What does “plug and pray” mean?
It changes “play” to “pray” to mock the uncertainty of connecting a device that is supposed to work automatically. Instead, the computer might not recognize it, or getting it to work might take troubleshooting.

The phrase describes frustration with unreliable automatic setup—not a distinct kind of device or a formal feature. The Jargon File uses it for a PC peripheral card advertised as needing no hardware setup but still capable of failing to work reliably (The Jargon File).

Why was plug-and-play called “plug and pray”?
In the early PC setup process, users might adjust jumpers or DIP switches, restart the computer, and try drivers or configuration options until hardware worked. Plug-and-play initiatives aimed to reduce that effort by automating configuration and resource allocation, as Dan Strassberg explained in a March 2, 1995 article for EDN.

Automatic setup could still go wrong. Sound On Sound’s discussion of Windows 95 identifies bad drivers as one possible reason configuration failed (Sound On Sound). The joke captured the gap between the promise of easy installation and the reality of hardware, resource, or software problems.
When did the phrase originate?
The sources associate the expression with PC hardware setup in the Windows 95 period, but they do not identify a specific person who coined it or establish its earliest recorded use. Strassberg attributed it generally to “industry wags” and noted that Intel marketers used the more optimistic phrase “plug and hope.”

FOLDOC also describes “plug and pray” as a Windows 95-era hardware-installation joke (FOLDOC). These historical references explain the phrase’s context; they do not show that modern plug-and-play devices are generally unreliable.
What did the phrase refer to in practice?
- Manual hardware configuration: Users could have to set jumpers or DIP switches rather than rely on automatic setup.
- Resource conflicts: Devices needed system resources to be allocated correctly, a process plug-and-play initiatives sought to automate.
- Drivers and software: Even when hardware was connected, configuration could fail because of driver or other software problems.
In a 1995 EDN article, Strassberg wrote that users might have to forsake “150 million legacy boards” as plug-and-play initiatives advanced. That was a figure reported in the article at the time, not a current count or an independently verified total.
