Yes, Plex sharing can be reasonably safe when you secure your account, share only the libraries each person needs, and understand what remote access exposes. It is not risk-free: enabling Remote Access makes your server reachable from outside your home network. If nobody needs to watch away from home, leaving Remote Access disabled avoids that external access path.
What Plex sharing makes accessible
Plex lets you invite someone’s Plex account and choose which server libraries they can use. That is safer than treating an invitation as an all-or-nothing share: give each person access only to the content they need. Plex describes library sharing as intended for family and close personal friends. Plex’s library-sharing guide explains how to manage those invitations and permissions.

There are two distinct situations:
- Local-only access: viewers use Plex on the same local network. The server does not need to be reachable from the internet for this.
- Remote access: viewers can connect from outside the home. The server must be online, and Plex Remote Access must be configured successfully.
Remote access is convenient, but it creates an internet-facing route to your server. Plex’s setup can use router-assisted UPnP or NAT-PMP, or manual port forwarding; the documented manual setup forwards the selected external port to internal port 32400. Port forwarding routes network traffic—it is not encryption or authentication. See Plex’s Remote Access instructions.
Secure the account that controls the server
Use a unique password and enable two-factor authentication
Use a strong Plex password that you do not reuse elsewhere, or protect the identity-provider account if you sign in through a linked provider. Plex supports time-based one-time password (TOTP) codes from authenticator apps. During setup, it provides 10 single-use recovery codes; keep them somewhere separate from your authenticator device. Plex does not support SMS verification codes for this feature. If your account was created through Apple or Google, Plex says you may need to set a separate Plex password and verify your email before enabling 2FA. Follow Plex’s two-factor authentication instructions.

- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Plex’s guidance also says switching between Plex Home members does not trigger another 2FA prompt. Keep Plex Home membership limited to people you trust with that level of access.
Keep the server software current
Install Plex Media Server updates as they become available, and use official Plex apps signed in to each viewer’s own account where practical. Avoid weakening account protections to make access easier.
Invite people and grant only the libraries they need
- In Plex’s sharing controls, invite the person using their Plex account.
- Select only the libraries they should be able to view, rather than sharing the whole server by default.
- Review the share when a person’s needs change and remove access when it is no longer appropriate.
Plex Pass can add controls such as content ratings, labels, and permission to download. These controls help narrow access further, but a share should still be limited to trusted accounts.

Choose a secure-connection setting with compatibility in mind
Plex’s default Secure Connections setting is Preferred. Supported clients use secure connections when possible, but Preferred can allow a regular HTTP connection if a secure one is unavailable. Required rejects connections that cannot be secured, which can stop older or unsupported clients from connecting. For most people, keeping Preferred is the practical balance; choose Required only if you understand that compatibility trade-off. Plex also says most users have no reason to enable strict TLS, which may prevent older clients from connecting.
Plex documents exceptions to secure requests and streaming, including some casting and manually configured connections. The setting is useful, but it is not a guarantee that every connection path is protected. Details are in Plex’s secure-server-connections guide.
Do not allow unauthenticated connections casually
Plex warns that an app connecting without signing in, when allowed by the network settings, is treated as the server owner. As Plex puts it: “Any app connecting to the server this way without being signed in will be treated as the admin/owner.” That can expose all libraries and server settings, so do not add broad local-network or internet address ranges to the list allowed without authorization just for convenience. See Plex’s Network settings documentation.

Know what Plex’s 2025 security notice did—and did not—say
In a September 8, 2025 notice, Plex said an unauthorized third party accessed a limited subset of customer data from one database. Plex reported that the accessed information included email addresses, usernames, securely hashed passwords, and authentication data; it said it did not store credit-card data on its servers. Plex asked password users to reset their passwords and recommended signing out connected devices; for single sign-on users, it asked them to sign out of all active sessions. It also recommended enabling 2FA.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Remote playback eligibility is separate from security
Having a secure share does not necessarily mean remote playback is included at no cost. Plex’s support page says that, since April 29, 2025, affected updated apps require one of these for remote personal-video playback: Plex Pass on the server admin account, Plex Pass on the viewer’s account, or a Remote Watch Pass on the viewer’s account. The server owner’s Plex Pass can allow other accounts using that server to stream remotely without each viewer having a separate subscription. Plex says those video restrictions do not apply to music streaming with Plexamp or photo streaming with Plex Photos. Consult Plex’s current remote-playback requirements for the applicable details.

In a March 11, 2026 announcement, Plex said the requirement would begin on March 23, 2026, for supported smart TVs—including Samsung, LG, and Vizio—and PlayStation and Xbox. The announcement said local streaming would remain free and remote music and photo libraries would be unaffected. Rollout and requirements can depend on the platform, so check the current rules for the app you use. This is an access and subscription condition, not a security setting. See Plex’s March 11, 2026 announcement.
Choose local-only or remote sharing based on need
If everyone watches at home, leaving Remote Access off reduces the ways the server can be reached from outside the local network. If trusted people need to watch elsewhere, Plex Remote Access is the straightforward option, provided you accept the added exposure and configure the account, shares, and connection settings carefully.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A VPN-based setup is another possible route for people comfortable managing VPN access, but Plex’s documentation does not establish a blanket security ranking between VPN access and its standard account-based remote access. A VPN also adds setup and access-management work, especially if friends need to connect. Do not treat a VPN as mandatory or as a substitute for secure accounts and limited permissions.
For network reliability, Plex generally favors wired Ethernet over Wi-Fi; that may help a server or playback device with an unstable connection, but it does not secure remote sharing. See Plex’s internet and network requirements.
Quick Recap
Safer Plex-sharing checklist
- Use a unique Plex password or secure the linked identity-provider account.
- Enable TOTP-based 2FA and store recovery codes separately.
- Invite individual Plex accounts and select only the libraries each person needs.
- Keep Plex Home membership limited to people you trust.
- Leave Secure Connections at Preferred unless you need stricter enforcement and have checked client compatibility.
- Do not allow broad unauthenticated network ranges.
- Keep Plex Media Server updated.
- Disable Remote Access if off-site viewing is unnecessary.
- Check the current remote-playback requirements for your client platform; they are separate from security.
