Choose Pokémon Legends: Arceus if you want to observe wild Pokémon, sneak up on them, catch them directly, and build the Pokédex through research tasks. Choose Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet if you want a seamless open-world journey through Paldea built around the familiar trainer adventure. Both are Nintendo Switch RPGs; the better fit depends on which loop sounds more appealing.

What makes Pokémon Legends: Arceus different?
Observation and catching are the central loop
Pokémon Legends: Arceus takes place in Hisui, an earlier-era version of Sinnoh. You work with the Galaxy Team’s Survey Corps to survey, catch, and research Pokémon while helping create the region’s first Pokédex. The Pokémon Company describes it as a journey that brings action and RPG elements to familiar series gameplay. Official overview.

Instead of always starting an encounter with a conventional trainer-style battle, you can study a wild Pokémon’s behavior, use the right approach, then aim and throw a Poké Ball. Some Pokémon are easier to catch after you weaken them in battle. Battles begin seamlessly when you throw a Poké Ball holding one of your Pokémon near a wild one. Official gameplay details.

Each species has research tasks, so completing an entry can involve observing or interacting with that Pokémon in specific ways rather than simply recording a single catch. Research progress also advances your Survey Corps rank and helps unlock access to additional areas. The result is a progression loop focused on learning about species as well as collecting them. #1 Best Overall
- Action meets RPG in this new take on the Pokémon series
- Study Pokémon behaviors, sneak up on them, and toss a well-aimed Poké Ball to catch them
- Unleash moves in the speedy agile style or the powerful strong style in battles
- Travel to the Hisui region—the Sinnoh of old—and build the region’s first Pokédex
- Learn about the Mythical Pokémon Arceus, the key to this mysterious tale
Its battles use action order and move styles
Action order and the number of actions a Pokémon can take are affected by stats and other factors. Agile Style can let a Pokémon act again sooner, but with reduced power; Strong Style increases a move’s power while slowing the next action. That makes turn planning different from a simple one-action-per-turn rhythm. Official gameplay details.
Base camps give you places to rest and craft, and special ride Pokémon help you travel across land, water, and air. The official gameplay page also describes Daybreak as a free update with post-credits content, including mass outbreaks and additional battle challenges; it is not a paid expansion. What makes Pokémon Scarlet and Violet different?
Paldea is designed as a connected open world
Scarlet and Violet take place in Paldea, where towns blend into wilderness without borders and Pokémon appear across varied environments. The games keep the familiar activity of battling wild Pokémon to catch them, but set that trainer journey in a seamless region. Official game overview.

Terastallization shapes battles
Terastallization can change a Pokémon’s type to its Tera Type, creating another strategic factor in battle. It is a distinct mechanic from Legends: Arceus, which instead emphasizes action order and Agile or Strong Style moves. Official game overview.

The expansion is optional and requires the base game
The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero is a two-part expansion: The Teal Mask and The Indigo Disk. It adds areas, characters, rivals, and Pokémon to Scarlet or Violet; it does not replace either base game. The Pokémon Company announced bundle packs pairing a base game with its expansion for release on November 3, 2023. That dated announcement does not establish what packaging or stock is currently available. Expansion overview; 2023 bundle announcement.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you play Scarlet or Violet?
The core choice described here is between the two games’ shared Paldea open-world approach and the more observation-and-research-focused structure of Legends: Arceus. The official overview covers Scarlet and Violet together; the evidence here does not establish a preference between their individual versions. If you are choosing between them, consult the current game listings for the version-specific content and edition details rather than assuming they are identical in every respect.
Can Pokémon HOME connect the games?
Pokémon HOME supports Legends: Arceus, Scarlet, and Violet, but transfers are limited by compatibility: a Pokémon can move only to games in which that species appears. HOME therefore connects the supported games without making every Pokémon available in every destination. Pokémon HOME overview.
