1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou can loop a compatible video into YouTube Live with FFmpeg and keep the encoder running under systemd. The basic workflow is to copy the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, send the file at playback speed, supervise FFmpeg as a foreground service, then check both the Linux process and the broadcast in Live Control Room. These are separate checks: a running process does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
What you need before you start
- A Linux host that can stay powered on and connected to the internet for the duration of the broadcast. It can be a server or a suitable computer you operate.
- A local prerecorded video readable by the service account that will run FFmpeg.
- FFmpeg installed on the host. Options and codec support depend on the installed build, so check the documentation matching your binary with FFmpeg’s documentation.
- A YouTube channel eligible to use live streaming, with a stream configured in YouTube Studio.
This setup gives you control over the Linux process and its files, but you are responsible for the host, network, media compatibility, key security, and operational monitoring.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or select a stream in Live Control Room.
- In the stream settings, copy the ingest URL and stream key. Use the protocol and endpoint YouTube provides for that stream; do not assume every stream uses the same URL.
- Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public script, unit file, repository, support request, or screenshot. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Decide whether the event is scheduled or intended to start immediately. For a scheduled stream, start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room before clicking Go live.
YouTube’s encoder workflow and archive guidance are in its Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder help page. Labels can change; follow the current controls shown in your Studio account.
Check the media and choose copy or transcode
Inspect the source before deployment
FFmpeg can loop a file, but the example below is not universal. Container, video and audio codecs, timestamps, frame rate, and audio presence all affect whether the source can be sent as-is. Check the file locally and make a short test broadcast before relying on it unattended.

Use stream copy only when compatible
-c:v copy avoids re-encoding the video, reducing CPU work, but it only works when the source’s encoded tracks and the output format are compatible with the chosen ingest. The example encodes audio to AAC; if the source has no audio, decide and test an appropriate audio path rather than assuming silence will be accepted.
Transcode when the source needs conversion
If copy fails or the source does not match YouTube’s current encoder requirements, replace stream copy with an explicit video encode and set codec, pixel format, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval according to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the stream’s Studio settings. A transcode uses more CPU than copying. The correct values depend on the source and selected ingest; do not copy a preset blindly.
Loop a file with FFmpeg over RTMP
For a compatible local file and an RTMP ingest endpoint, this command shows the shape of a looped stream. Replace the path and placeholder with your own values; never publish a real key.

-rereads the file at its natural playback rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.-stream_loop -1asks FFmpeg to repeat the input indefinitely. It belongs before that input’s-i.-c:v copycopies the video track rather than encoding it. Remove or change this if the source and output are incompatible.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100encodes audio as AAC with the stated bitrate and sample rate. These are example command values, not a guarantee that every source or stream should use them.-f flvselects the RTMP/FLV output shape used in this example. Do not use it unchanged for an HLS ingest.
Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the options supported by the version installed on your host. Confirm that the command runs without errors and that its output reaches YouTube before converting it into a boot service.
For a playlist of multiple videos
Build and validate the playlist or media input before deployment. Combining clips and looping the resulting input can work, but differing codecs, durations, audio layouts, and timestamps make a universal playlist recipe unreliable. Test transitions locally and check timestamp continuity; then run a private or otherwise safe test stream and inspect the result in Live Control Room.
Use the ingest protocol YouTube selected
RTMP and HLS are not interchangeable command-line labels. Use the URL and protocol displayed in Studio for the selected stream.

RTMP
The command above is an RTMP example. Its FLV output settings are not a template for other ingest protocols.
HLS
YouTube’s Set up an HLS stream guidance describes HLS ingest as higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments. The HLS URL starts with HTTPS. YouTube specifies TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT for ingest. Its HLS-specific codec guidance includes HEVC as well as H.264. An ordinary RTMP/FLV command should not be reused unchanged for HLS; configure an encoder that meets the current HLS requirements.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
Have systemd supervise FFmpeg in the foreground so it can track the encoder process. Keep credentials outside a publicly readable unit file. The following is a configuration pattern, not a universal drop-in: exact directives and service behavior can vary with the installed systemd version and host setup.

