Live Streaming Protocols Explained: RTMP, HLS, and More

RTMP and HLS serve different parts of a live-video workflow. Learn how contribution, adaptive delivery, SRT, WebRTC, WHIP, and latency fit together.

RTMP, HLS, SRT, MPEG-DASH, and WebRTC do different jobs in a live-video workflow. RTMP and SRT are commonly used to carry a contribution stream from a production source toward a service; HLS and MPEG-DASH are adaptive HTTP formats for delivering playable media to viewers; WebRTC is designed for interactive real-time communication, and WHIP provides an HTTP-based way to ingest WebRTC media. Choose by workflow and endpoint support—not by assuming one protocol is best for every stage.

First, separate contribution from viewer delivery

A typical live-video workflow has at least two distinct network legs. On the contribution or ingest leg, an encoder or production system sends encoded media to a service. On the delivery leg, that service makes media available to viewers through a player, often using an adaptive HTTP format.

This distinction explains why “RTMP vs HLS” is often a misleading comparison: RTMP is associated with contribution in some workflows, while HLS is a playback format. A service may accept one protocol at ingest and deliver the stream to viewers using another. The service’s documented input and output support determines what is possible.

A protocol is not a video codec, an encoder, a streaming platform, or a guarantee of end-to-end latency. Codec and packaging choices, servers, CDNs, network conditions, and player behavior all matter too.

What each technology does

Technology What it is Typical role What to check
RTMP A real-time messaging and stream transport used in some contribution workflows Encoder or production tool to an ingest endpoint Whether the receiver accepts it, codec compatibility, the network path, and operational fit
HLS An HTTP-based live and on-demand media delivery format Service, server, or CDN to a player Player and device support, adaptive-bitrate renditions, CDN fit, and latency configuration
MPEG-DASH A standards-based adaptive HTTP streaming format Service, server, or CDN to a player Player and platform support, media format and codec profile, packaging, and latency features
SRT An open-source transport technology Contribution or distribution across variable networks Endpoint support, packet-loss recovery, encryption, and configured latency
WebRTC An interactive real-time communication framework using RTP and RTCP Browser or app interaction and other real-time media paths Interactivity needs, signaling and connectivity, encryption, and deployment scale
WHIP An HTTP-based protocol for WebRTC ingestion WebRTC source to a streaming service or CDN Endpoint support, workflow integration, and whether the destination is meant for interactive or conventional playback

RTMP: a contribution option, not a viewer format comparison

RTMP remains a familiar ingest or contribution option in some production workflows. An industry workflow paper from the CDN Alliance lists RTMP alongside SRT and WHIP as ways to send encoded streams into CDN or cloud infrastructure. It describes HLS or DASH ingest as possible but rarely used in the practice covered by that paper; this is an account of industry practice, not a rule that applies to every platform.

The receiving service decides what it accepts. Check its current ingest documentation before configuring an encoder, and verify supported codecs and settings there. The available standards context here does not establish current RTMP support or codec limits for any particular named platform, so do not infer those from RTMP’s familiarity.

HLS: adaptive delivery over HTTP

Apple describes HLS as a way to send audio and video over HTTP using ordinary web servers and CDN infrastructure. It supports live and prerecorded media, alternate-bitrate streams, and playback that can adapt to changing network conditions. Apple’s HLS overview puts the goal plainly: “HLS is designed for reliability and dynamically adapts to network conditions by optimizing playback for the available speed of wired and wireless connections.”

HLS is useful when the delivery system needs to offer viewers different renditions and let compatible players select among them as conditions change. Actual support depends on the player, device, packaging, and delivery setup. Apple’s authoring guidance specifies practices for Apple-platform delivery; it is not a universal requirement for every HLS ecosystem.

What Low-Latency HLS changes

Low-Latency HLS adds features such as partial media segments, playlist delta updates, blocking reloads, preload hints, and rendition reports. These features can reduce waiting in a suitably configured workflow, but they depend on server and delivery-path support. If the required low-latency configuration is not met, clients can fall back to regular-latency playback.

Apple’s current HLS authoring specification recommends a one-second target duration for Low-Latency HLS parts. That is a part-target recommendation, not a promise of one-second glass-to-glass latency. Apple also says the target must be at least the maximum round-trip time expected for 95% of clients and should be at least three times that P95 round-trip time. The network conditions and backend behavior therefore affect how the recommendation is applied.

MPEG-DASH: another adaptive HTTP delivery family

MPEG describes DASH as supporting both live and on-demand streaming. The standard includes provisions for MPEG-4 and MPEG-2 Transport Streams and can also be used with other media formats. Like HLS, it belongs to the adaptive HTTP delivery side of a workflow, rather than being a direct substitute for a contribution transport such as RTMP.

There is no basis here for declaring DASH universally better or worse than HLS. Compare the actual content, packaging, player and device support, and infrastructure available for your workflow.

SRT: transport for less predictable networks

SRT is an open-source transport technology intended for media transfer across unpredictable networks. Haivision’s SRT documentation describes its role in streaming across such networks, while the SRT project documentation highlights encryption and recovery from packet loss. The project’s protocol draft describes a UDP-based, user-level transport with reliability and security mechanisms.

Those transport features do not make SRT an encoder, a video codec, or an adaptive HTTP playback format. You still need to decide how media is encoded and how a viewer-facing service will package and deliver it. Confirm that both endpoints support SRT and agree on the relevant configuration, including the latency budget.

WebRTC and WHIP: real-time interaction and ingest

WebRTC is designed for interactive real-time communication, including audio, video, and other collaboration between peers. In the WebRTC transport model, RTP carries media and RTCP supports associated control functions; the IETF’s RFC 8834 requires protected transport using SRTP and SRTCP for generated RTP and RTCP packets.

WHIP, defined in IETF RFC 9725 in March 2025, is an HTTP-based protocol for ingesting WebRTC media into streaming services or CDNs. Its specification describes uses that can feed conventional media platforms as well as WebRTC end-to-end platforms. WHIP is an ingest path for WebRTC content, not a synonym for every WebRTC workflow or for HLS playback.

Which streaming protocol should you use?

Start with the endpoint and the job you need to do, then check compatibility at both ends. A protocol that fits one leg of the workflow may not fit the next.

  1. For encoder-to-service contribution: use an ingest protocol the receiving service explicitly supports. RTMP is still named as an option in some workflows; SRT may suit contribution or distribution over less predictable networks; WHIP is relevant when the source and service use WebRTC ingestion.
  2. For service-to-viewer delivery: compare HLS and MPEG-DASH support across your packaging, CDN, player, and viewer devices. Consider adaptive playback and the latency features the complete delivery path supports.
  3. For interactive communication: evaluate WebRTC’s real-time communication path and the signaling, connectivity, security, and scale your application needs. WHIP may be relevant when ingesting WebRTC media into a service.
  4. Verify the whole path: confirm compatible media formats and codecs, endpoint configuration, network behavior, player support, and any fallback behavior before choosing.

What determines live-stream latency?

“Low latency” is an end-to-end result, not a property guaranteed by a protocol name. Packaging duration, playlist or signaling behavior, server and CDN support, network path, player buffering, and encoder and decoder delay all contribute. A low-latency feature can help only when the rest of the workflow supports it.

The cited sources do not provide a controlled, cross-protocol end-to-end latency benchmark for RTMP, HLS, DASH, SRT, and WebRTC. It would therefore be misleading to give a universal latency ranking or promise a specific glass-to-glass delay from choosing one of them.
