If your small team already uses Playwright and can keep screenshot runs consistent in CI, start with Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions. Choose Percy when you need a hosted visual-review workflow and a shared place to approve changes. Percy does not replace the need to configure a CI gate if unapproved visual changes must block merges.
What Playwright and Percy each do
Playwright’s built-in screenshot assertions
Playwright Test provides expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On an initial run it creates a reference image; later runs compare the captured page against that baseline. Reference images live in snapshot directories alongside the test suite, so teams can commit and review baseline updates with ordinary repository changes. The assertion also supports pixel-difference thresholds and a stylesheet option for hiding or neutralizing dynamic content. See the Playwright visual comparisons documentation.

This is a local-baseline workflow: your team owns where images live, how changes are reviewed, and when updated references are accepted. It requires no Percy account or project token.
Percy with Playwright
Percy adds a hosted visual review workflow that integrates with Playwright. BrowserStack documents a drop-in approach for existing toHaveScreenshot() tests: install @percy/cli and @percy/playwright, register the Percy integration in Playwright’s configuration, then run the tests through percy exec with a Percy project token. Percy creates a build for review in its interface. The integration can retain existing screenshot assertions while moving the visual verdict into Percy’s hosted workflow. Follow the Percy Playwright integration guide.

Playwright vs Percy at a glance
| Decision | Playwright screenshot assertions | Percy with Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Where baselines live | In snapshot directories in the test project; baseline changes are reviewed and updated with repository changes. | Percy can maintain a hosted base build. Existing committed screenshots can seed a new Percy project when its configuration requirements are met. |
| Where review happens | Developers inspect local test artifacts and repository diffs. | Reviewers inspect visual changes in Percy’s hosted interface. |
| What happens on a difference | A changed image or missing baseline fails the screenshot assertion. | Changes appear for review in Percy. Teams that need unapproved changes to block CI must add Percy’s documented wait/fail-on-changes step. |
| Setup and ownership | No Percy account or token; the team owns snapshots and its review process. | Adds Percy CLI and SDK, a project token, hosted project configuration, and review of Percy builds. |
| Usage planning | No Percy screenshot allocation applies. | Each browser and responsive-width rendering contributes to screenshot usage, so broader coverage consumes more. |
This is a documentation-based workflow comparison, not an independent performance test. BrowserStack’s Percy billing documentation, accessed in 2026, describes an allocation of 5,000 free monthly screenshots. It counts each page or component rendering for an individual browser and responsive width as a screenshot; check the current Percy billing documentation before planning against that volatile plan figure.
How to choose for a small team
Start with native Playwright when local review is enough
Built-in assertions are a sensible first choice when you have a stable CI image, a manageable set of important screens, and developers who can review image diffs. Keep the browser, operating system, viewport, fonts, and test data consistent wherever practical. Filter genuinely dynamic content and update committed baselines deliberately.

Rendering consistency is a real constraint, not a Playwright defect. Playwright’s documentation cautions: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery or power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” A baseline generated on one environment may differ from a capture on another even when application code has not changed.

Percy is worth evaluating if you want centrally maintained base builds, a shared review surface, or visual approvals by teammates who do not routinely inspect local test artifacts. Pilot it with representative pages and the browser/viewport combinations you expect to run, then estimate monthly usage from that coverage.
Rank #3
Do not assume that a passing screenshot assertion by itself means Percy has approved a visual change or that CI will block on it. If unapproved visual changes must stop merges, configure the documented Percy wait/fail-on-changes step as part of CI.
Do not treat Percy as a prerequisite
Native Playwright already covers the core screenshot-comparison workflow. Percy adds hosted processing and review semantics; it is not required for visual regression testing. The practical decision is where your team wants baselines and approvals to live, how consistently it can render tests, and how much browser-and-viewport coverage it intends to run.

- Encourages independence and therefore boosts self esteem as children are no longer dependent on you reminding them what comes next.
- Allows for processing time - the pictures, or pecs cards for autism, don't disappear like words do and therefore these are great for children with special educational needs, autism, ADHD, speech and language delay, ASD.

ScreenshotNeo as an alternative to try first
For teams looking for a screenshot service rather than a visual-regression review platform, ScreenshotNeo is an alternative to try first: it removes consent banners, popups, and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Recommended Free Tools
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not a replacement for Playwright’s committed visual baselines or Percy’s hosted approval workflow. Its one-call capture can be useful when the immediate need is obtaining clean page screenshots; its MCP server also lets AI agents use screenshot tools.
For API and MCP setup details, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation. Free signup provides 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required: create a free ScreenshotNeo account.
