POCO also lists lower figures for larger display areas and everyday brightness modes, so the headline peak alone does not establish that the phone will be easier to read outdoors or brighter in typical apps.
What does 10,000 nits mean on the POCO F9 Ultra?
It is a conditional peak-brightness specification: POCO Australia says the display can reach 10,000 nits over 1% of its area and 4,500 nits over 25%. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements. POCO’s UAE product page presents the 10,000-nit figure as a peak for HDR-video highlights, while describing 4,500 nits as a multi-scenario peak.

That distinction matters because the brightest part of an HDR image might be a small highlight, such as a light or reflection. A small bright region is not equivalent to a full-screen white image, a normal app screen, or a brightness level the panel maintains across the display. The manufacturer’s figures do not establish that every HDR scene reaches 10,000 nits.
POCO and Xiaomi use several different brightness figures for the phone. They refer to different conditions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable:

Why a higher peak does not guarantee better outdoor visibility
Outdoor readability depends on the brightness available across the screen in the mode and conditions you are using—not only on a peak confined to a small HDR area. Xiaomi’s Philippines FAQ says Sunlight mode raises brightness and contrast to improve visibility outdoors, and that automatic brightness must be enabled to use it. The FAQ lists 1,060 nits for Sunlight mode, a separate figure from the 10,000-nit HDR peak.

Notebookcheck’s 2026 review found the phone easy to read in direct sunlight, but did not find that it outperformed its predecessor for typical content or outdoor readability. Its APL18 measurement was 2,435 cd/m² on the reviewed sample. That is a method-specific result, not a universal brightness figure for every unit or viewing condition.

As a result, that test did not independently establish a precise 10,000-nit measurement. Daniel Schmidt, Notebookcheck’s Managing Editor Mobile, concluded: “The 10,000 cd/m² is thus primarily a spectacular peak value for small HDR areas rather than a practical upgrade.”

How to compare phone brightness figures fairly
Before treating a larger number as a display advantage, check whether the phones are being measured under comparable conditions:

- Display area: Is the value measured on 1% of the screen, 25%, or a larger area? A small-area peak is not comparable to a whole-screen result.
- Content: Does the claim refer to HDR highlights, SDR content, or a general-use mode?
- Brightness mode: Is it a peak, global HBM, Sunlight mode, or manually adjustable brightness?
- Test method: For independent results, compare the same pattern or area-based measurement, and note the test sample and conditions.
Do not directly compare one phone maker’s 1%-area peak with another phone’s global-brightness figure. If the available sources do not establish matching conditions, the numbers do not support a straightforward ranking.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat the 10,000-nit figure means if you are buying the phone
The headline is most relevant if you care about small, bright HDR highlights. It is not, by itself, evidence of a meaningful improvement in ordinary screen use or sunlight readability. For that, look for independent results using comparable methods and direct observations of outdoor visibility. Notebookcheck’s review suggests the F9 Ultra remains readable in direct sun, while the 10,000-nit peak did not translate into an outdoor-readability advantage over its predecessor in that review.
