Playwright vs Puppeteer for Scheduled Website Screenshots

Both libraries capture screenshots; your scheduler runs them. Choose Playwright for broader browser coverage and built-in baseline comparisons, or Puppeteer when its documented capture workflow fits your browser needs.

Both Playwright and Puppeteer can capture page and element screenshots; neither decides when a capture runs. Choose Playwright if you need Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit support or Playwright Test’s built-in screenshot-baseline comparisons. Choose Puppeteer if its documented page and element capture fits your browser needs. For recurring captures, run either script from CI or another scheduler and keep the capture environment consistent.

What each tool does—and what the scheduler does

Playwright and Puppeteer automate browsers and can save screenshots. Scheduling is a separate concern: a CI workflow, cron job, or other scheduler launches your capture script. The libraries do not, by themselves, provide a guarantee that a job will start at an exact time.

For repeatable comparisons, treat the browser and capture setup as part of the output. Record the library and browser versions, operating environment, viewport, and screenshot options with each run. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with the host OS, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Its guidance is to generate and compare screenshots in the same environment. See Playwright’s screenshot comparison documentation.

Playwright vs Puppeteer: which fits scheduled captures?

Need Playwright Puppeteer
Save a page screenshot page.screenshot() supports saving to a file, and can return screenshot bytes. Full-page capture is documented. page.screenshot() can save a page screenshot to a file.
Capture one element Locator screenshots are documented. ElementHandle.screenshot() is documented.
Browser coverage Playwright’s migration guide documents Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit launch examples. Playwright’s migration guide says Puppeteer does not support WebKit. Confirm your intended browser setup against the current Puppeteer documentation.
Screenshot baseline comparison Playwright Test can generate screenshot baselines and compare later runs. The Puppeteer screenshot source cited here documents capture, not a corresponding baseline-comparison workflow. This is not evidence that comparison workflows cannot be built with Puppeteer.
Recurring execution Pair the script with CI or another scheduler. Playwright documents CI setup and containers for consistent environments, not a schedule guarantee. Pair the script with CI or another scheduler. Scheduling depends on that external system.

Choose Playwright when browser coverage or its integrated visual-regression workflow matters. Choose Puppeteer when its screenshot API and browser setup are sufficient for the job. The available documentation does not establish that one is faster or more reliable for scheduled screenshots.

Capture a screenshot with Playwright

Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in the project, then save a screenshot with a small script. The command below uses the package’s documented browser installation flow:

  1. npm init -y
  2. npm install -D playwright
  3. npx playwright install chromium

Create screenshot.mjs:

import { chromium } from 'playwright';

const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });

try {
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Run it with node screenshot.mjs. For an element capture, wait for the target and use its locator:

const card = page.locator('.product-card').first();
await card.waitFor();
await card.screenshot({ path: 'product-card.png' });

Playwright also supports returning screenshot bytes instead of writing a file, which is useful when the script uploads the image to storage or passes it to another component. See the official Playwright screenshot guide. To use Firefox or WebKit, install the corresponding browser and launch it through Playwright; consult the browser documentation for the current installation instructions.

Capture a screenshot with Puppeteer

Install Puppeteer, which includes its browser setup, then create screenshot.mjs:

npm init -y
npm install puppeteer
import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });

try {
  const page = await browser.newPage();
  await page.setViewport({ width: 1440, height: 900 });
  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
  await browser.close();
}

Run node screenshot.mjs. For an element, select it and capture its handle:

const element = await page.$('.product-card');
if (!element) throw new Error('Product card not found');
await element.screenshot({ path: 'product-card.png' });

Check the current Puppeteer screenshot guide for supported screenshot options and configuration guidance for the environment where the script will run.

Make the capture recurring

Once the script works locally, configure your CI system or scheduler to install dependencies and run it. The exact schedule syntax and timing guarantees depend on that system; do not assume a scheduled trigger means the screenshot begins at an exact minute.

  1. Pin the runtime, library, and browser versions used to establish the capture or visual baseline.
  2. Set the viewport and capture options explicitly so changes are intentional.
  3. Make the script return a failing exit status when navigation or capture fails, so the scheduler can report the job as failed.
  4. Save screenshots and run metadata together. For visual comparisons, keep the baseline and later runs on the same operating system, browser version, and relevant rendering settings.
  5. Use the CI provider’s own documentation for its schedule configuration, retries, artifact retention, and timing behavior.

Playwright’s CI guide documents CI setup and containers that can help keep the execution environment consistent. It does not promise a particular schedule cadence or exact start time.

Use Playwright Test for visual baselines

If the recurring job should detect visual changes rather than merely save images, Playwright Test can compare screenshots against baselines. The first run creates a reference; later runs compare against it. The documentation says the workflow takes captures until two consecutive screenshots match and saves the last capture as the baseline. Name snapshots to keep them identifiable, and update them deliberately with --update-snapshots when a visual change is accepted.

Run the baseline workflow in the same environment as later comparisons. An OS, browser, headless-mode, or hardware difference can change rendering without a page change, creating noisy diffs. For setup and configuration, use the snapshot documentation.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-request capture, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its clean-capture options remove supported cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents.

Example cURL request (replace the URL and provide your API key):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options and response details. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Troubleshoot scheduled captures

  • The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Check that navigation reached the expected page and that the chosen wait condition suits the site. A page can continue making requests after its main content appears, or remain active due to analytics and other network traffic; use an explicit selector or a bounded wait when appropriate.
  • An element screenshot fails: Verify the selector matches an element on the loaded page, and wait for it to appear before capture. Dynamic content may require waiting for a more specific readiness condition.
  • Images or layout differ between runs: Compare browser/library versions, OS, viewport, headless setting, and other environment details against the baseline. Keep them aligned before treating the difference as a page regression.
  • The job works locally but not in CI: Confirm the browser is installed in the job environment, dependencies are available, and the CI runtime has the permissions and resources required to launch it. Use the relevant tool’s CI guidance and the provider’s logs to locate the failure.
  • The schedule runs late or appears to be skipped: Inspect the scheduler’s own run history and timing rules. Playwright and Puppeteer execute the script; they do not control when an external scheduler dispatches it.
