It is weak to Electric, Fairy, Flying, Ice, and Psychic attacks. Third-party counter rankings put Mega Mewtwo Y at the top, and the most-cited Flying-role moveset is Gust with Brave Bird+. Mega Staraptor’s Super Mega Raid Day was September 19, 2026, so the event is over.
When Mega Staraptor debuted
Niantic held Staraptor Super Mega Raid Day on Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. local time, where Mega Staraptor first appeared in Super Mega Raids in Pokémon GO. Niantic’s announcement also says eligible Staraptor can raise its Mega Level to Super Max. Mega Staraptor is not a current or upcoming raid event, so any guide that still describes it as upcoming is out of date.

Mega Staraptor’s weaknesses and resistances
Mega Staraptor’s Fighting/Flying typing sets its matchups. Pokémon GO Hub’s current counter guide (updated September 2026) lists the following. The last two rows follow the standard type chart rather than the guide’s summary, which is noted below the table.

|---|---|---|
| Electric | Super effective | Listed as a weakness by Pokémon GO Hub |
| Fairy | Super effective | Listed as a weakness by Pokémon GO Hub |
| Flying | Super effective | Listed as a weakness by Pokémon GO Hub |
| Ice | Super effective | Listed as a weakness by Pokémon GO Hub |
| Psychic | Super effective | Listed as a weakness by Pokémon GO Hub |
| Fighting | Resisted | Listed as resisted by Pokémon GO Hub |
| Grass | Resisted | Listed as resisted by Pokémon GO Hub |
| Bug | Heavily resisted (about one-quarter damage) | Pokémon GO Hub lists Bug as particularly resisted; the quarter-damage figure comes from the standard type chart |
| Ground | No damage | Flying typing is immune to Ground; Pokémon GO Hub lists Ground as particularly resisted, but the immunity follows the standard type chart |
Dark is the one discrepancy in the guide’s summary. Pokémon GO Hub includes Dark among resisted types, but under the standard type chart Dark attacks are neutral against Fighting and Flying. Plan around neutral damage for Dark moves rather than a resistance.

Best counters for Mega Staraptor
Pokémon GO Hub ranks counters using its own raid simulator. Its results are site calculations, not official Niantic recommendations. The rankings depend on the simulator settings the guide displays, move availability, and the player’s roster. The top of the list is as follows.
| Rank (site order) | Counter | Moves cited by the guide |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Mega Mewtwo Y | Psycho Cut / Future Sight+ |
| 2 | Mega Rayquaza | Air Slash / Dragon Ascent |
| 3 | Mega Mewtwo X | Confusion / Psystrike* |
| Near top | Shadow Mewtwo | Not stated in the cited summary |
| Near top | Mega Raichu Y | Not stated in the cited summary |
An asterisk in the guide marks a legacy move, so check whether your Pokémon can still use that move before you plan around it.

How to compare counters
Rank alone is a poor guide to what will work in your raid group. Compare the four metrics the guide reports: damage per second (DPS), total damage output (TDO), number of faints, and time to win. Then check the conditions that shift the results:
- Whether you own the Pokémon and have its listed moves, including any legacy move marked with an asterisk.
- The raid tier, Mega Level, weather, and Party Power the guide assumed.
- Whether the Pokémon is available to you in your region and at the time you raid.
A top-ranked counter that you cannot field is worth less than a lower-ranked one you can field well.

Best moveset for Mega Staraptor
There is no single best moveset for every use. The guide separates a moveset for the Flying-damage role from its overall combination table, so choose based on the role you want Mega Staraptor to fill.
Flying attacker: Gust with Brave Bird+
For Mega Staraptor as a Flying attacker, Pokémon GO Hub recommends Gust with Brave Bird+. The guide reports 21.47 DPS and 547.5 TDO for this combination. Those figures are the site’s calculations under its simulator settings, not published Niantic statistics.
Rank #4
- CLIP ‘N’ GO: Train for battle with the Pokémon Clip ‘N’ Go Multipack
- POKE BALL: Set features three Poké Balls that open from the back latch
- BATTLE FIGURES: Includes 2-inch Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander Battle Figures to place inside
- CROSS PLAY: Works with any 2-inch Pokémon or Clip ‘N’ Go Poké Ball Belt (sold separately)
- OFFICIAL PRODUCT: Officially licensed Pokémon product from Jazwares
Overall combination table: Sand Attack with Brave Bird+
The same guide places Sand Attack with Brave Bird+ first in its all-moves combination table. The cited summary does not give DPS or TDO for that pairing, so compare it with Gust and Brave Bird+ using the same metrics before choosing.
What Brave Bird+ does while Mega-Evolved
Niantic confirms that Staraptor can use an additional Charged Attack, Brave Bird+, while Mega-Evolved. The official announcement lists its power as 70 in Trainer Battles and 150 in Raid Battles. The move’s power increases with Mega Level, so a higher-level Mega Staraptor hits harder with the same move.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Practical checklist before a raid
- Confirm Mega Staraptor’s current Mega Level and whether it has reached Super Max.
- Pick a counter you own and can field at the required Mega Level.
- Check the legacy-move status of any asterisked move.
- Choose Gust and Brave Bird+ for a Flying-damage role, or compare the Sand Attack pairing if you want the highest overall combination.
- Judge the team by time to win and faints, not by rank alone.
Counter ranks and damage figures can change as game data and simulator assumptions change, so check the current guide before a raid.
