Podcast Name Ideas: How to Choose a Clear, Memorable Show Name

Build a podcast-name shortlist from your show’s promise, test how each candidate sounds and reads, and check that it can grow with the show before committing.

A good podcast name tells a new listener what kind of show they have found, is easy to say and spell, and still fits if the show changes. Start with the show’s promise, generate several kinds of names, then test the strongest candidates for clarity, memorability, flexibility, and possible conflicts before you commit.

Start with the show’s promise

Before brainstorming titles, write one plain sentence that describes the show’s subject, who it is for, and what listeners can expect regularly. For example: “A weekly conversation for first-time gardeners about keeping a small city garden healthy.” This is a working brief, not necessarily language for the final title.

That sentence gives you a test for every name: does it help the right listener recognize the show, or does it obscure the premise? A title can be intriguing without explaining everything, but the description and artwork will have to do more work when the name alone is abstract.

Explore different naming directions

Generate candidates from more than one angle before choosing. These are brainstorming approaches, not formulas guaranteed to attract listeners.

  • Subject: name the central topic or a recognizable part of it.
  • Audience: speak to the people the show is for, if that makes the premise clearer.
  • Host or format: use a host’s name, an interview format, or a recurring segment when it is genuinely central to the show.
  • Image or metaphor: use a distinctive phrase that evokes the subject or tone, while checking that it is not so cryptic that new listeners cannot place the show.
  • Tone: suggest the show’s mood—such as practical, playful, reflective, or investigative—without promising a different experience from the one the episodes deliver.

Make a varied shortlist rather than polishing the first idea. A useful candidate should be distinctive but not depend on an unusual spelling or an explanation that only the creator knows.

Test each name for clarity and usability

Check what a listener understands

Read the candidate without its artwork or tagline. Ask someone unfamiliar with the show what they think it is about. If the answer is far from the real premise, decide whether that ambiguity is intentional and whether the show description can resolve it quickly.

Say it, spell it, and search for it

Spotify for Creators advises choosing a name that is easy to hear, spell, and find, and cautions against creative spellings or unexplained abbreviations that can make discovery harder. Say each candidate aloud, then ask someone who has only heard it to spell it. Also try asking someone who has only seen it to pronounce it. Repeated corrections, uncertainty about word breaks, or several plausible spellings are practical warnings.

Search podcast directories and the wider web for close matches, including alternate spellings and names in the same subject area. A clean exact-title search is only an initial screen: it does not establish legal availability or prove that a name will rank in search.

Check whether the name can grow with the show

Consider the show a few years from now. Could it broaden its subject, change its format, or welcome new hosts without making the title misleading? Spotify’s naming guidance from 2022 encourages creators to consider whether a name will still make sense years later. A very narrow name may be right for a deliberately focused series; it is a drawback if you already expect the subject to expand.

Use length as a prompt, not a rule

Spotify for Creators reports that shows on its platform average 3–4 words and 15–20 characters. That is a Spotify-specific descriptive average, not evidence that every effective title must fit those dimensions. Use it as a reason to look for unnecessary words, not as a pass-or-fail test.

Likewise, do not add “podcast” automatically. Spotify’s 2022 advice notes that the format may already be clear to audiences and that generic wording can make a title less distinctive while browsing. Include the word only if it adds useful meaning in your context. Spotify product marketing associate director Alex Bousquet puts the brevity case this way: “Save the seven characters in ‘podcast’ to make your show name more unique, or to keep your show name short and simple.”

Compare finalists against the same criteria

Use a consistent review so that a clever-sounding candidate does not win just because it is fun to say. Score each criterion from 1 (weak) to 5 (strong), then discuss any low score rather than treating the total as a scientific prediction.

Criterion Ask
Premise clarity Can the intended listener infer the subject or audience?
Distinctiveness Does it stand apart in both spoken and written form from close matches?
Sayability and spelling Can someone pronounce it, remember it, and spell it after hearing it?
Flexibility Will it remain accurate if the show evolves as planned?
Conflict and policy check Have you investigated similar show names and relevant rights instead of assuming a search result is legal clearance?

For a tie, prefer the name that is clearer to the intended audience and needs less explanation. A score helps structure a decision; it cannot forecast downloads or search placement.

Check accuracy and rights before investing

Apple’s creator rules require show metadata to represent the content accurately and prohibit infringement of others’ rights, including trademark rights. A name that seems available in a directory or web search is not thereby cleared. The platform rules are not a complete legal-clearance procedure, and a general article cannot determine whether a particular candidate is legally available in every jurisdiction.

Before commissioning artwork or spending on promotion, compare the finalist with existing shows and relevant names used in your subject area. If a close match or potential rights conflict appears, do not assume that changing punctuation or adding a generic word solves it; seek appropriate legal advice for your circumstances.

Make the description carry the explanatory detail

A title does not have to contain every topic keyword. Apple recommends that a show description explain what the show covers and why it may matter to listeners, using words its audience might search for naturally. Describe the real subject, audience, and benefit rather than stuffing in repeated terms. Apple also says the app already displays the show name, so the description need not repeat it.

Share the title and draft description with a trusted reader who represents the intended audience. Ask what they think the show is about, who it is for, and what they expect to hear. If their expectation differs from the actual plan, revise the name or clarify the description before launch.

After choosing: naming is separate from publishing

Choosing a title does not publish a show. Apple says creators need an Apple Podcasts Connect account to submit a show, and its submission requirements also cover the feed and hosting setup. For shows hosted by a third party, Apple’s episode guidance directs creators to add episode content through that provider. Treat those as separate launch tasks after the name and metadata accurately describe the show.
