Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Linux and Windows can render the same Playwright page differently, so identical test code does not guarantee identical screenshot pixels. If a test needs one approved appearance, generate and compare its baseline in the same pinned environment. If you need to validate both operating systems, use separate projects and baselines, then investigate each diff before changing tolerance settings.
Why Playwright screenshots differ between Linux and Windows
A screenshot reflects the browser running in its particular environment, not a platform-neutral rendering promise. Playwright lists the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headed or headless mode among factors that can affect visual output. Its guidance is to run comparisons in the environment used to generate the baseline: Playwright visual comparisons.

Fonts and platform-specific rendering can change text edges, line wrapping, and element dimensions. They are useful suspects when text looks different, but inspect the actual capture rather than assuming fonts explain every mismatch. Browser build, viewport, device scale settings, and OS-level rendering can also matter. The documentation does not quantify or rank these causes.

Choose one baseline policy
| Testing goal | Baseline policy | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Assert one approved appearance | Generate and compare snapshots on one canonical OS and browser environment. | Fewer baseline files, but this does not validate the other operating system. |
| Validate both Linux and Windows | Use distinct Playwright projects and platform-specific baselines. | More snapshots to review, but each platform can be checked against its own expected rendering. |
| Allow known, minor rendering noise | After investigation, set a narrowly scoped maxDiffPixels allowance. |
Less noise, but an overly high threshold can hide a real regression. |
Playwright supports platform- and project-specific snapshot naming and screenshot expectation settings; it does not require every team to choose the same policy. See the snapshot documentation.

Fix cross-platform screenshot failures step by step
- Decide what the test is meant to prove. For one canonical rendering, run baseline generation and comparisons in the same controlled environment. For explicit coverage of both operating systems, plan for separate Linux and Windows projects and baselines.
- Pin the execution stack. Keep the Playwright package, browser build, OS image, and relevant settings consistent within each comparison job. On Linux CI, use the official Playwright Docker image or install browser dependencies through the Playwright CLI. Pin the image tag and align its Playwright version with the project; the Docker guidance warns that a project/image version mismatch can prevent Playwright from locating browser executables.
- Use distinct projects when both systems matter. Configure clearly named Linux and Windows projects, each with its own expected screenshots. Playwright snapshot names include browser and platform, and include the project name when multiple projects are configured. This avoids treating expected platform differences as one shared golden image.
- Stabilize genuinely dynamic content.
toHaveScreenshot()takes repeated screenshots until two consecutive captures match. ItsstylePathoption can apply a stylesheet to hide volatile elements such as rotating content or timestamps, when those details are not what the test is intended to protect. Do not mask relevant UI just to make a test pass. See screenshot assertion options. - Inspect the actual, expected, and diff images. Identify whether the discrepancy is a layout shift, text or font variation, dynamic content, or small antialiasing noise. Recreate it in the same browser and environment; inspect the page and console where useful. Review snapshot changes rather than blindly accepting them.
- Adjust tolerance only after diagnosis. Playwright supports
maxDiffPixelsglobally or per project, but its documentation does not prescribe a universal Linux-versus-Windows threshold. Set the narrowest allowance that fits a known benign variation. - Update baselines deliberately. If the intended UI changed, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshots, inspect the generated files, and commit the reviewed result. Do not bulk-update every baseline just to silence a platform mismatch.
Keep Linux CI reproducible
- Confirm that the installed Playwright package and browser binaries match the intended release.
- Use the official Linux Docker image or, where appropriate to the CI environment, install dependencies with
npx playwright install --with-deps. See Playwright CI guidance. - Keep the selected image version stable to limit drift in OS packages and browser runtime. Docker tags and browser versions change, so check the current Docker documentation when updating the image.
- Compare captures made with the same viewport and browser project settings. Check whether the failing run is headed or headless.
- Use the trace or image diff to locate the changed element; do not assume every cross-platform mismatch is a font issue.
Common symptoms and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| Linux CI fails while a Windows local run passes | Whether baseline and comparison use the same OS, browser build, settings, and headed/headless mode. | Use a canonical environment or maintain separate platform baselines. |
| Text wraps differently or looks rough at the edges | Available fonts, platform rendering, viewport, and device scale settings. | Reproduce in the failing environment and inspect the diff before attributing it to fonts. |
| Mismatch moves between runs | Rotating content, timestamps, or other changing page regions. | Stabilize the page or selectively hide irrelevant volatile content with stylePath. |
| Playwright cannot locate browser executables in Docker | Whether the image’s Playwright version matches the project package. | Align the versions and use a pinned, documented image. |
| Many tiny pixel differences remain | Whether the diff is understood benign rendering noise or an actual visual change. | Only then consider a narrowly scoped maxDiffPixels allowance. |
Or skip the browser setup
For a screenshot without setting up a local browser, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its capture flow can accept cookie-consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to AI agents and other MCP clients.
