Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play a list of videos in order, and -stream_loop -1 to repeat that list continuously. The playlist controls playback order—not the broadcast’s calendar date or start time. Create or schedule the YouTube event separately in YouTube Live Control Room, then send FFmpeg’s output to its stream URL and key.
What the playlist file controls—and what it does not
An FFmpeg concat playlist is a plain-text script that names the media files to read sequentially. The order of the file lines determines playback order. It does not set a date, time, or YouTube event details; schedule those in YouTube Live Control Room.

- Sequence: the concat playlist.
- Repeat: FFmpeg’s
-stream_loop -1option. - Broadcast scheduling: the scheduled event in YouTube Live Control Room.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requires matching streams across files: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Prepare a concat playlist
Create a text file named, for example, playlist.ffconcat. Put the header below on the very first line, exactly as shown, then list the files in the order they should play:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'video-01.mp4'
file 'video-02.mp4'
file 'video-03.mp4'
Save the playlist in the same directory as the videos to keep relative paths simple. The ffconcat version 1.0 header must be the first line without a byte-order mark for automatic format recognition. Quote paths appropriately when they contain spaces or special characters; consult the concat documentation for escaping details. The demuxer’s safe-path setting defaults to 1, which restricts paths. The example command below uses -safe 0 for flexibility; use it only with a playlist you trust, since it permits paths outside the restricted safe form.
Check the media before choosing an FFmpeg command
The simplest route is to use the concat demuxer with files whose streams are compatible. Check that the clips have matching codecs, stream layout and timing properties, and that their duration information is accurate. Differences can cause errors, gaps, or artifacts; concatenation does not promise seamless transitions.

- If all files are compatible and the resulting live ingest accepts their streams, stream-copy may avoid re-encoding. Test the exact files and FFmpeg build first.
- If files have different properties or need processing, normalize them in advance or use the concat filter and re-encode. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg FAQ.
- Encoder availability depends on how FFmpeg was built. Confirm that your installation includes the encoder you select, such as
libx264.
Schedule the YouTube broadcast and get its destination
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Use the current controls there to set the event details and schedule.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your broadcast.
- Use the current destination and encoder settings shown in Live Control Room. YouTube’s interface and guidance can change, so check its current live encoder settings and schedule a live stream instructions.
Start a repeating FFmpeg stream
This is a template, not a universal copy-and-paste command. Replace the placeholders with values appropriate to your media, FFmpeg build, and YouTube stream. Put -stream_loop -1 before the playlist input so FFmpeg repeats that input indefinitely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v <video-bitrate> -maxrate <video-bitrate>
-bufsize <buffer-size> -g <keyframe-interval>
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://<youtube-ingest>/<stream-key>'
FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so keep input options such as -stream_loop before -i. The stream URL, stream key, codecs, bitrate, dimensions, frame rate, audio settings, and keyframe interval must match the files and current YouTube requirements. The command re-encodes video to H.264 and audio to AAC; do not assume those encoder names are available in every build. YouTube’s current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. Select bitrate for the chosen resolution and frame rate while keeping reliable upload capacity in mind. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.

- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
If you choose stream-copy instead of encoding, replace the codec settings only after confirming all playlist entries have compatible streams and that the live ingest accepts them. Stream-copy can reduce processing, but it does not correct mismatched media or guarantee clean loop points.
Preview, go live, and end the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and watch its output for connection errors, encoder failures, or repeated input errors.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview. Confirm that it has both video and audio and that stream health is acceptable.
- For a scheduled event, use the Control Room’s go-live flow when the preview is ready; sending an encoder feed alone is not the same as setting the scheduled broadcast live.
- To end the broadcast, stop the encoder feed and use the end-stream control as directed by YouTube for the scheduled event. See YouTube’s live-stream scheduling guidance.
Test and troubleshoot before relying on the stream
YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance also recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom over the stream bitrate. These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted delivery. Test the full playlist and configuration before the scheduled event: YouTube encoder settings and YouTube live encoder troubleshooting.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the playlist or a listed file | Wrong working directory, misspelled path, quoting/escaping issue, or a path rejected by the safe-path restriction. | Check the playlist filename and each path. Keep files beside the playlist and use relative paths where practical. If using -safe 0, only use a playlist you trust. |
| Concat fails on a later clip or output has gaps/artifacts | Files have different streams, codecs, time bases, layouts, or inaccurate duration data. | Inspect and normalize the media before concatenation, or use the concat filter and re-encode. Test transitions and loop boundaries with the actual files. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder | The installed build does not include the selected encoder. | Check available encoders in that build and select an available option, or install a build with the required encoder. |
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | Incorrect stream URL or key, connection problem, or incompatible output settings. | Compare the destination with the current values in Live Control Room, confirm the key belongs to that event, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection output. |
| Preview has no audio or video, or stream health is poor | Source files lack the expected stream, encoding settings do not fit the media or ingest, or upload capacity is insufficient. | Check each file’s streams, verify output settings and preview, and test on a connection with YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. |
| The scheduled event has a feed but is not live | The encoder feed is running, but the scheduled broadcast’s go-live step has not been completed. | Use the go-live controls in Live Control Room after checking the preview. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
A technically valid playlist does not grant rights to stream the videos. Before broadcasting, confirm you have the necessary rights for every video, soundtrack, and other included material, and review YouTube’s current copyright guidance. Repeating prerecorded material also does not by itself establish compliance with YouTube’s monetization rules. If monetization matters, review the current YouTube channel monetization policies and assess whether the channel’s content meets them.
