Playwright Screenshot Test Says Image Size Differs: How to Fix It

When Playwright says a screenshot image size differs, compare capture settings and environment before changing visual-diff tolerances or regenerating the baseline.

If a Playwright screenshot assertion reports that the image size differs, first make the expected and actual captures use the same viewport, device scale factor, screenshot scale, capture scope, and browser environment. Those settings determine pixel dimensions; visual-diff tolerances do not. Check the failure artifacts before changing settings or updating the baseline.

Why Playwright reports different screenshot dimensions

A screenshot assertion compares an actual image with a stored baseline. If their pixel widths or heights differ, the capture conditions are not equivalent—or the page content being captured has a different size. The title alone does not reveal which setting is responsible, so start with the reported dimensions and artifacts rather than guessing.

Playwright documents that rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Run the baseline and comparison in the same environment where practical. Playwright: Visual comparisons

Diagnose the mismatch in order

  1. Read the full failure. Record the expected and actual width × height, then inspect the expected and actual image artifacts. Confirm whether the mismatch is width, height, or both.
  2. Compare the browser and host environment. Use the same Playwright project, browser version, operating system, and headless configuration as the baseline run where practical. Environment differences can affect rendering and, depending on the page, its captured content.
  3. Check viewport and device emulation. Compare the context viewport and device scale factor. A device descriptor may set both. If overriding its viewport, put the explicit viewport after the spread device descriptor so your intended value takes precedence. A call to page.setViewportSize() also changes the viewport. Playwright: Emulation
  4. Match screenshot scale. For screenshot assertions, scale: 'css' produces one image pixel per CSS pixel; scale: 'device' uses device pixels and can produce larger images on high-DPI setups. Set the same scale for baseline and actual capture. Playwright: PageAssertions API
  5. Match the capture area. A viewport screenshot captures the visible area; fullPage: true captures the full scrollable page; a clip captures a specified rectangle. Make sure both captures use the intended, matching scope. Playwright: Page API
  6. Review page-dependent height. For a full-page capture, content that changes the scrollable page height can change the screenshot dimensions. Check whether the page content differs before treating the image as a browser-setting problem.
  7. Consider comparison tolerance only after dimensions match. maxDiffPixels, maxDiffPixelRatio, and threshold control visual comparison tolerance; they do not make images with different dimensions the same size. Playwright: SnapshotAssertions API

Make capture settings explicit

Set the project viewport and assertion options deliberately. This TypeScript example uses a 1280 × 720 CSS-pixel viewport and CSS-pixel screenshot scale; choose values that match your test rather than copying them blindly.

import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';

export default defineConfig({
  projects: [
    {
      name: 'chromium',
      use: {
        ...devices['Desktop Chrome'],
        viewport: { width: 1280, height: 720 },
      },
    },
  ],
  expect: {
    toHaveScreenshot: {
      scale: 'css',
      // Set fullPage consistently at the assertion if needed.
    },
  },
});

Then make the assertion’s capture scope explicit:

await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('page.png', { fullPage: false });

If the test is meant to capture the entire page, use fullPage: true consistently instead. If you use a device descriptor, keep any viewport override after the spread, as in the example. Playwright’s screenshot and emulation references describe these options: Page API, PageAssertions API, and Emulation.

When to update the snapshot

Once the capture conditions match, decide whether the changed screenshot reflects an intended UI change. Review the actual image; if the change is intentional, update the expected baseline with --update-snapshots. Do not use a baseline update to conceal an unexplained size mismatch. Playwright’s guidance covers baseline updates and environment consistency in its visual comparisons documentation.
