Optical Gigabit Ethernet is Ethernet running at 1,000 Mb/s over fiber using an optical physical layer (PHY). The Ethernet frame format does not become a different format; the PHY is the part selected for the medium. The common fiber options are 1000BASE-SX and 1000BASE-LX, and choosing between them requires matching the optics to the fiber, the equipment and the planned link distance.

What “optical Gigabit Ethernet” means

“Gigabit” refers to a nominal Ethernet PHY speed of 1,000 Mb/s. “Optical” means that the physical connection carries the signal over fiber rather than copper. IEEE 802.3 specifies a common Ethernet media access control (MAC) alongside PHYs for different speeds and media; its 1,000 Mb/s family includes 1000BASE-SX and 1000BASE-LX optical PHYs, as well as 1000BASE-T over twisted pair. IEEE’s 802.3 overview describes Ethernet operation across selected speeds from 1 Mb/s to 400 Gb/s using a common MAC specification.

So the term describes a Gigabit Ethernet link whose physical layer is optical—not a separate Ethernet frame format or a guarantee of a particular reach. The PHY and transceiver must match the fiber and the equipment at both ends.

How 1000BASE-SX and 1000BASE-LX differ

SX and LX identify different optical PHY options. SX is the short-wavelength choice commonly used with multimode fiber (MMF); LX uses longer-wavelength optics and is commonly used for longer spans, particularly over single-mode fiber (SMF). Specific transceivers can have additional supported fiber types and distance limits, so the labels alone are not enough to select a module.

Factor 1000BASE-SX 1000BASE-LX
Wavelength example Cisco’s overview specifies 850 nm for SX. The Fiber Optics Tech Consortium gives a 1270–1355 nm operating range for LX.
Typical fiber Multimode fiber. Single-mode is common; some transceivers also support multimode within specified limits.
Published reach examples Cisco specifies up to 550 m for its GLC-SX-MM on ordinary MMF. Its data sheet gives up to 550 m on legacy 50 μm MMF and up to 220 m on 62.5 μm FDDI-grade MMF. Cisco specifies up to 10 km on standard SMF and up to 550 m on MMF for its LX/LH SFP.
What to verify Module and host support, fiber type, connectors and the planned link distance. Module and host support, fiber type, connectors and the planned link distance; LX/LH branding does not guarantee a universal reach.

The distances in the table are specifications for the named Cisco products and stated fiber conditions, not universal limits for every SX or LX optic. Fiber grade, connectors, the full patching path and the link budget affect what a real installation supports. The consortium’s 1000BASE-SX guidance also gives planning ranges by fiber class and assumptions; its minimum stated distance is at least 500 m, not a blanket guarantee for every installation. See the Cisco Gigabit Ethernet SFP data sheet and Fiber Optics Tech Consortium’s 1000BASE-SX overview for their respective specifications and planning conditions.

What an SFP does

An SFP is a pluggable transceiver that connects a compatible Gigabit Ethernet port or slot to a fiber-optic network. Cisco describes its SFP as a hot-swappable input/output device. That does not mean every SFP fits or is supported in every switch or network card: host-device compatibility must be checked against the equipment manufacturer’s documentation.

How to choose a fiber Gigabit Ethernet module

  1. Check the host port. Find the exact switch, router or network-card model and confirm which Gigabit optical SFPs it supports. Compatibility for a specific device cannot be inferred from “SFP” alone.
  2. Identify the installed fiber. Determine whether the link uses multimode or single-mode fiber and, for multimode, identify its grade where available.
  3. Match both endpoints. Choose optics that are supported at each end and have compatible PHY, wavelength, fiber mode and connector requirements.
  4. Confirm the engineered reach. Compare the selected optic’s specifications with the complete link path and its link budget. Do not rely on the SX or LX label by itself as a distance guarantee.
  5. Install and verify according to the equipment documentation. Follow the host device’s instructions for inserting the transceiver and connecting fiber, then check link status at both ends.

Common selection mistakes

  • Assuming all optical Gigabit links have the same reach: published limits depend on the transceiver model and fiber conditions.
  • Choosing by distance alone: an optic must also match the fiber, connector and supported equipment.
  • Treating LX/LH as a universal standard for reach: the cited figures describe a particular Cisco module, not every product using similar labeling.
  • Assuming hot-swappable means universally compatible: physical fit and device support are separate questions.
