Capture a workflow state with Selenium
The basic sequence is: start a WebDriver, navigate to the app, perform the steps needed to reach a state, save the screenshot, and close the driver. The WebDriver documentation demonstrates saving a screenshot to a PNG file with driver.save_screenshot. The screenshot reflects the browser state when that command runs, so wait until the intended result is visible before capturing it.

Current browser view
save_screenshot is the straightforward option for a workflow checkpoint where surrounding page context matters. Selenium’s WebDriver documentation describes screenshot data as Base64-encoded; language bindings can save it as a PNG or expose image data as bytes or Base64.

Full document
A standard current-view capture and a full-document capture are different. The reviewed Selenium 4.50.0 Python Firefox API documents save_full_page_screenshot(filename) for full-document capture. Its availability in that reference is specific to the Firefox Python API; it does not establish identical support for every browser driver. Consult the Firefox WebDriver API reference for that method. If your chosen setup has no applicable documented method, capture intentional scroll positions and label them accordingly.
Plan a useful evidence sequence
Capture transitions that help someone understand the workflow, rather than taking a picture after every line of test code. A practical sequence might include the starting state, the visible result of a significant action, a validation or error state when relevant, and the completion state.

- Reach the initial state using a test account and known test data.
- Perform one meaningful action, such as submitting a form or applying a search.
- Wait for the expected visible state, then save a screenshot with a numbered, descriptive filename.
- Continue through the next significant transition and repeat.
- Inspect the saved files and confirm each image corresponds to the intended checkpoint.
For example, filenames such as 01-login.png, 02-search-results.png, and 03-confirmation.png make the sequence sort in workflow order. Captions can identify the user action and visible outcome. These are documentation recommendations, not Selenium requirements. Describe only what the screenshot visibly shows; an image alone cannot establish hidden application state or prove a backend operation succeeded.
Keep the conditions interpretable
When screenshots are meant to be compared, use a consistent browser viewport and note the browser, viewport, and relevant test fixture alongside the images. Selenium’s WebDriver API provides window sizing methods, including width and height settings. Wait for the expected state to appear, and avoid dialogs or overlays that obscure the result unless they are the evidence you intend to capture.

If screenshots will be shared or published, use a test account and remove or mask personal or confidential content before publication. This is a handling precaution, not a built-in Selenium privacy control.
Save screenshots as files, bytes, or Base64
Saving directly to a file is usually simplest for a workflow record. The Python API also exposes screenshot image data as PNG bytes or Base64, which can be useful when another part of your reporting pipeline handles the image. The documentation describes Base64 as useful for embedding an image in HTML.

Troubleshoot missing or misleading captures
- The screenshot shows the previous state: capture ran before the expected result became visible. Wait for that state before calling the screenshot method.
- Lower-page content is missing:
save_screenshotcaptures the current browser view, not necessarily the full document. Use a full-document method documented for your driver, or capture clearly labeled scroll positions. - No file appears: check that the destination directory exists, the path is valid, and the process can write there. Check the Boolean return value from the file-saving method and verify the artifact before using it.
- The captured element is not the intended one: confirm that the locator identifies the correct element in the current page state before calling its screenshot method.
- The image is hard to interpret beside other checkpoints: keep viewport dimensions consistent where visual comparison matters, and use ordered filenames and explanatory captions.
- The image exposes sensitive data: capture with a test account and sanitize the displayed content before sharing or publishing.
