What is different about Pokémon Legends: Z-A?
Battles happen in real time rather than in turns: you and your Pokémon can move around while you issue move commands. That makes timing, position, move range and area of effect important, and switching Pokémon can be a strategic choice. If you are used to traditional Pokémon battles, watch where the target is and what is happening around your Pokémon before choosing a move.

Nintendo describes the real-time battle system in its game announcement. The game is set in Lumiose City, where the Z-A Royale takes place in battle zones at night.

Your choices are Chikorita, Tepig and Totodile. The cited official information does not rank them by early-game strength or beginner suitability, so there is no supported “best” pick here. Choose the one you like most rather than feeling that you need to identify a mandatory starter for an easier opening.

How do you make the opening hours easier to manage?
Check Mable’s Research rewards
After speaking with Mable in the Pokémon Research Lab, review the research requirements and complete the ones that suit your progress. When you earn a TM reward, open the main menu and redeem it; Nintendo says rewards are not granted automatically. Make checking the menu part of your routine so earned items do not go unclaimed.
Use your menus to adapt
Outside battle, you can change your active team members from Boxes, adjust moves—including moves a Pokémon has just learned—and evolve Pokémon. Healing items can be used during battle. These options support experimentation, so you do not have to treat your first team or move choices as permanent.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Learn the move-effectiveness symbols
The symbols beside moves give a quick indication of their effectiveness against the target:
- Two circles: super effective.
- One circle: neither weakness nor resistance.
- Triangle: not very effective.
- X: no effect.
Use the cue to compare available moves, while still paying attention to timing and positioning in a real-time fight.

How do you handle real-time battles?
Use stealth before a fight
Crouch or hide when approaching wild Pokémon or Trainers if you want to avoid being noticed and try to begin with an advantage. This is especially useful when you can choose how to approach rather than charging straight in.
Pay attention to movement and range
Some moves carry the user forward. That movement can help dodge an attack or bring your Pokémon into position, but it can also make a Pokémon lunge somewhere you did not intend. Consider the space between your Pokémon and its target before commanding such a move.

- Compete in the Z-A Royale each night to test your skills and try to become the strongest Pokémon Trainer

Recall a Pokémon when a major attack is about to land
Nintendo notes that a Pokémon can avoid an attack by being recalled into its Poké Ball at the right moment. Timing matters, and the attack may hit you, the Trainer, instead. Treat this as a situational way to avoid danger, not a guarantee that everyone will be safe.
How should you approach the Z-A Royale?
The Royale’s battle zones appear at night. Use the day to catch and train Pokémon before taking part, rather than going into a night unprepared. If you are working toward ticket points, Nintendo says progress can build across multiple nights; you do not need to earn everything in one night.

How can you get around Lumiose City?
As you explore, register Pokémon Centers as fast-travel destinations on the map. For destinations you have not visited yet, taxis can take you there. Use these options when crossing the city instead of assuming every trip has to be made on foot.
Which edition should you use?
Nintendo lists Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 Edition is described as offering enhanced resolution and frame rates; that is a presentation difference, not a different beginner strategy. Check the product listing for your region and console before choosing an edition. Nintendo’s UK listing includes the current product details.
For a first session, the most useful habits are straightforward: learn the real-time battle cues, check Mable’s rewards menu, use stealth and positioning, and take advantage of the city’s travel options.
