You schedule the YouTube live event in YouTube Studio (or through Google’s Live Streaming API), then arrange for FFmpeg on your Contabo VPS to start sending the video feed at the right time. A local FFmpeg playlist is only a list of media files: it does not create or schedule a YouTube event, and scheduling a YouTube video playlist does not start FFmpeg.
Understand what is being scheduled
There are three different objects in this workflow:

The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- YouTube live broadcast: the scheduled event viewers open. Google’s API describes a
liveBroadcastas the event. - YouTube live stream: the incoming audio/video feed sent by your encoder. In the API, a
liveStreamrepresents that feed. - Local FFmpeg playlist: a list of files on the VPS that FFmpeg plays and sends as one feed. It is not a YouTube playlist or a scheduled event.
The broadcast must be associated with the stream receiving FFmpeg’s feed. You can create and manage broadcasts and streams in YouTube Studio or with the YouTube Live Streaming API reference. Google explains the relationship and scheduling workflow in its API overview and broadcasts and streams guide.
What you need before configuring the VPS
- A Contabo VPS running Linux, access to its shell, and FFmpeg installed. Commands below are templates, not a verified Contabo deployment; adapt paths and options to your system and FFmpeg build.
- Video and, if needed, audio files stored on the VPS. Confirm that the files are readable and in formats your FFmpeg build can handle.
- A YouTube live event and its associated stream, plus the stream key and RTMP ingest address shown by YouTube for that stream.
- Permission to broadcast every video and audio track in your playlist. Technical ability to relay a file does not establish copyright permission or compliance with YouTube’s current rules.
Do not commit a real stream key to a public repository or paste it into shared logs. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. The implementation example used below also warns against exposing the key: FFmpeg VPS implementation example.

Create and schedule the YouTube live event
Set up the event in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and choose the scheduling option. Enter the title, description, visibility, and start time, then save the event.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the stream key and the ingest URL YouTube provides. Keep the key private. Do not assume an old key or URL applies to a different stream.
- Confirm that the scheduled broadcast is associated with the stream whose key you will use in FFmpeg. The broadcast is the viewer-facing event; the stream is the feed your VPS sends.
- Note the event’s time zone and start time. Your VPS process needs a separate schedule to begin sending the feed near that time.
Automate event creation with the API instead
For a workflow that creates or manages events programmatically, Google’s Live Streaming API supports broadcast and stream resources, scheduling, and binding a broadcast to a stream. A broadcast is a distinct YouTube video and is bound to one stream. Google says a stream can be reused for up to three broadcasts, which can suit a recurring workflow that keeps an encoder configuration and reuses its stream. This is an API capability, not a limit on how many events you can create overall. See the API reference and broadcasts and streams guide.
Prepare a local file list for FFmpeg
The example below loops local media files and pushes a feed to YouTube using RTMP-style ingest. It does not create a YouTube playlist. Use absolute paths, make sure the files exist, and adapt the file list and FFmpeg options to the media you actually have. The public VPS implementation example documents this general pattern, but does not establish that every configuration is stable or appropriate for every workload.
Make a video list
Create a text file such as /srv/stream/video-list.txt. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer format is one option for listing files:
file '/srv/stream/video-01.mp4'
file '/srv/stream/video-02.mp4'
file '/srv/stream/video-03.mp4'
Use paths the VPS can read. The concat demuxer works best when files have compatible stream layouts and parameters. If files differ significantly in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, or audio tracks, verify the result before relying on unattended playback; you may need to prepare compatible media or use a different input strategy.
Choose how audio is supplied
If each video already has the audio you want, a single video-list input may be enough. If you have a separate audio playlist, it must be kept synchronized with the video. An implementation pattern in the public VPS example loops local video and audio lists and muxes them into one feed. Do not assume that two independent lists will remain musically or editorially synchronized in every setup; inspect the actual output.
Run FFmpeg manually before scheduling it
First test a single FFmpeg process from the shell. The following is a template for a local video list and RTMP output; replace the placeholders with the ingest URL and key from the matching YouTube stream. This example re-encodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC, so resource use depends on the input and chosen encoding settings. It is not a guaranteed bitrate or VPS-sizing recipe.

ffmpeg -re
-stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/stream/video-list.txt
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
Every option is an example to adapt and verify, not a universal YouTube setting. The output bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, pixel format, and codecs must be suitable for the stream settings and ingest requirements currently shown in YouTube Studio. The example uses a two-second GOP only if the source/output frame rate is 30 fps; choose the keyframe interval to match your actual output frame rate and YouTube’s current guidance. Do not use this command unchanged if it does not match your media, FFmpeg build, or event settings.
The -re option reads input at its native rate rather than sending files as fast as possible. -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of the input; verify behavior with your FFmpeg version and playlist. The -f flv output is for this RTMP-style pattern. Google’s HLS ingest path is different: it has protocol-specific HTTPS, media-playlist, segment, and muxing requirements. Do not combine HLS segment rules with this simple RTMP output command. See Google’s HLS ingestion guide.
Watch the FFmpeg output and check the event’s actual live preview or player. A process that remains active is not proof that viewers are receiving valid video and audio: the cited VPS example describes a freeze despite an apparently active process. Stop the test cleanly once you have verified the feed.
Keep FFmpeg running with systemd
An interactive shell ends when you disconnect unless you deliberately keep the process alive. A systemd service can supervise FFmpeg and restart it if the process exits. The following is a template: use the actual FFmpeg path, file list, key, and options from your tested command. Store the key in a protected environment file or another secret-management method rather than publishing it in a unit file.
Create a protected environment file
For example, create /etc/streamneo-youtube.env readable only by the service administrator, with the ingest URL and key represented as variables. Do not put a real key in a tutorial, public repository, or unprotected shell history.
INGEST_URL=rtmp://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY
Protect the file with restrictive permissions appropriate to your service account. The variable name is only illustrative; use a valid systemd environment-file format and confirm that the service can read it.

