Wait for the map application’s own signal that the desired view is ready, then call Playwright’s page.screenshot(). There is no universal Playwright event that means every map tile has finished loading. A short network-quiet period is not proof that the visible map is complete.
Why map screenshots need an explicit readiness condition
Map tiles may load lazily as the map enters the viewport or its position changes. First navigate to the page and establish the exact map view you intend to capture. Then wait for a condition that indicates that particular view is ready: ideally a signal exposed by the map library or application, or a page-specific observable condition you have verified is reliable.

Playwright’s Page API provides page.waitForFunction(), which resolves when the supplied page function returns a truthy value, and page.screenshot() for capture. The predicate is application-specific; the API does not define a universal map-tile completion event.

Wait for the map’s settled state, then capture
- Open the page and set the desired view. Navigate, then perform any pan, zoom, or other interaction needed to show the map area you want.
- Identify a meaningful readiness signal. Check the application or map library documentation for a loaded or settled-view signal. If none is exposed, choose an observable page condition that reliably represents the rendered state required by your test. Do not guess an event name.
- Wait for that condition. Use
page.waitForFunction()for a page predicate, or an appropriate Playwright web assertion when the condition is naturally expressed as an assertion. - Capture only after the condition passes. Save the screenshot and, in tests, assert a meaningful page or visual state rather than treating a quiet network as proof of completeness.
Example with an application-specific predicate
The following JavaScript is runnable once you replace the example URL and predicate with your application’s real readiness condition. The placeholder function deliberately returns false; it is not a map-library API.

const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com/map');
// Set the map to the view you intend to capture here, if needed.
// Replace this predicate with a condition your application exposes
// and that you have verified means the desired view is rendered.
await page.waitForFunction(() => {
return window.__YOUR_APP_MAP_READY__ === true;
}, { timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'map.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
For example, your application might expose a state flag or update a visible element when its map view is ready. Use the actual contract for the page under test; do not copy window.__YOUR_APP_MAP_READY__ unless your page defines it.
Why networkidle is not a tile-completion guarantee
Playwright defines networkidle as at least 500 ms with no network connections and explicitly discourages using it for tests, recommending web assertions to assess readiness. That describes network activity, not whether every tile needed for the chosen map view has appeared. A request may still be pending, or the network may go quiet before the map has reached the visual state your test needs.

Use network quiet only if it is useful as an additional navigation condition for your page—not as the map’s completion signal. Prefer a map/application readiness condition tied to the actual view being captured.

After waiting, make the test check a meaningful outcome: for example, an application-provided ready state or a screenshot assertion against the expected visual result. Playwright’s official touch-events documentation demonstrates opening Google Maps, panning it, and using a screenshot assertion. That example shows map interaction and visual checking; it does not establish a universal tile-loaded event.

Troubleshoot incomplete or unreliable captures
- The screenshot has blank or missing tiles: Ensure the target map view is set before waiting, then verify that the readiness predicate corresponds to that view and to rendered content—not merely a request being issued.
- The wait times out: Check that the page really exposes the condition used by the predicate, and that the map reaches the required state in the test environment. Replace any guessed event or property with the application’s documented signal.
- The wait passes but the screenshot is still wrong: The predicate may indicate initialization rather than completion of the desired view. Tighten it to represent the rendered state the test requires, and add a meaningful visual or page assertion.
networkidleis intermittent: Do not rely on a quiet-network interval as a substitute for map readiness. Use an application-specific signal or verified page condition.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a URL rather than a Playwright test of your own map state, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server. A single request can capture a page as PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, using cURL:
