Pocket Pilot is Asif Mithawala’s reported way to monitor and steer GitHub Copilot agent sessions from a phone while they keep running on his PC. Its design avoids a Pocket Pilot application server, but it is not serverless in the literal sense: the setup relies on hosting and tunnel infrastructure, and the author’s end-to-end encryption claims have not been independently audited.
What Pocket Pilot is designed to do
In his October 1, 2026 article, Mithawala describes Pocket Pilot as a phone interface for agent sessions in VS Code and the Copilot app or CLI. The agent work stays on the PC; the phone provides a remote way to follow and interact with it.

From the phone, the interface is described as showing session history and live updates, accepting replies and steering, and letting the user approve or skip tool calls. It can also notify the user when an agent needs attention, finishes, or fails. The motivating case is an agent paused for terminal approval while its owner is away from the desk.

PC relay, tunnel, and phone app
The author describes the phone app as a static web app hosted on GitHub Pages. A relay runs on the user’s PC and connects outward through a Cloudflare quick tunnel, so the setup does not require opening a port on the home router. The phone connects to that reachable tunnel address; the PC remains where the agent sessions run.

- Long-lasting battery + TurboPower charging. Power through day after day with a 5200mAh battery, then get hours of power in just minutes.****
Calling this “zero servers” needs qualification. The author means there is no Pocket Pilot application backend relaying the sessions. The design still uses third-party hosting and tunnel infrastructure, as well as browser push services for notifications. An optional recovery method stores a changing tunnel address in an encrypted note in a secret gist on the user’s GitHub account.
The tunnel address can change after a PC reboot, according to the author. The optional note is intended to help the user recover the current address; it does not make the tunnel address permanent.

Connecting to different Copilot environments
For VS Code sessions, the phone client is described as speaking the VS Code Agent Host Protocol (AHP). On the desktop, an extension connects to the local agent host over a named pipe or Unix socket and applies an allow-list to requests coming from the phone.

For Copilot app and CLI chats, Mithawala says a plugin implements an AHP server and translates runtime events into AHP actions. These are implementation details reported by the project’s author, not independently verified compatibility guarantees.

What the encryption and pairing claims mean
Mithawala describes pairing a phone by scanning a QR code containing the tunnel address, a single-use pairing token, and a host-key fingerprint. The reported design uses long-term device and host keys, ephemeral ECDH P-256 key exchange, HKDF-SHA-256 to derive separate directional keys, and AES-256-GCM to encrypt application frames.
The author also says the system requires a device key plus a human factor—a passkey or authenticator code—and that a new pairing must be approved on the PC. These details explain the design the author reports; they are not evidence of an independent cryptographic review, a security audit, or proof that every deployment is secure. A reader evaluating it for sensitive work should distinguish the stated design from externally validated security.

How Pocket Pilot differs from GitHub’s /remote
Mithawala’s article contrasts Pocket Pilot with GitHub’s /remote feature. The distinctions below reflect the author’s October 1, 2026 description, not a separately checked current feature matrix; availability and behavior may change.

|---|---|---|
| Where work runs | Agent sessions run on the user’s PC. | A Copilot CLI session is streamed to GitHub.com and GitHub Mobile. |
| How a session is reached | The phone connects to the PC through the relay and tunnel setup. | The user connects to a CLI session through GitHub.com or GitHub Mobile. |
| Session scope | The author says it displays every session on the PC and can start sessions there. | The article describes streaming a Copilot CLI session. |
| Availability condition | The article describes a user-managed PC setup. | The author says /remote is enabled by an organization. |
The author says the two approaches can coexist. The practical distinction in this account is whether the user wants a phone to reach sessions on their own PC or to use GitHub’s remote CLI-session flow. Because organizational availability and product behavior can change, check current GitHub documentation before relying on the comparison for a setup decision.

Push notifications and the iPhone setup
The article says the PC sends notifications directly using Web Push, with accepted push endpoints limited to services from Apple, Google, Mozilla, or Microsoft. For iPhone push, the author says the PWA must be added to the Home Screen and that iOS 16.4 or later is required.
The reported bottom-gap bug
Mithawala reports a black band at the bottom of the iPhone Home Screen web app. He initially suspected an inset issue, then attributed it to WebKit bug 301994: in his account, starting with iOS 26.5, the Home Screen web app view stopped short of the screen bottom in the full-screen configuration he used. He says Apple reproduced the issue in an iOS 27 beta.
His reported workaround was to use an opaque status bar and remove viewport-fit=cover. The trade-off was a solid black status bar. The version behavior and reproduction are the author’s report and should be treated as time-sensitive, not as a confirmed description of every iPhone or iOS release.
Other problems from development
- Safari message expansion: The author says Safari ignored a line clamp on queued messages, so selecting “Show less” could make a message longer. The reported fix put expanded text in a bounded scroll area.
- Windows plugin updates: A file lock prevented plugin updates while VS Code held the plugin’s
skills/directory open. The author says he moved the skill into the user’s own skills directory and resolved a command/skill name collision.
What the reported testing does—and does not—show
Mithawala reports 132 tests using Node’s built-in node:test, including an end-to-end run against a real Copilot runtime. That is an author-reported test count, not an independently reproduced result. It does not by itself establish security, broad device compatibility, or reliability across all Copilot versions and configurations.
The article frames the project around the author’s stated motivation: “Your code and your agent sessions shouldn’t pass through someone else’s database, and a side project shouldn’t come with a hosting bill.” That explains the design goal; it is not a measurement of data handling or total operating cost.
