Please Stop Using Small AIO Liquid Coolers in Most PC Builds

A small AIO is not automatically better because it uses liquid. Learn when a 120 mm cooler makes sense, what radiator sizes mean, and how to check fit.

For most desktop PC builds, a 120 mm all-in-one (AIO) liquid cooler should not be the default CPU cooler. Its cooling capacity is limited, and an air cooler can be a better or less expensive fit. A small AIO still makes sense when a compact case cannot accommodate an air cooler or the build layout leaves few alternatives.

Why a 120 mm AIO is usually the wrong default

AIO means the pump, tubing, and radiator arrive as a sealed cooling unit. That does not make a small radiator automatically superior to a heatsink and fan: a single-fan 120 mm radiator has limited cooling capacity, while an air cooler may offer better value for the same build. PCWorld advises against 120 mm and 140 mm liquid coolers for most purposes, while identifying mini PCs without room for air cooling as an exception. PCWorld’s AIO guide

The practical question is not whether liquid cooling is better in the abstract. It is whether a particular cooler suits your CPU’s workload, your case, and your priorities. A small AIO can be a deliberate compromise when a tower cooler will not fit; it is rarely a reason to choose liquid cooling by itself.

Should you get an AIO or an air cooler?

Compare the actual constraints of your build. A tower air cooler avoids pump and radiator installation, but its height must fit the case. An AIO can be useful when CPU-cooler height is restricted or when sustained CPU workloads make its cooling capacity attractive, but radiator fit, tube reach, and pump placement become part of the installation.

  • CONTACT FRAME FOR INTEL LGA1851 | LGA1700: Optimized contact pressure distribution for longer CPU life and better heat dissipation
  • ARCTIC's P12 PRO FAN: More power at any speed - more powerful and quieter than the P12, especially at low speeds. Higher maximum speed for optimal cooling performance under high load
  • NATIVE OFFSET MOUNTING FOR INTEL AND AMD: Shifting the cold plate center towards the CPU hotspot ensures more efficient heat transfer
  • INTEGRATED VRM FAN: PWM-controlled fan that lowers the temperature of the voltage converters and thus ensures reliable performance
  • INTEGRATED CABLE MANAGEMENT: The PWM cables of the radiator fans are integrated in the sheathing of the hoses so that only a single visible cable is connected to the motherboard

Case fit Check the cooler’s height against the case’s CPU-cooler limit. Check radiator support at the intended mount, radiator length and thickness with fans, and tube reach.
Installation Fits at the CPU socket; no radiator or pump to position. Requires mounting the pump and radiator; orientation can affect pump performance and noise, according to CORSAIR.
Noise Depends on the cooler and fan. Depends on the fans, pump, speed, and model. A larger radiator may allow slower fan speeds for a given heat load, but is not guaranteed to be quieter.
Other checks Confirm motherboard socket support and memory clearance. Confirm motherboard socket support, memory and motherboard clearance, and that the pump sits below the radiator’s highest point.

NZXT’s guide summarizes the choice this way: “Both cool CPUs well.” That is a general comparison, not a guarantee that any two specific models perform equally. There is no controlled comparison here of a named AIO and air cooler on your particular CPU, so choose by verified specifications and the demands of your own build. What radiator size labels actually tell you

A radiator’s size class describes its fan layout, not a guaranteed temperature or noise level. NZXT gives these nominal fan-area figures in its October 1, 2026 guide; they are area comparisons, not measured thermal results.

  • RS120 ARGB Fans: RS ARGB fans create strong airflow and high static pressure, with easy ARGB control via a compatible motherboard. CORSAIR AirGuide technology and Magnetic Dome bearings ensure great cooling performance and low noise
  • Easy Daisy-Chained Connections: Reduce the wiring in your system by daisy-chaining your RS ARGB fans and connecting them to just one 4-pin PWM fan header and one +5V ARGB header
Radiator class Fan layout Nominal fan area (NZXT, 2026)
240 mm Two 120 mm fans 28,800 mm²
280 mm Two 140 mm fans 39,200 mm²
360 mm Three 120 mm fans 43,200 mm²

By nominal fan area, NZXT says a 280 mm layout comes close to a 360 mm layout while using one fewer fan. That alone does not establish which radiator will cool a particular CPU better: radiator design, fans, pump, case airflow, and CPU load all matter. Moving from a 120 mm to a larger radiator can increase the available cooling capacity, but it does not make an AIO the right choice if an air cooler fits and better meets your needs.

Is a 240 mm AIO enough for gaming?

“Enough” depends on the CPU, game workload, case airflow, and the specific cooler. A 240 mm AIO uses two 120 mm fans and is a different size class from a one-fan 120 mm radiator, but the label alone cannot promise a particular temperature or noise level. CORSAIR describes 240 mm or 280 mm radiators as sufficient for casual use; that is manufacturer guidance, not a universal test result. Check fit before buying or installing

Start with the case manual and the specifications for the exact cooler. A radiator may be supported in one case location but not another, and a nominal radiator size does not tell you whether the full radiator-and-fan assembly will clear nearby components.

  1. Identify the parts and workload. Note your CPU, its typical workload, case model, motherboard socket, and memory height.
  2. Choose the mounting location. Confirm the case supports a radiator at that specific front, top, or side position.
  3. Check the full assembly. Verify actual radiator length and radiator-plus-fan thickness, then check for motherboard and memory clearance.
  4. Check the tubing and socket. Make sure the tubes reach the chosen mount without strain and that the cooler supports your CPU socket.
  5. Compare the air-cooler alternative. If considering a tower cooler, check its height against the case limit and confirm socket support and memory clearance.
  6. Position the pump correctly. Keep it below the radiator’s highest point so air collects in the radiator rather than the pump.

Choose a radiator position that suits the whole system

NZXT describes both top-exhaust and front- or side-intake layouts as viable, with different effects on CPU and GPU airflow. Front or side intake sends cooler outside air through the radiator but can warm air reaching the graphics card. Top exhaust sends CPU heat directly out of the case. Either can work if the rest of the case airflow stays balanced; the case layout and component temperatures should guide the choice.

Orientation also matters to the pump. CORSAIR notes that AIO orientation can affect pump performance and noise, while NZXT’s guidance is to keep the pump below the radiator’s highest point. Follow the cooler maker’s installation instructions for the specific model rather than assuming every orientation is equivalent.

When a small AIO is a reasonable choice

  • A compact case rules out air cooling: PCWorld names a mini PC with insufficient room for an air cooler as an exception to its general advice against small liquid coolers.
  • The layout leaves few workable options: A 120 mm AIO may be a fit-driven choice where a tower cooler cannot be installed.
  • You have verified the complete fit: The case supports the radiator at the intended location, the assembly clears surrounding parts, the tubes reach, and the socket is supported.

If a tower air cooler fits, compare specific models on workload suitability, clearance, noise, installation, and cost rather than choosing a small AIO simply because it uses liquid. If you do need an AIO, select the size your case supports and your CPU workload warrants; a 240 mm model is a conditional alternative, not the automatic answer for every build.
