1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Pokémon Hyper Emerald starts a new game, cannot see your progress, or loses a save after an update, first verify that you are running the correct hack build, then make the ROM and .sav filenames match and place them in the emulator’s save folder. Move progress between compatible ROM builds with an in-game battery save, not a save state. For the documented post-League failure, configure the emulator for Flash 128K. Back up the original save before renaming, patching, or changing any setting.
These steps apply to the documented Pokémon Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7 release and, where noted, the Nn-Exe English plus quality-of-life patch. “Hyper Emerald” is also used for other community builds, so a fix described here is not automatically valid for every version.

Identify what “not loading” means
A missing save can present in several ways, and each symptom points to a different check. If the game immediately offers a new game, the emulator probably did not find a matching battery-save file, or the ROM build is not the one that created the save. If progress appears until a particular event and then vanishes, the configured save type may be wrong. If only the Items pocket is empty after loading an old state, the project documents a version-specific stale-memory problem rather than a general save-repair failure.

Protect the original save before troubleshooting
Close the emulator and make a copy of every related file before changing anything. Keep the original .sav in a separate backup folder and work on a duplicate. If you have states, copy those too, but do not assume that a state can replace a battery save when changing ROM builds. A backup lets you undo a mistaken rename, patch, or save-type change without overwriting the only copy of your progress.

- When testing a duplicate, change one variable at a time so you can tell which step affected the result.
Confirm the ROM and hack build
Build mismatch is the most important check when a save disappeared after switching to a “new ROM.” The Nn-Exe English plus quality-of-life patch is designed for the Chinese Pokémon Hyper Emerald: Lost Artifacts v5.7 “bugfix 2” ROM. Its instructions do not make it a patch for vanilla Pokémon Emerald, and they exclude other Hyper Emerald releases named in the project documentation. A save from a different hack, revision, or unpatched ROM may not be recognized or may behave unpredictably.
What to record
- Read the release name and version shown by the project page or file archive.
- Note whether the ROM is the Chinese v5.7 “bugfix 2” base, the Nn-Exe patched build, or another community release.
- Write down whether the save was created before or after applying the patch. Do not infer compatibility from similar filenames alone.
- If the release supplies a checksum, compare your file with the checksum for that exact release. The project lists the original base ROM SHA-1 as
f785bed9d9e82e8da13ea4a5ad747e3ea4ec7ba9; result checksums vary across release pages and revisions, so a result hash without its version is not enough to identify your build.
If you cannot identify the exact build, stop before editing or converting the save. The available project documentation does not establish a universal repair method for an unknown Hyper Emerald version.
Make the ROM and battery-save filenames match
The Hyper Emerald FAQ states that “Emulators match the .sav by file name.” In practice, the ROM and battery save need the same base name, while their extensions remain different. For example, a ROM named HyperEmerald57.gba should use a battery save named HyperEmerald57.sav. A file named HyperEmerald57 - Copy.sav will not necessarily be associated with that ROM.

Rename safely
- Exit the game and emulator completely so no program is still writing the save.
- Open the folder that contains the ROM and identify the exact visible ROM filename, including spaces, punctuation, and capitalization.
- Make a backup copy of the existing
.sav. - Rename the duplicate
.savso its base name exactly matches the ROM’s base name. Leave the.savextension intact; do not add a second extension such as.sav.sav. - Place the renamed file in the folder that the emulator scans for battery saves. Some setups use the ROM folder; others use a separate save directory configured in the emulator.
- Start the same ROM and use its normal continue or load option. If the old progress appears, make a fresh in-game save and close the emulator normally.
File extensions may be hidden by the operating system. Enable an option that displays full filenames before renaming, or you could accidentally rename only the visible portion and leave the real extension unchanged. Also check for duplicate copies in cloud-sync, downloads, or backup folders; the emulator may be reading a different directory than the one you inspected.
Use battery saves when moving between ROM builds
The Hyper Emerald Guide says, “Save states (.ss0, .state) do not transfer between ROM builds.” A save state is a snapshot of emulator memory tied to a particular ROM image and emulator state. It is not the same thing as the game’s battery-backed save data. When moving from one compatible build to another, load the old build, save through the game’s own save menu, close it, and then let the new build read the resulting .sav.
Migration procedure
- Restore the original ROM and the backup copy of its matching
.sav. - Launch that original build and load the file through the game’s title-screen continue option, not by loading a state.
- Save again from inside the game. Wait for the save confirmation and allow any save-writing animation to finish.
- Exit to the emulator menu and close the game cleanly. This gives the emulator time to flush the battery save to disk.
- Copy the newly updated
.savto a working folder. Keep the original backup untouched. - Install or select the intended compatible build, match the
.savbase filename to the new ROM, and place it in that build’s configured save directory. - Launch the new build and continue from the in-game save. Do not load an old
.ss0or.statefile in the new build.
This procedure only addresses migration between builds that the project considers compatible. It does not make a save from vanilla Emerald, another hack, or an unidentified revision compatible with the Nn-Exe patch.

