How to Run a Quantized 27B Qwen Model Locally

A practical guide to running quantized Qwen3.5-27B locally, with vLLM commands, recipe-specific hardware targets, and a careful look at GGUF compatibility.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For the current model-specific setup, use Qwen3.5-27B with vLLM 0.17.0 or newer. The official vLLM recipe lists a single 24 GB GPU for its Int4 target, but that is a recipe-specific hardware target—not a guarantee that every quantized checkpoint will fit at every context length. First identify the exact model checkpoint and quantization, then confirm that your runtime supports them.

Identify the checkpoint and quantization first

“27B Qwen” is not a single model or file format. This guide focuses on the official vLLM recipe for Qwen3.5-27B, updated September 14, 2026. It describes a dense 27-billion-parameter multimodal model with vision and text input, a stated native 262,144-token context, and multi-token prediction support.

Before installing anything, settle these choices:

  • Model: the recipe covers Qwen3.5-27B; commands should not be assumed to apply unchanged to Qwen2 or other Qwen3 checkpoints.
  • Quantized checkpoint: the recipe links FP8 and GPTQ-Int4 variants. Confirm the repository name and format you intend to serve.
  • Runtime: the model-specific recipe uses vLLM. GGUF files and llama.cpp are a separate route and require their own compatibility check.
  • Workload: decide whether you need vision input and how much context you expect to use. A long context can increase runtime memory requirements.

Check the recipe’s hardware targets

The figures below are targets stated by the Qwen3.5-27B vLLM recipe, not universal minimums for all runtimes or workloads.

Model format Recipe-stated hardware target What to keep in mind
Int4 One 24 GB GPU This is the recipe’s hardware target; the cited example commands are for FP8 and BF16, not an Int4 launch command.
FP8 One 40 GB H100, H200, or L40S The recipe supplies a single-GPU FP8 serve command.
BF16 One H200, two H100s, or supported Intel Arc Pro configurations The recipe’s example uses tensor parallelism across two GPUs.

These specifications do not account for every setup’s context length, runtime overhead, other processes, or exact checkpoint. A 24 GB target should not be read as a promise that a particular consumer GPU will serve every request at the model’s full stated context. Plan with the intended workload and available memory in mind.

Run the model with vLLM

The official recipe specifies vLLM 0.17.0 or newer. Its installation example creates a virtual environment and installs vLLM with an automatically selected PyTorch backend:

  1. Create and activate an environment:
    uv venv
    source .venv/bin/activate
  2. Install vLLM:
uv pip install -U vllm --torch-backend=auto
  3. Start the FP8 checkpoint on one GPU:
    vllm serve Qwen/Qwen3.5-27B-FP8 --max-model-len 262144 --reasoning-parser qwen3

The 262,144 value in this example sets the maximum model length to the recipe’s stated native context. It is a configuration value, not a guarantee that the full context will fit alongside the model on every system.

Text-only option

If your workload does not use images, the recipe also provides the --language-model-only option to avoid loading the vision encoder. Consult the current Qwen3.5-27B recipe for the exact placement of the option and current command details.

Int4: confirm the launch path rather than borrowing another command

The recipe lists one 24 GB GPU as its Int4 target and links a GPTQ-Int4 checkpoint, but its cited serve examples are for FP8 and BF16. Do not treat either example as a verified Int4 command. Check the live recipe and the chosen checkpoint’s instructions for a compatible vLLM launch configuration.

Consider GGUF and llama.cpp only after checking compatibility

Qwen’s llama.cpp quantization documentation describes converting a compatible Hugging Face model to GGUF and then quantizing it with presets such as Q4_K_M or Q8_0 using llama-quantize. It also discusses AWQ-derived scales and calibration-based importance matrices. Lower-bit weights can reduce storage and memory needs, but the documentation warns that accuracy may decline, especially at lower bit widths.

The documentation’s worked conversion example is Qwen2-7B-Instruct. It explains a workflow; it does not establish that the same conversion commands work for Qwen3.5-27B. Before converting or serving a 27B model this way, verify that your current llama.cpp build and the exact checkpoint support one another. For Qwen3.5-27B, vLLM is the directly model-specific route covered by the current recipe.

Account for context and runtime memory

Quantization reduces the memory used by model weights, but weights are not the only runtime allocation. Context length, cache requirements, runtime overhead, and concurrent processes also matter when deciding whether a model fits. A setup that launches successfully with short prompts may not have enough headroom for long conversations or large inputs.

An older Qwen repository discusses KV-cache quantization, but its examples concern earlier model generations. Treat that as background, not as a Qwen3.5-27B instruction; use model- and runtime-specific documentation for cache settings.

Choose a route based on your exact setup

  • Use vLLM when you want the current Qwen3.5-27B-specific recipe. Match the checkpoint to the recipe’s FP8, BF16, or Int4 guidance and hardware target.
  • Use GGUF/llama.cpp only when the exact model and build are confirmed compatible. The Qwen documentation establishes the workflow with an older, smaller example, not this particular 27B model.
  • Choose context length and modality deliberately. Vision input requires the multimodal path; text-only use can avoid loading the vision encoder with the recipe’s language-model-only option.
  • Validate quality on your task. Lower-bit quantization can affect accuracy, and the impact depends on the quantization and workload.

There is no apples-to-apples speed or quality benchmark for these routes in the cited official setup material. Do not infer that one is categorically faster or better. The vLLM quantization documentation also cautions: “The compatibility chart is subject to change as vLLM continues to evolve and expand its support for different hardware platforms and quantization methods.” Check the vLLM quantization documentation along with the live model recipe when selecting hardware or formats.
