For power during an outage, a portable power station is usually the more direct choice. It stores energy and can run selected appliances from its own outlets. A typical plug-in, grid-tied solar microinverter is designed to supply power while the grid is operating; it shuts down when the grid fails. If you want both solar generation and outage power, look at a system with storage and a defined off-grid or backup mode—not just a “plug-and-play” label.
The right setup depends on what you need to run, for how long, and what your utility and local rules allow. The product figures below are manufacturers’ specifications, not independent test results.

How the options differ
| Option | Main job | What happens in an outage | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plug-in grid-tied solar | Use solar generation for current household demand and potentially reduce grid draw. | The reviewed APsystems EZ1 microinverter shuts down under anti-islanding protection. | Output, panel compatibility, export controls, and local interconnection rules. |
| Portable power station | Store energy and power selected appliances. | Can supply appliances through its own AC outlets; powering household circuits requires suitable separate equipment. | Battery capacity, continuous and surge output, ports, solar input, and any transfer equipment. |
| Integrated solar-storage or backup system | Combine solar input, battery storage, and backup functions. | Depends on the exact model’s off-grid output and backup design. | Off-grid output, capacity, PV input, expansion, installation requirements, and local availability. |
Why plug-in solar usually is not outage backup
A grid-tied microinverter is connected to a live utility grid. Under anti-islanding protection, the reviewed APsystems EZ1 shuts down when grid power is lost so it does not feed electricity onto utility lines. APsystems says the unit restarts after stable grid power returns. That behavior is specific to the described product; check the documentation for any other inverter rather than assuming all products work the same way.

What a portable power station can do
A power station stores energy in a battery and delivers it through its built-in outlets. That makes it a straightforward option for selected appliances, provided their power needs fit the station’s output and the stored energy lasts long enough. Solar panels can recharge a station only if their voltage, current, and connector are compatible with its solar input.
Size for both power and energy
- Capacity, measured in Wh or kWh, describes stored energy and helps estimate how long loads might run. Actual runtime depends on the appliances, their duty cycles, conversion losses, and operating conditions.
- Continuous output, measured in watts, limits the load the station can sustain. Check each appliance’s running demand.
- Surge output matters for equipment that briefly draws more power when starting, such as some motors. Compare the appliance’s startup demand with the station’s stated surge limit.
- Solar input and compatibility determine whether and how quickly panels can recharge the battery. Confirm the station’s voltage, current, connector, and input limits.
- Expansion can increase stored energy on supported systems, but it does not necessarily increase the power available at an outlet.
For example, Anker describes the SOLIX F3800 as providing 6,000 W output, 120/240 V output, and expansion up to 53.8 kWh with the system. It also describes solar connections and a separate Home Power Panel for home integration and automatic backup. These figures are manufacturer claims; they do not establish a particular runtime or whole-home capability for your loads. Anker says its grid-tied solar array will not charge the F3800 through the Home Power Panel while the grid is down. Anker SOLIX F3800

Using a power station with household circuits
A station’s AC outlets are not equivalent to a connection to house wiring. To power selected household circuits, use equipment designed for that purpose and confirmed as compatible with the exact station and installation. Anker’s F3800 example uses a separate Home Power Panel. Ask the utility, local authority, and a qualified electrician what equipment and installation are permitted where you live.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsNever feed power into house wiring through an ordinary wall outlet or use a “suicide cord.” A proper transfer or isolation arrangement is needed to prevent dangerous backfeeding. Do not connect a battery to household wiring unless the equipment and installation are designed for it.

When an integrated solar-and-storage system makes sense
If you want solar generation and outage capability together, compare systems that explicitly specify storage and off-grid output. A product’s “balcony solar,” “plug-and-play,” or similar name alone does not establish what it can power in an outage. Check whether the backup output is available during a grid failure, which loads it serves, and whether the system needs additional equipment or installation.
As one example, GoodWe states that its ESA-Athena has up to 1,500 W off-grid output, up to 2,400 W PV input, and expandable capacity up to 9.6 kWh. Those are manufacturer specifications; whether the system suits a home depends on the loads, configuration, and local requirements. GoodWe ESA-Athena

EcoFlow’s EU PowerStream page describes a setup combining panels, a grid-tied hybrid microinverter with up to 800 W solar input, a portable power station, and smart plugs. Named station examples on that page range from 1,024 Wh to 3,600 Wh. Those are product ratings, not runtime guarantees; verify how a particular configuration behaves during an outage. Check local rules and product availability
Grid connection, energy export, electrical work, and plug-in solar permissions vary by jurisdiction and utility. Renting or owning, building constraints, and local installation rules can also affect what is practical. For instance, EcoFlow’s US STREAM page says plug-and-play sales and installation are restricted to Utah under the cited state law. That statement concerns this product page and should not be generalized to other products or locations; confirm current local rules and availability. EcoFlow STREAM Ultra (US)

Choose based on the outage you need to cover
Choose a portable power station for selected appliances
This is generally the clearest fit if you want backup for a refrigerator, communications equipment, lights, or other chosen devices using the station’s own outlets. List each load, its running and startup demand, and the number of hours you want it available before choosing capacity and output.
Choose plug-in grid-tied solar for routine solar use
This can suit a goal of using solar energy while the grid is available, subject to local connection and export requirements. Do not count a typical grid-tied plug-in microinverter as outage power unless its documentation explicitly establishes an islanding or backup mode.
Choose integrated storage or a backed-up circuit system for both
If you want solar generation plus power during a grid outage—or want selected house circuits powered—look for a system with a specified backup path, compatible storage, and the required transfer or isolation equipment. Verify the exact model, installation, and permissions rather than inferring capability from the product category name.

- Which appliances or circuits must remain powered, and what are their running and startup loads?
- How long must they run, and can you recharge from solar during the outage?
- Do you need power only at the station’s outlets or at selected household circuits?
- What does your utility and local authority permit, and are you renting or subject to building restrictions?
- Does the exact product support your panels, battery expansion, and intended backup connection?
Without those details, no specific battery size, runtime, savings estimate, legal conclusion, or whole-home claim can be established. Check current manufacturer documentation and local requirements before committing to a configuration.
