If page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) cuts off a sticky footer, first check the footer’s computed position, its ancestors’ overflow and height rules, and whether it sits inside a nested scroller. Playwright’s full-page option captures the page’s full scrollable area; it does not repair layout or guarantee that every fixed or sticky element will appear where you expect. Use a screenshot-only CSS override as a diagnostic, then choose whether the final image should show a footer once at the document end or preserve its persistent on-screen behavior.
What fullPage: true does—and what it does not do
Playwright defines a full-page screenshot as a capture of the full scrollable page rather than only the visible viewport. Its guide describes the result as if the page were displayed on a very tall screen. See Playwright’s Screenshots guide and Page screenshot API.
That describes the capture area, not a CSS correction. The option does not change a sticky or fixed footer into normal document flow, remove clipping caused by an ancestor, or guarantee the result for every layout. The title alone is not enough to identify the cause: inspect the affected page in the browser and viewport used by the test.
Diagnose where the footer is being clipped
Compare viewport and full-page captures
Save both a regular screenshot and a full-page screenshot under the same browser, viewport, and page state. The regular capture shows what the user sees in the viewport; the full-page image helps reveal where the footer disappears relative to the document. If the footer is missing or clipped in both, look first at the page layout or loading state rather than assuming the full-page option is at fault.

Inspect the footer and its ancestor chain
Check the footer’s computed position and bounding box, then inspect its ancestors for constrained heights and overflow values that could clip it. Confirm whether the footer belongs to the document’s main scrolling page or to a nested scrolling region. Also check whether a containing block or stacking context affects the footer’s placement.
A small browser-side diagnostic can expose the key measurements. Replace .footer with the selector used by your page:

- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
const footerInfo = await page.locator('.footer').evaluate((footer) => {
const style = getComputedStyle(footer);
const rect = footer.getBoundingClientRect();
const ancestors = [];
for (let node = footer.parentElement; node; node = node.parentElement) {
const ancestorStyle = getComputedStyle(node);
ancestors.push({
tag: node.tagName,
id: node.id,
className: node.className,
height: ancestorStyle.height,
overflow: ancestorStyle.overflow,
overflowY: ancestorStyle.overflowY,
});
}
return {
position: style.position,
top: rect.top,
bottom: rect.bottom,
height: rect.height,
documentScrollHeight: document.documentElement.scrollHeight,
documentClientHeight: document.documentElement.clientHeight,
ancestors,
};
});
console.dir(footerInfo, { depth: null });
This is a diagnostic aid, not a Playwright-prescribed footer fix. Interpret the measurements alongside the actual screenshots and page structure. In particular, a nested scroller may have its own scroll height that is not represented by the document’s full-page capture.
Test a screenshot-only positioning override
Playwright supports applying CSS directly to a screenshot. Temporarily put the footer into normal flow to see whether sticky or fixed positioning contributes to the cutoff:
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page.png',
fullPage: true,
style: '.footer { position: static !important; }',
});
Replace .footer with the real selector. This override is an experiment, not a universal correction: if the footer becomes visible, its positioning or containing layout is implicated, but you still need to decide whether normal flow matches the intended output. Playwright documents the screenshot style option in its screenshot API. For screenshot assertions, its visual comparisons guide also documents stylePath for applying a stylesheet, including styles that filter volatile elements.

Choose the capture that matches the intended footer behavior
Footer should appear once at the end of a document
If the image is meant to represent a long document with its footer at the end, normal-flow positioning may suit the artifact better. If the application layout is otherwise correct for users, apply a verified screenshot-only override rather than changing production CSS solely to accommodate a test image.
Footer should stay visible while the user scrolls
If the footer is meant to remain fixed or sticky in the user interface, preserving that behavior may be more faithful than forcing it to the document end. Consider capturing the viewport, or using a test-specific presentation that represents the intended persistent UI. The right choice depends on whether the output is a document image or a picture of the interactive screen.

Clipping comes from an ancestor or nested scroller
If an ancestor’s height or overflow clips the footer, inspect and correct the layout or capture the relevant scrolling region deliberately. A footer inside a nested scroller is not necessarily part of the main document’s scrollable area, so changing its positioning alone may not solve the issue.

Keep visual screenshot tests reproducible
For regression tests, keep the browser and rendering environment stable. Playwright notes that screenshots can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. A difference between environments may therefore be unrelated to a footer CSS change. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Footer appears in the viewport image but not in the full-page image | Computed position, footer bounding box, ancestor overflow and height, and nested scrolling regions |
Try the screenshot-only normal-flow override; use the result to identify whether positioning or its containing layout is involved. |
| Footer is clipped in both screenshots | Whether the page has loaded into its expected state, and whether the footer or an ancestor clips its contents | Inspect the layout and capture timing in the same browser and viewport as the test. |
| Footer moves to an unexpected place after the override | Whether the selector matches the intended footer and whether normal flow matches the document structure | Verify the selector and treat the override as a diagnostic, not an automatic production fix. |
| Screenshot differs across test machines | Browser version, operating system, rendering settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode | Stabilize the environment before attributing the difference to page CSS. |
