On a standard PS5, choose Performance for smoother motion and more responsive combat, or Quality for a sharper image at a 30 fps target. A 120 Hz display adds the 40 fps Balanced options; choose Ray Tracing or Ray Tracing Balanced if ray-traced lighting is worth the lower frame-rate target. Since October 1, 2026, you can also compare the new QSSR image-reconstruction option on your own screen.
Which graphics mode should you choose?
| Mode | Best fit | What to expect on standard PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Smoother motion and responsive action | 60 fps target; dynamic resolution reported closer to 1080p than 4K, varying by scene. |
| Quality | Image detail over frame rate | 30 fps target; dynamic resolution reported slightly below 4K, varying by scene. |
| Ray Tracing | Ray-traced lighting | 30 fps target; reported resolution around 1440p, varying by scene. |
| Balanced | A middle ground on a 120 Hz display | 40 fps target, according to technical reporting; 120 Hz display required. |
| Ray Tracing Balanced | Ray-traced lighting with a 40 fps target | Requires a 120 Hz display; technical reporting gives a 40 fps target. |
The approximate resolution and frame-rate figures are reported measurements from Digital Foundry testing, relayed by a technical guide; they are not fixed native-resolution guarantees. Scene complexity can change dynamic resolution.

Pick a mode for your screen and priorities
If your display is 60 Hz
Start with Performance if you value responsive combat and smoother movement. Choose Quality if you prefer a more detailed still image and are comfortable with its 30 fps target. Ray Tracing is another 30 fps choice when ray-traced lighting matters more than motion smoothness.

Balanced targets 40 fps and offers a compromise between Performance and Quality. If you want ray-traced lighting, try Ray Tracing Balanced; it also targets 40 fps, rather than Performance’s 60 fps target. Sucker Punch added Balanced in patch 1.100, released November 24, 2025, and specifies a 120 Hz display requirement: Sucker Punch patch 1.100 notes.
#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
If you use VRR
Variable refresh rate can help when frame rates fluctuate, but it requires a compatible display and VRR enabled on the console. On PS5, check Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output. Technical reporting specifies an HDMI 2.1 VRR-capable TV or monitor for the in-game VRR options. An uncapped VRR choice is not a dedicated 120 fps mode; frame rates vary. If your display lacks compatible VRR, use a capped mode to avoid judder.
What does QSSR change?
Sony announced QSSR as an additional graphics option for Ghost of Yōtei on PS5 on October 1, 2026. Sony says it improves image detail and stability; Sucker Punch Lead Rendering Engineer Jasmin Patry specifically describes better resolution of fine detail and temporal stability. These are the developer’s stated benefits, not a guarantee that every player will prefer the result. See Sony’s QSSR announcement.

- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Early third-party reporting of Digital Foundry analysis found little performance difference in the game’s 60 fps dynamic-resolution modes, with small dips noted in an uncapped VRR scenario. Because this analysis is preliminary, compare QSSR on and off in the mode you actually play and judge detail, stability, and motion on your display.
Does PS5 Pro change the recommendation?
Technical coverage reports additional PS5 Pro modes and resolution improvements, including Ray Tracing Pro with a 60 fps target. Those are secondary summaries of Digital Foundry measurements, not official fixed-output specifications. The base-PS5 figures above should not be assumed to describe PS5 Pro output; check the mode labels available on your console and choose according to whether frame rate, detail, or ray-traced lighting matters most.

Accessibility options that affect how the game feels
These are not graphics-quality modes, but they can improve readability, navigation, or control comfort. PlayStation’s Ghost of Yōtei accessibility guide documents:
- Subtitle backdrops, speaker names, color choices, and larger text.
- Enhanced wind visibility and off-screen detection indicators.
- A persistent center dot, which PlayStation says may help reduce motion sickness.
- Enhanced combat cues, aim assist, and projectile indicators.
- Simplified button holds, rapid presses, forging, and campfire controls.
Patch v2.0 became globally available October 1, 2026, or October 2 in some territories. Sucker Punch lists a high-contrast accessibility option among its additions, along with Beauty of Yōtei mode, Watanabe Mode tracks, and an option to preserve an armor set’s appearance while using another set’s stats: Sucker Punch patch v2.0 announcement.
