The key limits are one active Mega-Evolved Pokémon per Trainer, species-specific Mega Energy, a rest period before free reuse, and raid boosts that use only the strongest applicable Mega bonus rather than stacking.
Mega Evolution rules at a glance
| Question | Current rule |
|---|---|
| How long does Mega Evolution last? | Eight hours, then the Pokémon returns to its regular form. |
| How many can be active? | One Mega-Evolved Pokémon per Trainer at a time. |
| Does it increase Candy? | Yes, catching a Pokémon that shares a type with your active Mega can award additional Pokémon Candy. The official description does not state a universal extra-Candy number. |
| Can reuse become free? | Yes. After a specific Pokémon has Mega-Evolved, it can be Mega-Evolved again without Mega Energy after its rest period, which may last up to several days. |
| Do raid boosts stack? | No. All attacks receive a raid-wide boost, matching-type attacks receive an additional boost, and simultaneous Mega bonuses do not stack; the highest applicable boost is used. |
| What happens to a Mega Raid boss? | It returns to its regular form before the catch encounter. Mega Energy rewards depend on how quickly the boss was defeated. |
How long a Mega lasts and what happens afterward
The active window
Once activated, a Mega-Evolved Pokémon remains in Mega form for eight hours. Niantic’s Help Center wording is explicit: “After being Mega-Evolved, a Mega-Evolved Pokémon will stay in its Mega-Evolved form for 8 hours, after which they will return to its regular form.” The timer is the practical planning limit for both catch bonuses and raid support.

Only one active Mega
A Trainer can have only one Mega-Evolved Pokémon active at a time. You cannot keep separate active Megas for different types and switch their auras on simultaneously. Choose the species whose type and battle role best match the activity you are about to do.

The Pokémon does not lose progress
When the eight-hour transformation ends, the Pokémon returns to its regular form, but its Mega Level remains. Mega Level rises as that particular Pokémon is Mega-Evolved repeatedly, so the end of the form is not a reset.

When Mega Evolution gives extra Candy
The type-match condition
While your Mega-Evolved Pokémon is active, a catch can award additional Pokémon Candy when the Pokémon you catch shares a type with the Mega. The condition is based on type overlap, not simply on having any Mega active.
For example, the useful question before a catching session is: “Will most of the Pokémon I plan to catch share a type with this Mega?” If the answer is no, the Candy portion of the activation may provide little value even though the Mega could still be useful in a raid.
No universal Candy number is established
The current official description says that additional Candy can be earned, but it does not publish a fixed extra-Candy amount, a complete table by Mega Level, or a definitive explanation of how every event modifier combines with the Mega bonus. Do not rely on an advertised single number as a rule for every species, level or event.
How to plan a Candy-focused window
- Identify the species or types you expect to catch during the next several hours.
- Check which available Mega shares a type with those targets.
- Mega Evolve before starting the catch session, rather than spending the active window on unrelated encounters.
- Keep the eight-hour limit in mind if the session crosses a raid, event or scheduled play period.
Cooldowns, free reuse and Mega Energy costs
First evolution and later evolutions
The first Mega Evolution of a specific Pokémon requires Mega Energy. Repeatedly Mega Evolving that same Pokémon reduces the Mega Energy needed over time. The reduction applies to the individual Pokémon you are training, not as a blanket discount for every member of the species.

When a later evolution can cost no Energy
After a Pokémon has Mega-Evolved, it enters a rest period after returning to normal form. Once that rest period has passed, you can Mega Evolve that Pokémon again without spending Mega Energy. Niantic describes the rest as potentially lasting up to several days, but the reviewed official page does not provide a complete day-by-day or Mega-Level cooldown table.
Because the exact rest duration is not stated as one universal schedule, treat the in-game timer for the individual Pokémon as authoritative. A free reuse becoming available does not mean every Pokémon of that species is free to Mega Evolve.
What “species-specific” Mega Energy means
Mega Energy is tied to a species. Energy for one Pokémon cannot be substituted for an unrelated species. You can earn it by defeating the relevant Mega Pokémon in a Mega Raid, completing specific research tasks, and occasionally walking with a Buddy in an evolutionary line that has previously Mega-Evolved.
Choosing between multiple Mega forms
Charizard X and Charizard Y
Some Pokémon have more than one Mega form, and each form can have its own associated energy. Niantic’s example for Charizard uses separate Mega Energy for Mega Charizard X and Mega Charizard Y. Completing the initial full-cost evolution reduces future costs for the form you selected; the other form must first be Mega-Evolved at its full cost.

- Press and hold the central button on the Pokémon GO Plus + accessory and place it by your pillow to track your rest rhythm on the Pokémon Sleep app

- Spin PokéStops or throw Poké Balls automatically in Pokémon GO for hands-free gameplay (and Great Balls and Ultra Balls can be thrown too!)
That makes form selection a resource decision. If your planned catches or raid attackers benefit from one form’s types, spending the first full cost on that form establishes the lower future cost for that form, but it does not unlock the discount for the other form.
Rayquaza’s additional requirement
Rayquaza has an extra prerequisite: it must be taught the Charged Attack Dragon Ascent with a Meteorite before it can Mega Evolve. Having enough Rayquaza Mega Energy alone does not satisfy that requirement.
How Mega boosts work in raids
Two layers of attack support
While a Mega-Evolved Pokémon is battling in a raid, all Trainers’ Pokémon receive an attack boost to all attacks. Attacks whose type matches the Mega Pokémon’s type receive an additional attack boost. The aura therefore has a broad effect and a stronger type-specific effect.