Store the stream destination securely
Create an environment file readable only by root and the service account, for example /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env. Put the destination URL containing the key there, rather than in a world-readable unit file. Restrict its permissions and ownership, and ensure the service account can read the video file but has only the access it needs.
sudo chown root:root /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
sudo chmod 600 /etc/ffmpeg-youtube.env
Use the environment file in the unit with systemd’s EnvironmentFile directive. Avoid printing the secret in logs or exposing it in process listings or diagnostic material; assess how your chosen command and host handle arguments and environment variables. If a key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio.
Create a foreground service
Create a unit such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-loop.service. Adapt the account, paths, environment variable, command options, and restart delay to your system. The key should be supplied through the protected environment file; the command below is illustrative.

Confirm your systemd version’s handling of environment-variable expansion in ExecStart and use a safe wrapper or another supported configuration method if needed. The example illustrates a restart policy and journal-based diagnostics; validate it on your host rather than assuming every directive or expansion works identically everywhere.
Enable and inspect the service
- After saving the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Start it for the initial test:
sudo systemctl start youtube-loop.service. - Inspect process state and recent diagnostics:
sudo systemctl status youtube-loop.serviceandsudo journalctl -u youtube-loop.service. - Once the test behaves as intended, enable it at boot:
sudo systemctl enable youtube-loop.service. - After a deliberate restart, inspect the unit and journal again, then independently confirm the incoming preview and live state in YouTube Studio.
systemd can restart FFmpeg after a process exit, but it cannot fix a bad key, missing media, unsupported codec, repeated authentication failure, full disk, network outage, or YouTube-side event state. A local active service is not proof of viewer-facing playback. If unattended availability matters, add an external check or alert that tests the actual broadcast as well as the host process.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Validate the broadcast, not just the process
- Start FFmpeg and check that the service remains active without recurring errors.
- Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and wait for the preview or incoming signal.
- For a scheduled event, click Go live only after the preview is available and the event is ready to begin.
- Check the stream’s live state and watch page using the intended visibility setting. A private or unlisted test can help catch configuration issues before a public broadcast.
- Keep checking Studio if the stream is important: systemd’s process status and YouTube’s ingest/broadcast health answer different questions.
Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A nominal 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, and the guidance does not guarantee that one uninterrupted event longer than the threshold will produce a complete replay. Decide how to handle event/session boundaries and keep a separate source recording if a complete archive matters. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream guidance for the archive qualification.

Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg exits immediately: inspect
journalctl -u youtube-loop.servicefor a missing path, permissions issue, unsupported option, or media/codec error. Test the command manually as the service account. - Service is active but Studio shows no incoming preview: confirm the selected ingest URL and key, protocol, and output format. Check the FFmpeg journal for connection or authentication errors. Process state alone does not verify ingest.
- Repeated restarts: identify the underlying failure before changing the restart policy. A delay can prevent rapid retry loops, but restarting cannot repair invalid credentials, inaccessible media, unsupported encoding, or unavailable network.
- Video plays but audio is absent or rejected: inspect whether the source has an audio track and whether the chosen audio encoding is compatible. Establish and test an audio plan before deployment.
- Loop or playlist transition glitches: inspect source timestamps, codecs, audio layouts, and transitions. Validate the combined media input locally rather than assuming different clips will loop seamlessly.
- HLS output fails with an RTMP command: configure a genuine HLS workflow using the HTTPS endpoint and HLS segment, playlist, and transport requirements specified by YouTube; FLV/RTMP settings are not interchangeable.
- The stream stops despite FFmpeg running: check YouTube Studio and any external monitoring, then inspect host connectivity and encoder output. A healthy local process does not establish a healthy public broadcast.
Choose between self-hosting and cloud operation
| Approach | What you operate | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Linux host with FFmpeg and systemd | Your host, files, network, process configuration, key security, and monitoring. | Provides direct control, but systemd restart behavior is only process recovery, not end-to-end broadcast verification. |
| VPS running the same workflow | The rented server plus the Linux, FFmpeg, media, and YouTube setup. | Moves the host out of your home, but still leaves you responsible for the encoder and broadcast checks. No provider or price is established here. |
| StreamNeo | Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. | Cloud looping avoids keeping a computer or home connection on; one flat price per slot covers uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, and the first day is free with no card. |
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo loops the upload in the cloud and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
