On Discord for Windows, open User Settings > Overlay and switch on Enable Overlay. If your Discord version also shows an overlay switch beside individual games, turn it on for the game you want. Then launch that game and press Shift+`, Discord’s default overlay shortcut.
How do I enable the Discord overlay for a specific game?

Open the Discord desktop app and click the gear beside your username to open User Settings.

Select Overlay and turn on Enable Overlay. Discord’s current instructions say a check mark indicates that the feature is enabled; an x indicates it is disabled. See Discord’s Game Overlay 101.

If your client shows a separate overlay control for each game, find the target game and switch its overlay on. Discord’s older guide describes that per-game control under Game Activity, but menu layouts vary between client versions. The current Registered Games setting called Toggle Detection is not the overlay switch: it controls whether a game appears as your activity.

Launch the game and press Shift+` to open the overlay. You can change the shortcut in Discord’s keybind settings; see Discord’s keybind instructions.

Why isn’t my Discord overlay showing in game?
Check Windows and the game’s display mode
Discord’s current Game Overlay 101 says the feature works on Windows 10 and Windows 11, not macOS or Linux. Discord’s known-issue guidance says the revamped overlay works in windowed and borderless-windowed modes, but not true fullscreen. Try switching the game to Windowed or Borderless Windowed.

Make sure the game window is focused
The revamped overlay may be hidden when the game window is not in focus. Click back into the game, then try the shortcut again.
Check the right toggle and shortcut
Confirm that Enable Overlay is on, and use the shortcut shown in Discord’s keybind settings if you changed it from Shift+`. Do not rely on Toggle Detection in Registered Games to enable the overlay; that control is for activity display.

Consider elevated permissions
If the game runs with elevated permissions, Discord says its shortcuts and keybinds may not register. Discord System Helper is an experimental option for some Windows desktop users; availability is limited. Details are in Discord’s System Helper article.
Turn off the overlay if it causes game problems
If enabling the overlay leads to lag, crashes, or other issues in one game, turn it off for that game if your client offers a per-game control. If the game crashes and you need to contact Discord Support, Discord’s current support article asks users to collect a Discord hook log and submit it with the game name and issue details.

Can I use the legacy overlay in fullscreen?
Discord’s known-issue article documents a global Enable legacy overlay option for true fullscreen, but warns that this option may be removed. Its availability can depend on your client version. The article does not describe legacy overlay as the standard fix for every game; the supported display-mode guidance for the revamped overlay is windowed or borderless windowed.
