Yes, as a category, plug-in hybrids have recently reported more reliability problems than conventional hybrids and gasoline vehicles in U.S. studies. That is a warning about averages—not proof that every plug-in hybrid is unreliable or that a particular car will fail. The exact model year and powertrain matter more to a buyer than the label “PHEV” alone.
What the latest reliability studies found
J.D. Power’s 2026 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study reported 281 problems per 100 plug-in hybrid vehicles, the highest rate among the powertrain categories it compared. That figure was 39 problems per 100 vehicles higher than the PHEV result in its 2025 study. The study was fielded from December 2024 through November 2025. J.D. Power’s 2026 study

Consumer Reports’ analysis of 2023–2025 model years likewise found that the plug-in version of a given model tends to have worse reliability than its gas-only and/or conventional-hybrid counterpart. “Tends” matters: this is a pattern in its survey, not a claim about every plug-in model. These numbers are not failure probabilities
J.D. Power’s problems-per-100-vehicles metric counts reported problems under that study’s methodology; it does not mean that 281 out of 100 cars failed or predict the odds that an individual vehicle will break. Consumer Reports also does not treat every issue as equally serious: its reliability score gives greater weight to problems that could be serious or expensive. What the category finding does not prove
- It does not establish that all PHEVs are unreliable or that a specific current model will have problems.
- It does not identify the battery or electric drive as the source of every reported issue.
- It does not show that PHEVs necessarily cost more to repair or spend more time out of service; the cited studies do not provide a consistent cross-study repair-cost or downtime comparison.
Consumer Reports senior director of auto testing Jake Fisher attributed some problems with electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids to newer designs still having “kinks” to work out. That is Fisher’s interpretation of the survey findings, not an established cause for every reported problem.
Why the exact model and year matter
A category average can help frame a purchase, but it cannot substitute for a record on the particular vehicle. Compare the PHEV with the same model’s conventional-hybrid or gasoline version where available, and check reliability information for the precise model year. Consumer Reports’ finding is a tendency across its survey, not a best-to-worst ranking of every PHEV.

Safety investigations and recalls are separate from owner-reported reliability surveys. For example, in a September 6, 2024 information request, NHTSA said it had received 68 reports of loss of motive power in certain 2021–2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe vehicles. That number describes reports received at that time; an investigation is an inquiry into allegations, not a finding that all affected vehicles—or PHEVs generally—have the defect. A separate NHTSA notice on November 4, 2025 expanded a battery-fire-risk recall to 320,065 specified Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee PHEVs. The notice reported 19 battery-pack fires, including nine in vehicles that had received the earlier remedy software. These figures apply to that recall and its population, not to PHEVs as a whole. How to check a PHEV before buying or charging it
- Identify the exact vehicle. Record its model year, trim and powertrain; do not assume that a gas, conventional-hybrid and plug-in version share the same reliability record.
- Review model-specific reliability information. Look for results covering that model year and compare like with like. Note which publisher, study year, vehicle population and metric each ranking uses.
- For a used PHEV, examine service records and recall status. Check whether listed recall work was completed, and have the vehicle’s condition assessed as appropriate. The evidence here does not establish a universal battery-health threshold or a standard repair-cost estimate.
- Check the VIN for current recalls. Recall status and official directions can change. For a vehicle covered by the November 2025 Jeep notice, follow NHTSA’s instructions: park outside and do not charge it until the remedy is completed.
Should the category-level concern put you off?
It is a reason to scrutinize the model and year, not an automatic reason to reject every PHEV. The available U.S. evidence points to higher reported problem rates for PHEVs on average, while also showing why averages cannot answer whether a specific used or new vehicle is a sound choice. Make the decision using model-specific reliability information, the vehicle’s records and its current VIN-specific recall status.
