Playwright Test Agents: Set Up and Choose the Right Workflow

Playwright Test Agents turn described application flows into reviewed plans and tests. See how they differ from MCP, CLI, and Codegen.

Playwright’s Test Agents help turn an application flow into a reviewed test plan and executable Playwright tests. The workflow has three roles—planner, generator, and healer—but it does not remove the need for a developer or QA engineer to check the plan, assertions, and any proposed repairs. For a different task, Playwright MCP lets an LLM operate a browser through tool calls, while Codegen records a person’s browser actions as a starting point for test code.

What Playwright Test Agents do

Playwright Test Agents are a workflow for exploring an application, drafting test coverage, creating Playwright Test files, and responding to failures. Playwright introduced them in version 1.56, according to its v1.56 release notes. The current documentation describes three roles that can be used independently, sequentially, or chained together.

Agent Role What to review
Planner Explores the application and writes a human-readable Markdown test plan. Confirm the scenarios reflect intended behavior and include meaningful edge cases.
Generator Turns the plan into executable Playwright tests, checking selectors and assertions while replaying scenarios. Inspect locators, assertions, setup assumptions, and whether the tests actually verify requirements.
Healer Replays failed steps, inspects the live UI, and may suggest changes such as locator or wait updates before rerunning. Decide whether a proposed change fixes test brittleness or conceals a product defect. Guardrails can halt the process, and the healer can judge a feature broken and skip a test.

The sequence is not a guarantee of passing tests or complete coverage. In particular, a skipped test is not evidence that the feature works; review the failure and the healer’s reasoning.

Set up the native Test Agents

The agents are generated into a project as client-specific definitions. Playwright’s Test Agents documentation shows this example for Codex:

npx playwright init-agents --loop=codex

The documentation also gives examples for VS Code, Claude Code, and OpenCode. Choose the client option that matches the coding-agent setup you actually use, and check the current documentation for supported options and exact command syntax. The page is under Playwright’s next documentation, so details may change.

  1. Generate the agent definitions. Run the documented initialization command from your project and choose the appropriate client or loop option.
  2. Give the planner application setup context. Supply a seed test that can initialize the application under test. It can show how the project handles initialization, dependencies, fixtures, and hooks.
  3. Describe the scenario. Ask for a clear flow, such as Generate a plan for guest checkout. A product requirements document is optional, but can add useful product context.
  4. Review the Markdown plan. Correct missing steps, unsupported assumptions, and scenarios that do not match the intended behavior before asking the generator to implement it.
  5. Generate and inspect tests. Have the generator turn the approved plan into tests, then review the code and its replay results before relying on it in a suite.
  6. Use the healer selectively. For a failure, inspect the proposed repair and rerun outcome. Do not accept a passing result if the change weakened an assertion or bypassed a real defect.

The generated definitions are static files. Playwright advises regenerating them when Playwright is updated so they incorporate the newer tools and instructions.

Choose the workflow that matches the task

Test Agents, MCP, CLI, and Codegen address different parts of browser testing. They can complement one another; they are not a single interchangeable feature.

Option Best fit How it works Key consideration
Test Agents Developing coverage from a described flow, with a plan and generated Playwright tests. Generated agent definitions coordinate planner, generator, and healer roles in a project. Human review remains essential, especially for generated assertions and repairs.
Playwright MCP Exploratory browser interaction or a specialized agent loop that needs browser operations. An LLM calls MCP tools with structured parameters; the server exposes browser operations and accessibility snapshots. Requires an MCP client and deliberate configuration of capabilities and trust.
Playwright CLI Coding-agent work that needs shell commands and broader repository context. The agent runs commands in a shell rather than calling MCP browser tools. It is a different operating model from MCP; consult the current comparison for version-sensitive implementation details.
Codegen Recording a known flow that a person can perform in the browser. Records browser actions and produces test code as a starting point. Generated code should be inspected and improved rather than treated as finished coverage.

Playwright’s MCP versus CLI comparison frames MCP as tool-call-based and oriented toward specialized agentic loops and exploration, while CLI is positioned for coding agents working in larger codebases. This distinction is more useful than treating one as universally better: pick the interface that fits the agent’s work and the repository context it needs.

Use MCP for browser operations through an LLM

The Playwright MCP documentation describes browser automation through the Model Context Protocol. The server presents structured accessibility snapshots and tools an LLM client can call to navigate, inspect a page, and interact with elements referenced in a snapshot.

The installation page lists Node.js 20 or newer and an MCP client as prerequisites. Because this is a next documentation page, verify current setup instructions and client compatibility before configuring a project.

Treat MCP capabilities as a security decision, not merely a convenience setting. The documentation warns that a tool for arbitrary JavaScript execution in the Playwright server process is equivalent to remote code execution and should be enabled only for trusted MCP clients. Review which client is connecting and which capabilities are enabled before use.

Record a browser flow with Codegen

Codegen is useful when a person can carry out the flow and wants a quick test-code draft. It records browser actions, then generates code. Playwright says it prioritizes role, text, and test-id locators, and improves a locator when multiple elements match.

Codegen also supports browser setup choices such as viewport or device emulation, language, timezone, and geolocation, as well as saving and loading authenticated state. That state contains session data, so protect it as a credential: keep it out of public repositories and share it only with people and systems that should have access.

Use the recorded test as a starting point. Check that the chosen locators are stable, add assertions for the behavior that matters, and remove incidental actions that do not belong in the test. The Codegen documentation covers recording, locator generation, emulation, and authentication-state options.

Make generated tests maintainable

AI assistance can speed up drafting and exploration, but a maintainable test suite still depends on clear setup, meaningful assertions, and deliberate review. Use a seed test to make project conventions visible to the agents, and write plans in terms of observable behavior rather than implementation guesses.

  • Review behavior, not just syntax. A test that runs can still miss the user outcome it is meant to protect.
  • Keep failures informative. When a healer changes a locator, wait, or assertion, confirm the change addresses the actual cause rather than masking a regression.
  • Separate exploration from acceptance criteria. A browser agent can discover possible paths; your team decides which paths represent required behavior.
  • Refresh generated definitions after Playwright upgrades. The definitions do not update themselves when the package changes.
