If an infinite list loads on scroll, scroll through it first and wait for a page-specific signal—such as a new item or an end marker—before taking the screenshot. If the scrollbar belongs to an inner container, scroll or capture that container instead.
Why a full-page screenshot can still miss content
Playwright’s fullPage: true expands the screenshot to the document’s scrollable extent. It does not guarantee that the application has loaded everything in that extent. Infinite lists, lazy images, and scroll-triggered reveals may appear only after actual scrolling. Virtualized lists may render only rows near the viewport, even when more items belong to the list.

A second common cause is a nested scroll area: the visible scrollbar may belong to a content wrapper rather than the document. A document-level full-page screenshot does not expand an arbitrary element with its own scrolling.
Identify what scrolls and what loads content
- Check the scroll owner. Scroll the page and inspect whether
window.scrollYchanges. If it does not, check the suspected wrapper’sscrollTop. Elements styled withoverflow: autooroverflow: scrollmay own the scrolling. - Check the loading trigger. Determine whether items load on a scroll event, when a sentinel enters view, after a network response, or when a “Load more” control is activated. Playwright’s feature-request issue documents scroll-gated loading and virtualized-list cases; it does not establish an API option that automatically loads every item.
- Choose a completion signal. Prefer a known item count, a visible end marker, or a loading indicator changing state. A short timeout without new items does not prove the list is complete.

Load a document-level infinite list before capture
The following JavaScript pattern scrolls the document repeatedly, waits for the item count to increase, and stops if a page-specific end marker appears. Replace the selectors with ones from the page under test. The attempt limit is a safety bound, not proof that the list is complete.

If the page loads batches only after a particular scroll distance, a “Load more” action, or a specific request, adapt the trigger and wait condition accordingly. A list may have no natural end; in that case, define a bounded range or expected item count for the capture.

Playwright’s page API documentation covers waitForFunction and page-side evaluation. Its documentation discourages fixed-time waits in production tests in favor of meaningful conditions.
Handle an inner scroll container
If a wrapper owns scrolling, move that element rather than the window. For example, with a locator named list, scroll it incrementally and wait for the same kind of application-level signal used above:

If the goal is one tall document image, first verify that the page itself is the scroll owner and that its content has loaded.
Choose the capture that matches the goal

Common failure modes and fixes
- Only adding
fullPage: true: this expands the document screenshot but does not perform the scroll interactions that load later content. Scroll first, then capture. - Waiting only for
networkidle: a quiet network does not establish that an infinite list reached its intended end. Wait for an item, end marker, or other application-level condition tied to the content you need. - Using an arbitrary sleep: elapsed time can be too short on a slow page or wasteful on a fast one. Use a selector or state change; Playwright documents
waitForTimeoutas discouraged for production tests. - Scrolling the wrong element: check whether
window.scrollYor a wrapper’sscrollTopchanges, then target the actual scroll owner. - Assuming every virtualized row is in the DOM: scroll through the needed range and capture viewports, or use the application’s data interface if the task is to enumerate records rather than create a visual artifact.
- Stopping after a timeout with no growth: this may indicate a slow request, a failed trigger, the wrong selector, or a genuine end. Confirm using the page’s loading state or explicit end marker.
- Different screenshot output across machines: compare with the same browser and execution environment before treating a visual difference as an application regression. Playwright lists browser, operating system, hardware, and other environment factors as possible sources of variation.
