Begin with a quiet place to record and listen back to a test; consider an external microphone if the built-in one does not give you the sound you want. Headphones can help you monitor a session, but they are not a universal requirement. The right setup depends on whether you record solo, with people in the same room, remotely, or on video.
What you need for your first recording
Keep the first setup simple: use your existing phone or computer, record in a quiet space, and listen to the result before publishing. YouTube’s creator equipment guidance recommends matching equipment to your goals and notes that the best equipment may be what you already have. YouTube’s video equipment tips are general creator guidance, not a podcast-specific equipment test.

- Phone or computer: Start with a device you already have that can record your voice.
- Quiet recording space: Reduce interruptions and distracting background noise where practical.
- Listen-back check: Record a short sample and play it back before committing to a full episode.
What to upgrade first
External microphone
If the built-in microphone does not sound the way you want, an external microphone is a reasonable first upgrade to consider. YouTube lists external microphones among common creator hardware, but its guidance does not compare models or establish one best microphone. Choose based on the limitation you have noticed rather than buying a full kit before recording.

Headphones can help you monitor a recording or notice a problem during a conversation. YouTube includes headphones among common streaming hardware, but that does not make them mandatory for every podcast. Treat them as a useful option when your recording setup or workflow benefits from listening while recording.

Choose equipment for the kind of show you are making
| Show format | Practical starting point | When to add equipment |
|---|---|---|
| Solo, audio-only | Use your phone or computer and check a short recording. | Consider an external microphone if the built-in one falls short of your needs. |
| Several people in one room | Plan around the number of speakers and how you will capture each voice. | Additional microphones or a mixer may become relevant as the setup grows; they are not a default beginner shopping list. |
| Remote conversation | Use a recording setup that works for the people and locations involved. | Headphones may be useful for monitoring. The equipment needs depend on the remote recording workflow. |
| Video podcast | Decide whether the show needs video as well as audio. | A camera or other video equipment may be relevant; keep that decision separate from the core audio setup. |
YouTube’s guidance says there is no one-size-fits-all equipment choice. Its list of microphones, cameras, mixers, and encoders for professional live streams describes more advanced live production, not a required starter podcast kit. Upgrade as a real need emerges and keep costs down while you develop your workflow.
Publishing a podcast on YouTube
YouTube treats a podcast as a playlist of full episodes, with each episode represented by a video. An MP3 file by itself cannot be made into a YouTube podcast. For the current setup instructions and availability details, see Create a podcast in YouTube Studio.
