the associated Legendary. The available sources do not provide a comprehensive inventory of every map, sprite, item or script variation, so smaller presentation differences should not be treated here as a complete comparison.

Do you need to trade to complete the collection?
Yes, trading is the straightforward way to obtain the other version’s ordinary exclusives and complete a collection across Ruby and Sapphire. A secondary availability reference says each game has 186 Pokémon available without trading; it also classifies eight as version exclusives and six as trade evolutions. Those category counts are not a count of every named entry in the table: evolutionary lines and availability categories are counted differently. See Bulbapedia’s Pokémon availability reference.
Ruby and Sapphire cannot communicate with earlier Game Boy or Game Boy Color games. Their release-era options include Game Boy Advance link communication and GameCube-related options such as Pokémon Colosseum and Pokémon Box, as described in Bulbapedia’s version reference. The exact setup depends on the hardware, game version and region involved, so check compatibility for the specific equipment and software before relying on a particular cable or connection path.

How should you choose between Ruby and Sapphire?
- Pick based on the Legendary you prefer: Groudon points to Ruby; Kyogre points to Sapphire.
- Consider the smaller exclusives: choose the game with more of the Pokémon you personally want from the paired lines and one-off encounters in the table.
- Factor in trading access: if you can trade with someone who has the other version or have compatible hardware and software, the exclusives are less of a long-term constraint.
- Match the version to your goal: playing one original game, collecting both cartridges, and completing the Pokédex are different aims and may lead to different choices.
There is no objectively better version on the evidence available here; the useful deciding factors are your preferred Pokémon and whether trading is practical.

Bulbapedia’s Ruby and Sapphire reference describes Generation III as adding 135 Pokémon and gives a total of 386 Pokémon in its Generation III context. It also states the per-version figure of 186 available without trading noted above. These are historical figures reported by a secondary reference, not a current-roster comparison; the cited pages do not state a publication year for the figures.
