If SVG icons disappear from a Playwright screenshot, first identify how the icon is rendered, then use the browser’s console and network log to find failed assets or fonts. Add a wait only when the required resource loads successfully but the page is not yet ready to capture; waiting cannot fix a broken URL, blocked request, or invalid font.
Identify how the icon is rendered
“SVG icon” describes the appearance, not necessarily the implementation. Inspect the element in the DOM and its computed styles before changing your Playwright test. SVG is supported in HTML image and SVG elements and in CSS image contexts, but each route has different dependencies and failure modes. MDN’s SVG image guide explains the distinctions.

- Inline SVG: The markup contains an
<svg>element. Check whether it has paths or other visible content, dimensions, and styles that make it visible. - SVG image: An
<img>points to an SVG file. Check itssrc, the request and response, and whether the SVG depends on resources outside the file. - CSS image or mask: A stylesheet sets a
background-imageor mask using a URL. Check the computed style and the URL resolved from the stylesheet’s location. - Icon-font glyph: The visible symbol is a character rendered using a web font. Inspect the element’s font family and whether the intended font loaded.
This distinction matters: a font-loading wait is relevant to a font glyph, for example, but it does not repair a missing SVG file.

Look for evidence before adding sleeps. In Playwright UI Mode, review the browser console and network log for the icon, stylesheet, and font requests. A missing request, 404, unexpected response, blocked cross-origin request, or font decode/load error points to an asset or font problem rather than capture timing.

For each relevant request, verify the final URL after redirects, response status, content type, and origin. Confirm that the browser is requesting the expected path from the expected host. A server may return an HTML error page with a successful-looking status; check that the response actually contains the expected image or font.
Fix URL resolution and origin problems
Relative URLs in CSS resolve in the context of the stylesheet, not necessarily the page URL. A path that works in one route or local setup may resolve somewhere else in CI. Check the computed CSS URL and the request recorded by the browser. See MDN’s CSS url() reference.

- Correct the asset path or base URL so it resolves from the stylesheet’s actual location.
- Check cross-origin behavior when the asset is served from a different origin; restrictions can depend on the CSS property and resource type.
- If the page is being opened directly with
file://, try the application’s normal HTTP development server. Local-file origins can impose restrictions that do not reflect the deployed app.
Check SVGs that are loaded as images
An SVG viewed directly in a browser can look complete yet appear differently when embedded through <img> or a CSS background. SVGs used as images have security restrictions: scripts and external images or stylesheets inside the SVG may not load in that context. MDN documents these image-context restrictions.

Wait for a font glyph only after confirming the font can load
When the icon is a glyph from a web font, document.fonts.ready provides a useful synchronization point: it resolves when the document’s font set has resolved and layout is complete. It does not fix a failed font request. If the glyph is still missing afterward, check the font URL, response, cross-origin behavior, and font validity. See the MDN CSS Font Loading API reference.
Also inspect any font preload. MDN notes that font preloads require a crossorigin attribute; make sure the preload’s CORS mode matches the eventual font request. See MDN’s preload reference.

For a targeted diagnostic in a Playwright test, wait for the font set after navigating, then check the result. This wait synchronizes capture; it is not a substitute for fixing a failed request:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:3000', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
// Assert that the expected page state or icon is present before capturing.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png' });
Use the application’s real URL and the same icon-specific readiness assertion as the test. If the icon is an SVG asset rather than a font glyph, investigate its request instead of relying on document.fonts.ready.

Wait for the page’s actual ready state
A fixed delay may hide a race on one machine and fail on another. networkidle is not proof that an icon rendered: Playwright’s Frame API labels it discouraged for tests and advises relying on web assertions to assess readiness instead.
Prefer an assertion about the expected UI state, such as the icon element becoming visible or the page reaching the state in which the icon is used. If the icon is rendered as a background or mask, assert the relevant element and inspect its computed style or request as appropriate; visibility alone does not establish that the asset loaded.
For visual regression tests, Playwright’s PageAssertions API says toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing with the baseline. That helps stabilize capture, but pair it with an assertion that the expected UI state exists so a stable screenshot of a missing icon does not pass unnoticed.

A screenshot can differ even when the application and assets are unchanged. Fonts, browser versions, operating systems, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. Keep these consistent with the environment that generated the baseline. Playwright lists these sources of variation in its visual comparisons guide. The documentation URLs under /next can change as Playwright releases evolve.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot outside a Playwright test, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Its cleanup can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients.
Example cURL request (replace the URL with the page to capture):

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; AI agents can use the MCP server; and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Icon request is absent | The element or stylesheet may not be present in the captured state, or the CSS rule may not apply. | Inspect the DOM and computed styles; assert the UI state that should render the icon. |
| 404 or unexpected response | Wrong relative path, base URL, redirect destination, or server response. | Check the final request URL, status, content type, and response body; correct the asset path or serving configuration. |
| Asset is blocked across origins | Cross-origin restrictions or request configuration. | Check the browser console and network log, then align the origin and resource configuration with the intended embedding method. |
| SVG works when opened directly but not as an image | The SVG may depend on scripts or external resources unavailable in image context. | Make the SVG self-contained or use inline SVG if the page needs to style or script it. |
| Font glyph is missing after a wait | The font request may have failed, been blocked, returned invalid data, or used an incompatible preload mode. | Inspect the font request and decode errors; verify the URL, response, CORS behavior, and preload’s crossorigin. |
| Icon appears locally but not in visual CI | The browser, OS, installed fonts, settings, or headless configuration may differ from the baseline environment. | Align the rendering environment with the one used for the baseline, then rerun the test. |
