Choose Plex if you want account-based remote access and are comfortable with its pass requirements; choose Jellyfin if avoiding software fees and keeping your media server self-hosted matter more, and you are willing to configure secure remote access yourself. The key difference is not simply which app streams better: since April 29, 2025, remote playback of personal video on Plex apps covered by its updated rules requires a qualifying pass. Jellyfin has no software-use fee, but remote access depends on how you configure your network.
How remote streaming works
These services handle access to your own media differently. Plex provides a more account-centered route, while Jellyfin is self-hosted: the server owner must arrange a way for remote devices to reach it.

Plex: affected apps require a qualifying pass for remote personal video
Plex says its remote-playback requirements began on April 29, 2025. The rule applies to apps updated to Plex’s new experience. Its current support article lists Android and iOS mobile apps, PlayStation, Plex desktop apps, Roku, supported smart TVs, web, and Xbox; Plex says other platforms may be added. Check the current rule for the app you use at Plex’s remote playback requirements.

- The server administrator has Plex Pass.
- The viewer has Plex Pass.
- The viewer has Remote Watch Pass.
A server owner’s Plex Pass can let other accounts with access to that server stream remotely. Remote Watch Pass is tied to the subscribing account, with an exception for managed accounts in Plex Home. It does not provide the other premium features bundled with Plex Pass. See Plex’s Remote Watch Pass overview and Plex’s Plex Pass overview for the current terms.
The requirement concerns personal video, not every kind of Plex media or Plex’s separate ad-supported streaming catalog. Plex says local playback of personal video is free. Basic personal music streaming through Plexamp and photo viewing through Plex Photos have different rules and are identified as free in its Free vs. Paid guide.
Jellyfin: remote access requires an owner-managed network route
Jellyfin is not a hosted service that automatically makes your home library reachable from elsewhere. Its networking documentation says the server is entirely self-hosted and the owner must manually expose it to the internet or provide another route into the network. Documented approaches include a reverse proxy, VPN access, or a VPS reverse proxy. Jellyfin also documents port forwarding, but warns: “Opening a port directly to the Internet is therefore insecure and not recommended.” Follow the current Jellyfin networking guide rather than treating a direct port opening as a safe default.

Network design is part of the decision. Jellyfin’s guide covers firewall and proxy configuration, local-network settings, and controls for whether all users or individual users may access the server externally. A VPN can keep access limited to connected devices; a reverse proxy can provide a controlled public route, but needs correct configuration. Either way, the server owner is responsible for the setup and its security.
What each option costs
Jellyfin’s server software and official clients are free, with no software usage fee, including for friends or company use, according to the Jellyfin project. That does not make a home media setup costless: the owner supplies the server, storage, electricity, broadband, and any optional hosting or networking services.
Plex’s server and local playback of personal video are free. On affected apps, remote personal-video playback requires Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass under the qualifying paths above. Remote Watch Pass provides remote streaming for the associated account; Plex Pass includes remote streaming and additional benefits. Plex lists examples such as hardware-accelerated streaming or transcoding, DVR recording with a compatible tuner and antenna, credits and intro skipping, and extra music features.

No universal current Plex price is established here. Prices and offers may vary by country and purchase channel, so check the price shown in your Plex account or purchase flow before comparing totals. For a household decision, count who needs remote video access, whether the server owner already has Plex Pass, and whether the other Plex Pass features are useful. For Jellyfin, include the host’s ongoing costs and the time required to configure and maintain remote access.

Jellyfin’s project website states: “Jellyfin has no tracking, phone-home, or central servers collecting your data.” That describes the project’s stated approach; it is not an independent security audit. Self-hosting gives the owner control over the server and its network exposure, and also makes the owner responsible for securing both.
Plex’s privacy policy PDF published in June 2024 makes a narrower statement about its Relay service: “The data transferred via the Plex Relay Service is not stored by Plex except for the temporary buffering of data required to provide you with an optimal streaming experience.” The policy also describes metadata processing for certain account synchronization, metadata matching, and integrated third-party control or playback functions. The Relay statement is specific to that service and policy date; it does not establish how every Plex service handles data. Consult Plex’s privacy policy and its current policy for broader data-handling details.
Which one fits your setup?
| Priority | Better fit | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Less network administration for remote viewing | Plex | Remote access still has to be enabled, and affected apps require a qualifying pass for personal video. |
| No software fee for the server and clients | Jellyfin | Hardware, power, broadband, and optional network services still have costs. |
| Several people sharing one remote library | Depends on the arrangement | A server owner’s Plex Pass can cover remote access for accounts using that server; Remote Watch Pass applies to its subscriber, subject to the Plex Home managed-account exception. Jellyfin avoids a software fee but needs owner-configured access. |
| Self-hosted operation and the project’s stated no-tracking approach | Jellyfin | The privacy claim is Jellyfin’s own, not an independent audit; network security remains the owner’s responsibility. |
| Additional premium media features | Plex Pass | Consider whether its listed benefits, such as DVR or hardware-accelerated transcoding, matter for your devices and server. |
Device compatibility can change the practical answer. Plex’s remote-playback rules are being applied by platform, so verify the specific app and its current behavior. Jellyfin offers official and third-party clients; check that the client you intend to use is available and maintained for your device, and works with your server version.
Quick Recap
A practical way to decide
- List who will watch remotely. For Plex, identify whether the server owner has Plex Pass or whether each viewer would need their own qualifying pass.
- Check the actual client devices. Confirm the relevant Plex app is covered by the remote-playback requirement, or that a suitable Jellyfin client exists for each device.
- Choose your network responsibility level. With Jellyfin, decide who will maintain a VPN or reverse-proxy setup and manage external access. Do not treat direct internet port forwarding as the recommended route.
- Compare full costs. Check Plex’s current regional purchase options and include Jellyfin’s server, storage, power, and optional networking costs.
- Set privacy expectations accurately. Jellyfin’s project makes a clear no-tracking claim; Plex’s June 2024 Relay statement addresses Relay specifically. Neither statement alone answers every possible question about all data handling.
