Pokémon Legends: Z-A Switch 2 Edition is the better-performing version when played on Nintendo Switch 2: its official descriptions promise improved graphics and frame rates, but do not specify a resolution or frame-rate target. If you already own the original Switch game, you can buy a separate upgrade pack for either a physical or digital copy. That upgrade’s performance benefits require Switch 2; buying the Switch 2 Edition does not make an original Switch run those enhancements.
What changes between the Switch and Switch 2 versions?
The official Pokémon edition page says the Switch 2 Edition uses the newer hardware for improved graphics and frame rate. Nintendo’s US store describes “enhanced resolution and frame rates.” Those descriptions establish the direction of the upgrade, not a numeric target: the official sources cited here do not promise a particular resolution or a guaranteed frame rate.

A GamesRadar preview of a Switch 2 demo at Gamescom, published September 5, 2025, reported that the demo felt well optimized and held a solid 60 frames per second without noticeable dips. That was one pre-release session, not a final retail benchmark, and the preview did not provide a controlled comparison with the original Switch version. Treat it as an impression, not a guarantee for every area or gameplay situation. Read the GamesRadar Gamescom preview.
Which version works on each console?
| Game version | On original Nintendo Switch | On Nintendo Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Original Switch game | Plays as the original Switch software. | Can be upgraded with the separately purchased upgrade pack to access Switch 2 Edition features. |
| Switch 2 Edition | Can run, but uses the same playable content as the Switch software and does not provide the Switch 2 performance benefits. | Provides the edition’s enhanced graphics and frame rates; apply required game updates to access added features or content. |
Nintendo Support confirms that the original game remains playable on Switch after upgrading, while Switch 2 Edition features and content are available only on Switch 2. The publisher also says the Switch 2 Edition itself can run on the older console, but it is not a way to unlock the enhancements there. Nintendo’s guide to upgrading Switch software and its Pokémon Legends: Z-A update instructions explain the related requirements.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
How to upgrade a Switch copy you already own
- Keep access to your original Pokémon Legends: Z-A game, whether it is a physical cartridge or a digital purchase. The upgrade pack requires the base game; it is not a standalone copy.
- Buy the Pokémon Legends: Z-A Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack through a supported route, such as Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, or a participating retailer. The official Japanese product page lists the pack’s release as October 16, 2025, and its recommended price as ¥1,000 including tax; prices and availability elsewhere depend on region.
- Use the upgraded game on Nintendo Switch 2 and install any required game updates to access the Switch 2 Edition features and content.
The upgrade does not invalidate the original Switch game: Nintendo Support says it remains playable on Switch. For the official edition details, see The Pokémon Company’s Switch 2 Edition and upgrade-pack page.
Japan’s official prices: upgrade or buy the Switch 2 Edition?
The official Japanese product page lists the following recommended prices, including tax. These are Japan prices, not a guide to current prices in other countries.

| Purchase route | Japan recommended price | What it gets you |
|---|---|---|
| Original Switch package game | ¥7,128 | Original game; it can serve as the base game for the upgrade. |
| Switch 2 Edition package game | ¥8,128 | Standalone Switch 2 Edition package. |
| Original Switch digital game | ¥7,100 | Digital original game; it can serve as the base game for the upgrade. |
| Switch 2 Edition digital game | ¥8,100 | Standalone digital Switch 2 Edition. |
| Upgrade pack | ¥1,000 | Enhances an separately purchased original game; requires that game. |
In Japan, the recommended price of the original game plus upgrade pack matches the Switch 2 Edition’s recommended price in either format: ¥7,128 + ¥1,000 = ¥8,128 for package, or ¥7,100 + ¥1,000 = ¥8,100 for digital. This is price parity in the Japanese official listing, not a promise that local prices, retailer stock, or digital-code offers elsewhere will match. - You own the game and have Switch 2: the upgrade pack is the direct route to the Switch 2 Edition features. Compare its price in your region with any standalone edition offer.
- You are buying the game for Switch 2: compare the original game plus upgrade pack against the standalone Switch 2 Edition, including local pricing and whether you prefer a cartridge or download.
- You only have original Switch: choose based on the original Switch experience. The Switch 2 Edition can run on that console, but it will not supply the performance benefits that depend on Switch 2.
- You want a precise performance guarantee: the official material is qualitative, and the 60 fps report is a pre-release demo observation. Neither establishes a numeric retail target across the full game.
Storage and the scheduled Japan bundle
The Japanese official product page lists at least 5 GB of storage for the Switch software and at least 10 GB for the Switch 2 Edition, while warning that installation may require additional free capacity. These are the page’s stated figures, not a guarantee of total storage needs after future updates or DLC.

The same page schedules a Japan-only physical all-in-one edition, “Pokémon LEGENDS Z-A Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + M次元ラッシュ,” for October 29, 2026, at ¥11,128 including tax. The page says its game card contains the Switch 2 Edition and paid DLC. That date is still in the future as of October 4, 2026; availability outside Japan is not established by the cited listing.
Where to buy
The Pokémon US buy page lists Nintendo eShop, My Nintendo Store, and participating retailers as purchase routes for both editions. Retail stock and formats can change, so check the current listing for your country. The official Japanese page also names Amazon.co.jp in connection with download codes; that confirms a Japan route in the listing, not current stock or availability in other markets. Pokémon’s US buy page and the Nintendo US store listing provide regional purchase information.