Define the service
Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-playlist.service, adapting the command to your tested settings:
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube playlist stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
EnvironmentFile=/etc/streamneo-youtube.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i /srv/stream/video-list.txt -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k -pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -f flv ${INGEST_URL}
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Systemd does not expand shell variables in ExecStart the same way a shell does in every context. If your installed systemd or chosen configuration does not expand the variable as intended, use a carefully secured wrapper script or another supported secret-injection method. Avoid solving this by exposing the key in a world-readable file.

Load and inspect the service
- Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or changing the unit. - Start it with
sudo systemctl start youtube-playlist.service. - Check its state using
sudo systemctl status youtube-playlist.service. - Read recent logs with
sudo journalctl -u youtube-playlist.service -n 100 --no-pager. - Enable startup on boot only if that is the intended behavior:
sudo systemctl enable youtube-playlist.service.
Restart=on-failure can recover when FFmpeg exits with a failure status. It cannot restore a failed VPS, repair unreadable or corrupt media, ensure that outbound networking works, or fix a YouTube-side interruption. Confirm the feed at the YouTube event, not just through systemd’s process state.
Schedule the VPS process for the event time
YouTube’s event schedule and the VPS’s playback schedule are separate. Scheduling the event does not launch FFmpeg; a cron job, systemd timer, or other scheduler does not create the YouTube event. The public VPS implementation example uses systemd supervision with watchdog or cron checks, but it is an example rather than an official Google recipe.
For a one-off start, you can use a cron entry or a systemd timer to start the service at the desired time. Choose one scheduling mechanism and account for the VPS time zone, daylight-saving changes where relevant, and the lead time needed for YouTube’s preview or event status. A timer can start the service, while the service itself handles process supervision. Verify the resulting live output and logs; do not treat a successful timer trigger as proof that the broadcast is live.
Check Contabo networking and resource needs
Firewall layers
Contabo’s panel firewall and the VPS operating system’s firewall are separate. Contabo says its panel firewall, when assigned, blocks incoming traffic by default and leaves outgoing traffic unrestricted. An operating-system policy can still deny outbound connections, including the traffic needed to reach YouTube and resolve DNS. If you use a deny-by-default OS policy, permit the required outbound connectivity and DNS in that policy. See Contabo’s firewall guide and Linux outbound traffic guidance.

Choose resources based on the workload
No specific Contabo plan is established as universally sufficient. Resource demand depends on the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, number of simultaneous processes, and whether FFmpeg is simply copying compatible streams or transcoding them. Contabo’s API documentation covers VPS and VDS resource management and cloud-init on standard images, but does not provide workload-specific encoding benchmarks; Storage VPS is excluded from that API/CLI management scope. See the Contabo API documentation. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated for the newest revision, so consult the local documentation for the version installed on your VPS if options differ: FFmpeg documentation.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube shows no incoming feed
- Check event-to-stream binding: make sure the scheduled broadcast is associated with the stream whose key FFmpeg is using.
- Check the destination: confirm the ingest URL and key are copied from that stream and have not been mistyped or exposed and replaced.
- Check outbound access: inspect OS firewall rules, DNS resolution, and network access. A permissive Contabo panel firewall does not override an OS-level outbound-deny policy.
- Check FFmpeg logs: look for connection errors, unsupported codecs, missing files, or failed muxing, then verify the live preview itself.
The service starts and then exits
- Run the command manually to expose argument, path, permissions, or FFmpeg build errors.
- Check
journalctlfor the service’s latest error, confirm the environment file is readable, and ensure the service account can read all media files. - Use
systemctl statusto see whether the process is repeatedly restarting; a restart loop is a symptom to diagnose, not a healthy stream.
FFmpeg is active but the picture or sound freezes
- Inspect the YouTube preview and FFmpeg logs rather than relying on a running-process indicator.
- Check that the input files decode throughout, the playlist advances as expected, and any separate audio input stays synchronized.
- Review CPU and memory pressure if transcoding. A server can be under-resourced for a particular encode even when a process has not exited.
The VPS becomes inaccessible or needs a reboot
If the operating system is still accessible, Contabo’s guidance is to reboot from inside the OS. A sudden panel-level shutdown or restart should be a last resort because it can cause problems. See Contabo’s reboot support guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a VPS, FFmpeg process, scheduler, and recovery checks is more work than you want, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube, not from a live camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.

Can I use a YouTube video playlist as the input to FFmpeg?
This guide’s FFmpeg input is a local list of media files stored on the VPS, not a YouTube playlist.
Can I reuse the same YouTube stream for recurring broadcasts?
Google says one live stream resource can be bound to up to three broadcasts; configure each broadcast’s association in Studio or through the API.
Does systemd keep a stream online through a VPS or YouTube outage?
No. It can restart a failed FFmpeg process, but cannot guarantee availability through server, network, media, or YouTube-side failures.