Fix the documented save loss after the League
If the save works earlier in the game but disappears after the League, use the project’s specific configuration advice: set the emulator’s save type to Flash 128K. The Hyper Emerald Guide says, “If your save disappears after the League, set the emulator’s save type to Flash 128K: the hack needs the full 128 KB save.”
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Apply the setting without risking the file
- Close the game and preserve the current
.savin a backup folder. - Open the emulator’s cartridge, memory, or save-type settings. The exact menu name differs by emulator; look for a setting labelled “Save type” or an equivalent.
- Select Flash 128K, not a generic automatic value if the emulator lets you choose explicitly.
- Start the same ROM with the matching
.savand test from the in-game battery save. - Save again in the game, exit normally, and verify that the
.savfile’s modification time and size change.
Flash 128K is documented for the post-League symptom in this hack. The sources do not establish it as a universal fix for a missing save caused by a wrong filename, an incompatible build, a damaged file, or an unrelated Hyper Emerald release. If changing the setting does not restore the file, revert to your backup and return to the build and filename checks.
Handle an empty Items pocket after an old save state
The project FAQ describes a separate case: loading an older emulator state can restore old in-memory data, leaving the Items pocket empty after a later map or battle transition. Technical notes identify this as a version-specific v1.6 migration scenario in which the state bypassed the normal battery-save load. The documented remedy is to reset or restart the game so it loads and migrates the battery save.

Recovery steps for this symptom
- Stop using the old state and keep a copy of the current battery save.
- Reset or fully restart the game instead of loading the
.ss0or.statefile. - At the title screen, load the in-game battery save associated with the ROM filename.
- Check the Items pocket after the game has loaded normally and after any documented map or battle transition.
- Make a new in-game save and close the emulator cleanly.
This remedy belongs to the documented v1.6 stale-state case. An empty Items pocket does not prove that every missing-save problem can be repaired by resetting, and resetting cannot recreate progress that was never written to a battery save.

A patch can be applied correctly yet still produce an unusable setup if the input ROM is wrong. Follow the release’s stated workflow and identify the exact input file before patching. For the Nn-Exe build, the project specifies the Chinese Lost Artifacts v5.7 “bugfix 2” ROM. Vanilla Pokémon Emerald and other listed Hyper Emerald versions are not interchangeable inputs.

Use checksums as an identity check
The original base SHA-1 supplied by the project is f785bed9d9e82e8da13ea4a5ad747e3ea4ec7ba9. Compare it only with the file that the instructions call the original base. Patched-output checksums can differ between release pages and revisions, so use the checksum published for the exact release you installed rather than copying a result hash from another version. A mismatch does not by itself prove that a save is damaged; it may indicate a different revision, a translation, a prior patch, or a bad download.

When the basic checks do not work
If the ROM still starts a new game after the filename, folder, build, and save-type checks, do not delete the file or use an unverified save editor as a next step. The available project documentation cannot identify the cause without more context. Gather the details below before asking for help or attempting conversion.
- Exact Hyper Emerald title, version, and patch, including whether it is Lost Artifacts v5.7, “bugfix 2,” or the Nn-Exe English plus quality-of-life build.
- ROM filename and extension, battery-save filename and extension, and the full folder path used by the emulator.
- Whether the progress file is a
.savbattery save or only a.ss0/.statesave state. - Emulator name and version, operating system or handheld device, and the configured save type.
- The exact behavior: immediate new game, a save that vanishes after the League, an empty Items pocket, an error message, or a file that the emulator refuses to open.
- Whether the problem began after renaming, patching, updating the emulator, moving folders, or loading a state.
Keep the original file unchanged while collecting this information. A helper can then determine whether the issue is association, compatibility, configuration, or possible corruption instead of guessing.
Prevent the next save from disappearing
- Use the game’s in-game save menu as the primary progress record; treat save states as temporary conveniences tied to one ROM build.
- Before testing a new patch or revision, make an independent copy of the matching
.sav. - Keep the ROM and
.savbase names synchronized whenever you rename or move files. - After a major milestone, such as finishing the League, close and reopen the game from the battery save to confirm that the emulator can read it.
- For the documented Hyper Emerald build, record whether Flash 128K is selected and retain that setting when restoring the backup.
- Archive the ROM version, patch name, checksum, emulator settings, and save file together so a later update does not leave you guessing which files belong together.
Practical decision path
Use this order so that low-risk checks come before configuration changes:
Quick Recap
- Back up. Copy the
.savand any states. - Identify the build. Confirm the exact Lost Artifacts or Nn-Exe release and its required base ROM.
- Match names and location. Make the ROM and
.savbase names identical and verify the emulator’s save folder. - Choose the right save type. For a post-League loss in the documented hack, use Flash 128K.
- Migrate correctly. Save in-game on the old build, then load that battery save on the new build; never depend on a state transfer.
- Restart stale-state cases. If only the Items pocket is empty after an old state, restart and load the battery save, treating it as the v1.6-specific scenario.
- Stop and collect diagnostics. If none of these matches the symptom, preserve the file and provide the exact version, emulator, paths, extensions, and behavior before attempting repair.
