If you want to host your own movies, shows, music, photos, or home videos, start by evaluating Jellyfin if open-source self-hosting is your priority. Emby is another option, with some server features and app capabilities tied to paid plans or app-specific unlocks. Neither is a universal best: the right fit depends on the devices you use, the media formats you have, whether you need remote access, and how much server work transcoding requires.
Which Plex alternative should you look at first?
Jellyfin for an open-source self-hosted library
Jellyfin describes itself as an alternative to proprietary Emby and Plex: you run a server that delivers your media to end-user devices. Its open-source, community-developed approach makes it the clearest first option to investigate if you want to host your own library without choosing a proprietary server. Jellyfin maintains a client list and documents hardware acceleration, but the actual experience depends on the client, host platform, hardware, and setup.

Emby for a server with a mixed free-and-paid feature set
Emby organizes and streams a personal library from a home computer or NAS. Its documentation says you can access the server over the internet with proper network configuration. Emby is software for serving your own media, not a source of movies or TV shows: its Quick Start guide states, “Emby is NOT a media streaming service. We do not provide access to movies or TV shows.” Its feature matrix distinguishes free features, Premiere features, and app-specific behavior, so check the particular capability and client you plan to use rather than assuming all playback requires payment—or that everything is free.
Compare the alternatives against your setup
| Decision point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Software preference | Choose Jellyfin as the first evaluation if open-source self-hosting is a priority. Consider Emby if its product and feature model suit you. |
| Cost of needed features | Check Emby’s current feature matrix and the unlock requirements for each app you use. The matrix lists hardware-accelerated transcoding, Live TV and DVR, HDR tone mapping while transcoding, and downloads or sync among Premiere features; some app playback scenarios vary by client. |
| Client support | List every TV, phone, streaming box, and computer you expect to use. Check the chosen project’s current client list, then confirm that each device supports the codecs and playback features your files need. |
| Formats, subtitles, and bandwidth | Consider whether your clients can play your files directly and whether your network can carry the selected bitrate. A format or subtitle incompatibility, or a bitrate limit, can require conversion on the server. |
| Server capacity | If conversion is likely, check whether your exact operating system, hardware, drivers, and configuration support hardware acceleration in the server you choose. |
| Remote viewing | Read the current remote-access instructions for the chosen project and account for the network configuration it requires. Emby specifically notes that internet access requires proper network configuration. |
Understand direct playback and transcoding before upgrading hardware
Direct playback means the client can use the media file in a compatible format without the server converting it. Transcoding is a conversion the server performs when the client cannot play a file natively or a bitrate limit makes the original stream unsuitable. It increases server workload, so checking your files and clients can be more useful than immediately buying a faster server.

For Jellyfin, the client reports capabilities such as codecs, resolution, bitrate, and constraints; the server selects output based on those capabilities and its own limits. Jellyfin’s transcoding documentation notes that an unsupported video codec results in video transcoding. Emby’s documentation likewise describes transcoding as a response to client incompatibility or bitrate limits.
Check subtitles as well as the video format
Subtitle handling can change whether a file plays directly. Emby notes that graphical subtitles can trigger transcoding more often than text subtitles. If playback unexpectedly loads the server, check the file’s video and audio formats, the subtitle type, the client’s support, and the stream bitrate before concluding that the server hardware is inadequate.

- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Verify acceleration for the exact host
Jellyfin documents hardware-acceleration support involving Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Apple, and Rockchip hardware, but that does not mean any device with one of those brand names will work automatically. Support depends on the hardware, operating system, drivers, and configuration. Emby’s feature matrix lists hardware-accelerated transcoding as a Premiere feature. Confirm compatibility and feature access for your intended setup before choosing hardware or a paid plan.
Check clients and remote access before committing
A server’s client availability is part of the decision, not an afterthought. Start with the devices people in your household actually use, then check the current client listings and codec support for your candidate server. A server may be available on a device while a particular file still requires transcoding because of that client’s format or subtitle limitations.

Remote access also depends on more than choosing a server. Emby says access over the internet requires proper network configuration. The available product information does not establish a like-for-like current comparison of remote-access setup across Jellyfin, Emby, and Plex, so consult the current instructions for the server you choose instead of assuming access away from home will be turnkey.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need to buy a NAS or more storage?
No new NAS drive is required just to switch media-server software. If your current storage has enough room for your collection, you can evaluate another server using the equipment you already have. Consider a NAS hard drive only if you need more capacity or want to expand your storage; storage purchases do not resolve client incompatibility or transcoding demands by themselves.