If more than one Mega-Evolved Pokémon is battling at the same time, the bonuses do not add together. Niantic states that “these bonuses don’t stack if there are multiple Mega-Evolved Pokémon battling simultaneously, and the highest possible attack boost will be applied.” A second Mega can still be relevant for its own attacks or type coverage, but it does not multiply the raid-wide aura beyond the strongest applicable boost.

How to select a raid Mega
- Match the raid attackers’ types: A Mega whose type matches the attacks your group is using can provide the additional matching-type boost.
- Check who is actually battling: The boost matters while the Mega-Evolved Pokémon is on the battlefield, so its placement and survivability affect when the aura is active.
- Coordinate instead of duplicating: Since boosts do not stack, several players should not assume that adding identical Megas automatically creates a larger team-wide multiplier.
- Consider the catch objective separately: The best raid-support Mega is not necessarily the best choice for a Candy-focused catching session.
Mega Raid rewards and the catch encounter
Energy is tied to battle speed
Mega Raid Mega Energy rewards depend on how quickly the raid boss is defeated. The post-battle Speed statistic reflects that performance. There is no single universal reward amount that applies to every Mega Raid regardless of completion time.
The boss is not caught in Mega form
After the Mega Raid battle is won, the boss returns to its regular form before the catch encounter. The encounter therefore follows the regular-form catch stage even though the battle itself used the Mega Raid rules.

Persistent progression
Mega Level increases through repeated Mega Evolutions of the same Pokémon and remains after the active transformation ends. Higher levels activate more bonuses while that Pokémon is Mega-Evolved. The level is a property of the individual Pokémon, so repeatedly using one trained Pokémon develops it separately from another Pokémon of the same species.

| Base Level | 1.0 |
| High Level | 1.1 |
| Max Level | 1.2 |
| Super Max Level | 1.3 |
These figures describe the special additional-attack feature identified in the official overview. They should not be treated as a universal damage table for every Mega Pokémon or as a promise that every listed bonus works identically across all species.
A practical decision framework before you Mega Evolve
For a catching session
- Write down the main types you expect to encounter.
- Choose an available Mega that shares a type with those targets.
- Confirm that the specific Pokémon has enough Mega Energy for its next paid evolution, or check whether its rest period has ended for free reuse.
- Start the eight-hour window when you can make meaningful catches, not long before you stop playing.
For a raid
- Identify the raid boss’s weaknesses and the attack types your group will use.
- Pick a Mega whose type can provide the additional matching-type boost to those attacks.
- Coordinate with other Trainers because simultaneous Mega bonuses do not stack.
- After victory, remember that the Mega Raid’s Energy payout is influenced by completion speed and that the boss is regular form for the catch.
When resources are limited
- Prioritize the species you use often enough to benefit from repeated Mega Evolutions and falling Energy costs.
- Do not spend one form’s Energy assuming it will unlock a second form’s discount.
- Keep species-specific Energy separate from ordinary Pokémon Candy; they are different resources with different uses.
- Use the Pokémon’s current Mega Level as one decision factor, alongside type overlap and the activity you are planning.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every catch receives the bonus
The additional Candy condition requires a shared type with the active Mega. A Mega that does not match the types you are catching may not support the Candy goal you had in mind.
Expecting a fixed cooldown
The official guidance describes a rest period that can last up to several days, not one complete public schedule for every Pokémon and Mega Level. Check the individual Pokémon’s in-game status instead of applying a universal number of hours or days.
Adding raid boosts together
Multiple Megas do not create a cumulative stack of raid-wide attack bonuses. The highest applicable boost is used, so team planning should focus on type coverage and the Mega’s own battle contribution.
Confusing Candy with Mega Energy
Additional Pokémon Candy comes from qualifying catches during the active Mega window. Mega Energy is the species-linked resource used for Mega Evolution and can come from Mega Raids, certain research and occasional Buddy walking. One resource does not replace the other.
Forgetting form-specific requirements
Charizard’s two forms use separate Energy progression, and Rayquaza requires Dragon Ascent taught with a Meteorite. Verify the form and prerequisites before committing scarce Energy.
Bottom line for everyday play
Use Mega Evolution as an eight-hour activity window, not as a permanent upgrade. For catches, match the Mega’s type to the Pokémon you intend to catch and treat the bonus as additional Candy without assuming a fixed amount. For raids, choose a Mega that supports your team’s attack types, remember that the strongest applicable bonus replaces weaker duplicates, and judge the Energy payout by battle speed. Build Mega Level on the specific Pokémon you use most, watch its individual rest timer for free reuse, and reserve form-specific Energy and prerequisites for the type matchups that matter most to you.
